Quality vs Quantity (A flawed kickback sys of credits) Started by: Aladdin on Jul 03, '19 00:02

Aladdin always big on supporting locals businesses was walking thru the bazaar by the Agrabah Palace. He chatted with some traders, as he always does and took some account of what the customers were saying. He then wondered about some more to make sure that the concerns weren't just from a certain vendor but from a bigger cross section of traders from across sectors. Didnt matter who Aladdin spoke with. From retailers of Crown & Cork to manufacturers with ambiguous names. They all shared similar concerns. Running a bazaar was something Aladdin took seriously. It was his pride and joy to breath life into such spaces. He took out his flask, had a swig and cleared his throat. Just as he was about to speak, Abu started jumping about. He figured it was time to feed him. So Aladdin walked over to the local produce retailer and bought Pennsylvanian imported bananas for Abu to munch on. Once Abu had settled down, Aladdin fixed his vest and his hat. Dusted off his pajamas and walked up to a place they called city hall in La Cosa Nostra.

So as I spoke with the vendors. Business is good, profits are up and the bazaars seem to be bustling with customers. They however had some concerns over something we call kick back credits. I ran into one of the oldest traders in the bazaar. A man I respect very highly. And he spoke of how those kickbacks were built based on quality before vs quantity. And that makes sense. If the quality of the product you put out is better than then your competitors, you should get higher kickbacks as the possibility of a return customer is higher. This is fairly evident with the long list of trusted clients this trader has in his contacts book. However, he does say that these days; the quality of the product doesn't matter much, as long as he funnels higher quantity.

Aladdin takes off his hat and puts it in his vest pocket, letting the cool summer breeze run thru his hair.

And see there inlays the problem. Now we got all these products in the streets to the business districts that are premised on volume rather than Quality. Now don't take this the wrong way. Just because someone is providing volume, doesn't mean they aren't providing quality. But in vast majority of the cases volume beats quality. And thats unfair to the traders that put in the time to fine tune their product to the finest of details. Why are they suffering from such crap luck of the lottery? Where the winners seem to be the ones flooding the markets with quantity over quality? There needs to be a balance so to speak for the ones that actually believe in quality over quantity. Because if the current kickback system persists this way. The markets will be cleaned out of traders that cherish quality, and will be flooded with lower quality product line that provides quantity and not caring so much for quality. As this previous trader stated, there was a time, when one quality product would make it rain kickbacks, now there is no such luck. The lottery has destroyed the manufacturing of quality and put the onus on quantity.

Aladdin takes out a letter written by the old trader to the men at city hall and places it in their mail box at the front door.

I am sure, there are others that have opinions pertaining to this matter. I would certainly like to hear them.

Aladdin walked over to the nearest retailer of legal services and started figuring out what needed to be done further to make this system of kickbacks more fairer to the quality outlets. As he opened the floor for the next set of orators to present their arguments.

Jester rode his unicycle in and parked it next to Aladdin's magic carpet.  He pulled an apple from behind his ear and handed over to Abu to make him happy.  It was always easy to make a monkey happy.

"Aladdin sir, thank you for bringing this issue to the streets.  I am always happy to offer contributions to our community like this in our streets.  While I freely admit that I visit the business districts of our fine country with maybe a less than stellar effort for the purposes you describe - I can understand the slippery slope that this can take us down.  I've never really seen it as a problem so much as a fact of the state of the world we live in.  That said - if the gods were to change things to a quality system, I am sure that it's something that I can work within as well.  I, for one, am not sure how the gods would come to police this system without overexerting themselves.  I, personally, have long viewed the business district as a less formal place to develop interaction skills, possibly establish their traits and maybe improve themselves a bit.  The issue, seems to be that there is a very diverse variance in the skill level here in this world.  To set a standard may discourage some people.  I'm honestly not sure what the correct answer is for everyone, but rather here to say that I could work with whatever is good for most."

Jester gets back on his unicycle and lights a smoke before he starts juggling.

How many people does it take to change a lightbulb underwater??

The results are shocking

Aladdin was in the vicinity monkeying around with his monkey, trying to find some nice roses to light up Jasmine's night. Or her feelings rather. Anyways, he heard Jester step forward and make his point. Aladdin listened attentively and waited for Jester to finish his opinion. Always a man of the people. Aladdin pulled a cigar from his cigar case that he always carried in his pocket, and offered it to Jester. Then he takes a sip of his whiskey flask and steps forward a little bit.

