It's been quite a week for EddieClaxton. Just seven days ago, he was a hopeless college dropout who intentionally flunked accountancy to spite his parents. He's followed every single instruction his parents ever gave him to the letter. No ifs, ands, or buts. Being a subservient little kid has been hammered into his cranium ever since he was a child and yet here he is now: the bane of his goodie two-shoes parents' existence.
It all started while he was preparing to move out from his parents' place into a tenement closer to the boring college he went to. While trying to dig through their storage room for any old instructional material related to whatever he needed to study for maths, he found a stack of old diaries and journals used by his great-great-great grandfather and his ancestors. They were in quite poor shape yet most of the penmanship remained barely legible. Well, legible enough for Eddie to read anyway. After reading a page or two from one of the aforementioned diaries, he decided to pack them into his suitcase for further reading. He did so discreetly since he knew his parents let these rot in their storage room for a reason.
As he got more and more fed up with how astonishingly dull college was, he read more and more about his ancestors' history. They seemed to be well-respected members of some sort of enterprise which enabled them to live like kings and enjoy the finer things in life. And they had fun being a part of it too. After the first semester, he managed to pick up on enough subtle hints to conclude that the so-called 'enterprises' his ancestors weren't exactly of the legal type. He was supposed to be repelled by such uncivilized concepts such as criminal activity yet he found himself daydreaming of possessing that much power, respect, and most of all, power. And he would have fun doing it. He wasn't a big fan of laws and regulations ever since he's realized how much control his parents had over him so who cared about what society and future victims felt? Funnily enough, this revelation came to him from a verse he read halfway into his great-great-great grandpa's diary.
After all that tension, all it really took was one failed test because of a misplaced calculator and the dominoes kept on falling. It would sound like an unfunny joke how such a small incident blew the lid off his frustrations and inhibitions but it did do the trick and the rest was history. And now, here EddieClaxton was: degree-less, well-dressed, filthy rich, and reminiscing on a bench in the streets of Downtown, LA.
"One of the Don's wise guys, huh? I don't feel any wiser. Maybe it's their fancier way of saying richer," EddieClaxton laughed to himself as he lit a cigar.
One puff of the exquisite smoke and he slipped back into deep thought. |

He had climbed the criminal ladder as quickly as his ancestors did, gotten all the money he's ever wanted, and finally achieved the freedom from societal expectations he's always dreamt of yet something felt amiss. It seems like he-
EddieClaxton's introspection was interrupted as a sharp pain suddenly struck his stomach. A small ouch escaped his lips as the cigar flew from his hand onto the cobblestone pavement below. His eyes turned to his left as two ocean-blue eyes locked into his in an empty stare.
Ocean-blue eyes, messy brown hair which still reeks of pomade, the tattered remains of an all-business suit and tie; it was clear this person who just slumped down on the bench and accidentally elbowed EddieClaxton wasn't the usual homeless bum. Sadly, Eddie wasn't in the most compassionate or sympathetic of moods. Looks like this down-on-his-luck gentleman remains down on his luck.
"Watch where you're going, bozo," EddieClaxton yelled at the man as Eddie shoved him further to the other side of the bench.
Eddie pulled out another cigar off his pocket and lit it as he went back into his introspection.
It really seemed like he craved for one thing his ancestors have had in the past. According to the diaries, they've always managed to find friendly connections with acquaintances which lasted generations. His ancestors always befriended their ancestor's next of kin within the criminal underworld and maintained cordial relationships. Due to how long his bloodline has not been involved in criminal activity, he seems to be unrecognizable by his ancestor's acquaintances' kin. Nothing against the crew he was in, they're great people, but these friendly connections really left a mark on Eddie due to how his parents' reign of terror over him would force him to not have any lasting friendships throughout the years...
"It looks like I'll have to make some myself," EddieClaxton shrugged.
"I still have all the time in the world after all." He said between cigar puffs. He still had his entire criminal career in front of him.
"No need to rush." |
