"It began like any other day, we had tried to do our best. Our leader at the time, Reiner Braun had received a phone call from Zeke Peralta. We were to attack with bombs as the others in the warrior unit picked off the Eldians, disguised as members of the Eldian organization members..." Annie's mind flashed back to when she had first heard the plan, she wanted to yell that this was a bad idea. Only Reiner would hear none of it, taking it as far to tackle her and hold her in a choke hold as Bertolt watched with fear in his eyes. That day had been no picnic for them either. They had lost many friends, it had been one of the few things that he grew to dislike, Bertolt had continued to look at her like she had lost her own mind instead of Reiner, that was the look he gave both of them. He wanted nothing to do with this mission and it had been forced upon him. Reiner was the only one who believed in the foundation, wanting to bring pride and honor to his family. "Reiner Braun had led the charge in that area, myself and Bertolt wanted to go back home. We had been told that we were doing intel gathering, we were never told that we had to kill people. We assumed wrong, while Reiner had continued on his course and so we did it. We had obtained the explosive hardware and made for the Waterfront piers." As Annie retold the story, she had remembered the night before, her talks with Eren. She had warned him to stay away and oddly he did, he did not find it suspicious but after everything he had seen happen on the pier. It had been almost too much for him to believe that he could have died that day. Now she remembered the screams, how her leader had shown no remorse with what they had done. At least Bertolt had, he was broken, he had been the one to dig his own grave. He was waiting to die, he had wanted to be free from this all. In some odd way, so did she. Her son was going to grow up with a mother who had nearly committed genocide all for the sake of her other family, she had not forgotten that. She would never wish that upon anybody. "Reiner had attacked the restaurants, he had made it quick for the people inside, he did not want to prolong their suffering. Quick for them and easy for him to get over, maybe he had a bit of remorse in him. I do not know. I and Bertolt had done the same, we had rushed back to our stations once the foundation officers disguised as Eldian members had passed by, we got into action." Annie shut her eyes tightly, she heard the gunshots and screams. Her hands held onto the metal table, her breathing became heavier and she needed to calm down as she remembered those horrid moments. She had suppressed them like a warrior should do, as a cold person but here she was, the Eldian member that killed her own people. "Maybe I could have saved them, I could have informed some people but that would have meant the people I have dying at my home. This was a war, Miss. Santiago and I had to do my part or suffer my own consequences, this part of being a warrior is what I hate the most. It's not about honor or leaving a real legacy, it's about surviving..." |