I welcome your opinion Mr Jester. You have made a fine point as to what would be deemed the Standard of sorts. And I can see where the confusion would be. As you stated yourself, the onus on volume makes you feel more compelled to get quantity out over quality. And given the current system I understand that. As you also stated, you wouldn't have any trouble adjusting your quality if the kickback system was fixed.

Aladdin takes his cigar and lights it. Takes a deep puff and begins to speak again.

See as I was doing my rounds this morning thru the bazaar and speaking with the old trader I spoke of this morning. He said there use to be a different kind of a kickback system. One that rewarded quality and quantity. The one we have now simply with the lottery, puts the onus on quantity, undercutting quality. Now perhaps I am a man that demands more refinement. I don't know if thats a flaw or strength. But being a leader, I will never sway in the way of less refinement. I feel like its my job of sorts, to refine the men and women that work with me. If I didn't make them better at their craft, what kind of a leader am I?

Aladdin leans back a little and flexes his muscles a little thinking about leadership. Then snapping back. The summer breeze had him distracted.

Leadership, thats a conversation for another day of course. But I just wanted to highlight that the bazaars and the businesses have been here for ages. And there was a system previously that rewarded quality and quantity. This current lottery system isn't that. And hence in my opinion flawed as it rewards mediocrity in quality.

Aladdin takes another deep puff of his cigar and goes back into the bazaar, looking for his roses. As he awaited another orator to make their opinion heard.

Baby Beel removed his pacifier and spoke.

"Bow (I have actually thought about this a bit. Some people establish businesses and go onto the streets in extreme quantities, at least compared to others. I think it is amazing that they have a passion for this, but they hold much of the foreign currency earned from doing so. To get a decent slice of the pie, one has to match their pace, which is much, much more than the average mafiosi. Even when we do establish a business or visit the streets, we will get rewarded much less.)"

"Chika (However, they are very welcome in this thing of ours. They keep this side of our criminal life very much alive. My opinion is that there should be a cap for people who earn much of the foreign currency. They can establish businesses and go onto the streets as much as they want, but they will only be rewarded up to a certain percentage. In this way, quantity won't have such a powerful impact, more people will have a chance, and these passionate businessmen and street goers can still do their thing as much as they want.)"

Aladdin was smelling some roses to pick out for Jasmine as he heard Baby_Beel take center stage. He listened carefully as he finished his insights into the debate at hand. After he heard the whole conversation. Not sure what he could offer Baby_Beel given his age, he grabbed some milk from the dairy vendor next to him. I guess when in doubt...got milk?!?! He hands Baby some milk and then starts to speak.

Who thought a baby would make such great points? I love it.

Aladdin exclaims with a smile on his face.

See from the two remarkable points you've made, I basically hear you say two things.

a) There are those that are passionate about just doing business in the streets and business districts. And due to their sheer prowess of volume, it takes aways from everyone else's opportunities to win the lottery.

b) Perhaps to make it a fair system. Maybe there should be a cap on these folks that do so much business in the business districts and streets just based on volume.

Aladdin takes a step back as he didnt want to get the baby involved in any smoke from his cigar. He takes a deep puff, thinks for a second and responds.

See as much as I like what you are saying. The reason I am out here, is due to the fact that quality isn't cherished as much as quantity. If we were to place a cap on how much could be rewarded. That basically does the same thing for the volume crowd as it does for the quality control crowd now.

Aladdin wipes the sweat off his forehead and takes a deep breath, as there was no easy answer to this problem.

See its why I stated, the previous system prior to the lottery system use to help the quality crowd as well. As I sharing the story of the old trader. He use to say, at times he would sell a quality product and wake up with 30-40 units of kickbacks in foreign currency. Now he's basically succumbed to volume disbursements. And due to that the quality of product being manufactured is falling, because the kickbacks are better for business with volume and lower quality. Its certainly not fair to the people that pay attention to detail, thats for sure. And I cant say I have a straight answer either. I just know from my conversations with the traders, the lottery system is flawed and needs to be addressed.

Aladdin withdraws back to the bazaar as he looks for more roses. Awaiting other opinions on the matter at hand.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Avard was pleased to hear a rare discussion taking place and after listening to the opinions of those before him, he decided to offer his own thoughts on the matter.

No system is perfect, but there is very little that can't be controlled by the mob if they have an appetite to do so. If those with the power in this great nation decided, for example and for want of a better term, they didn't want to keep hearing "lots of shite" spouted from every corner, they could police that themselves. They have plenty of people on their payroll who could monitor and subsequently enforce anything that was determined by the powers that be.

However, if the issue is more one of 'those people are doing more than we are and earning more because of it' and their product doesn't lack for quality, then that poses a different set of outcomes. I would imagine everything from trying to bring those high earners into your crew to putting them in the ground would be reasonable propositions. I guess it just depends on how much of a problem it is perceived to be.

Avard shrugs.

I can't imagine the fat cats in City Hall will be looking to do much to regulate it though. They like commerce the way it is, it seems to me.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Aladdin had just finished picking roses for Jasmine. He was looking for some stuff to munch on as well. When he heard @AvardT saying his bit in the streets. He listened, as all these thoughts raced thru his mind. He then hands his roses to Genie and walks up to where AvardT was standing. He gives him a handshake and offers him a cigar before Aladdin walked to the center of where everyone was standing.

See one of the reason I came to the forefront of streets is to bring light to this issue. Had some people not showed concerns about this system, I probably wouldn't have highlighted it. The powers that be from town hall that put this lottery system in place are also the ones that scraped the previous system that actually took quality into account. So for them its really just as easy as Genie over there, snapping his fingers and granting a wish. However don't be asking Genie for wishes just yet! He's still got mine to fulfill!!!

Aladdin laughs a little, takes out his flask and has a swig.

Now onto the second part where you highlighted that business is booming. From my perspective being a prince and all and having to run bazaars like these around my Palace of Agrabah and such. Ive come to understand economics is something that takes time to actually show real fruit. Its not like you make a decision now and you see the results now. It takes time for it

Aladdin dusts of his vest and fixes it. Looking down, gathering his thoughts and then back at the crowd in attendance.

See if it was about the rewards and stacking members that did business that way. I wouldn't mind. It would boil down to recruitment and such. Which I am sure, can be done. Im sure certain leaders and cities recruit based upon that. Lets be honest, its a nice revenue stream. I am not out here to do that. My purpose for brining this topic to the forefront has other reasons. I want to maintain a certain level of Quality

Aladdin flexes a little bit and paces back and forth a little then stopping on a dime.

For example, that trader I keep talking about. The old man, that believes in quality of the product over quantity. Once he is gone, his business will go extinct. And along with him his whole line of manufacturing that took pride in attention to detail. Once hes gone, perhaps we will never have anyone that puts the onus on details again. And then everyone will follow the current trader that believe in low quality and high quantity. And that will set forth a economic cycle, where the only thing that would matter is quantity taking away any craftsmanship that believes in quality.

Aladdin takes a deep breath scratching his head.

Now the question then becomes, is that what we want this place to become? An overfloded marked of sub level products that everyone glances over but, none actually appreciates? Thats what today market is starting to look more and more like. And the current lottery system promotes this type of subpar level of manufacturing. Now again, not much of this is in our hands. We can only raise concerns. I have done that as a leader, as someone that thinks this system is faulty. But if this is the wave of the future. Then perhaps we all need to succumb to this and start manufacturing subpar products that none really appreciates except the lottery system. Would be the end of quality manufacturing as we know it, but perhaps thats what everyone wants? I guess quality is a relic idea, and quantity is the new hip wave!

Aladdin goes back over to where Genie was standing and started looking for better products in the array of substandard products that flooded the bazaar. Awaiting someone else to speak about the topic at hand.

Report Post Tip
  1. I'm curious as to who would determine what 'quality' activity in the streets is (as I'm sure there are as many ideas of what is good as there are people) and if the standards would be clearly defined and shared where the whole community could learn to adhere to those standards?
  2. It takes a great deal of time to be very active in the streets and business districts and for some, that's how they contribute to their families.

As someone who does not gamble, my primary earnings sent up to my families has historically come from what I earn in the streets.  I'm not sure if I would prove as strong an asset to my family if my earnings in the streets were 'capped.'  I'd keep telling stories at the same rate I do (I really don't think that would change as it's rewarding to write them for me personally) but I'd feel bad that I'd have a lot less to give back to my family because the streets is where I spend my time here on our shores.

Granted, that might not be true of everyone who works in the streets.  Maybe some of them keep all their currency for themselves?  I don't know.  It's none of my business I suppose.

But, as a side note, I earn far less per day in the streets than some of my compatriots do dicing.  Should we discuss capping that as well?  After all, it hardly seems fair that decent/lucky/skilled/knowledgable gamblers earn so much more than me.

The question is rhetorical, of course.

People who have a system for dicing have worked for it and good on them!  Just as I work for my cash in my own way.  I only put my rhetorical statement out there for perspective.

Truth is:  not everyone is good at the same things.  We each bring something to our family.  For some of us, this is what we do on these shores and it's pretty much all we do.  This is our value: our vision, our entertainment factor (if you enjoy what we put out) and what we earn for our families.

I think it's difficult at best to define what is quality and what isn't.  Do I have a personal opinion?  Sure!  But, one man's trash is another man's treasure.  It's really subjective and incredibly hard to define fairly without resorting to technical details.  So no, I don't know that there is a fair or good way to judge 'quality' over 'quantity.'  If someone has a good way to do it... I'd be interested in hearing it but honestly, I just can't see it without alienating a part of the population.

And if the amount someone is earning per day is the reason to cap what someone is earning (be it from writing stories, dicing, etc) ... well, I'm personally not comfortable with that either.

Report Post Tips: 2 / Total: $40,000 Tip

Aladdin was hanging around in the bazaar as he heard Aurora_Mastrosimone speak in the streets about the system of earnings. He listened intently and waited for her to finish. Then before he walked to the middle of the crowd again, he had a swig of his whiskey to clear his throat some.

Ah! Its nice to see someone come make a statement, that earns their earnings from grinding in the streets and business districts. I certainly have a lot of respect for hard workers like you that go to work grinding every day to put immense amounts of products in the streets and business districts alike.

Aladdin gives Aurora a hand shake for her hard work and offers her a cigar. Then taking a step back continues to speak.

However, the argument at hand isn't capping hard workers that bring tons of products to the streets or business districts. It certainly isn't about how the gamblers of our world make their billions either. God! I wish, I had the where with all to do what they do. I wouldn't be in the business of Acquisitions then, Id be a Casino Czar.

Aladdin stopped abruptly for a second and considered his words and smiled as he continued.

Well I am a Casino Czar of sorts, I run the strip.

He starts laughing a bit, takes out his flask has a sip.

But Im sorry, I am steering away from the topic at hand. As I said, this isn't about income. My conversation has always been about quality. So for example. There are countless traders that will put out a product that is short, condensed and to the point. At times these products don't even seem to be finished because of the necessity to get to the next product. Since the kickback system rewards volume. I don't blame you for this. Or the team of men and women that believe in a manufacturing a line of products, to produce as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. My concern is very simple and has been since the start of this conversation. There are those that will take their time building a long, accurate and well defined product for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. That one product may perhaps encompass the magnitude of say 10 subpar products. But due to the current lottery system, the greater kickback will go to the producer of 10 subpar products vs the one that took their time paying attention to detail and producing something that encompasses 10 subpar or even par products. As for your next argument.

Aladdin flexes a little as he paces back and forth a bit.

You speak of what is considered quality? As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But some times you can tell the difference.

Aladdin digs into his gun holster and pulls out a nickel plated revolver. Then asks a gangster in the street to present his. The gangster puts forward a regular second hand gun probably stolen from a dead body post war. Aladdin take both the weapons and shows it to the crowd at hand.

Two similar products, do the same function. But one was detailed and the maker took the time to craft it to perfection. The other was mass produced on an assembly line.

Aladdin hands the gun back to the gangster and puts some money in his pocket.

Go get a new weapon kid. Ill support your next weapon, I'm a proponent of quality and what your carrying isn't.

Aladdin turns his attention back to the crowd.

So as I just demonstrated now, there are things that are refined. That show grandiose magnitude. Things that the community enjoys. These pieces of art are crafted with great workmanship vs a team of people just mass manufacturing subpar or par products. Good things take time, they take definition. And the previous system of kickback credits use to reward craftsmanship. Sadly the new system rewards the assembly line. That is my problem with the current lottery system. The old system accounted for craftsmanship, this one doest.

Aladdin walks over to Aurora and lights her cigar.

Don't take this personally, I have nothing but appreciation for grinders like you. But I do not approve of a system that steals the craftsmanship from a worker that believes in attention to detail.

Aladdin stepped back as he waited for the next opinion to be heard in the streets.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Maybe it appeared that he had come towards the Grand Bazaar rather late, but there had been so many products on show everywhere, that he had had Legolas to point out to him that there was an actual quality discussion going on the Streets. After he stood in the back of the crowd for a while, nodding and shaking his head, Rudy was delighted that this discussion was brought to the spotlights. As he had heard people talk about different systems, Rudy started to sketch, using some of the quality products that he found on the bazaar. He made sure to follow LadyF's guidelines and not use yellow in anything.

As a silence fell, Rudy stood up

If you'll allow me to add to this, Aladdin, I would like to make use of the podium you have created here.

I would first want to say that.. hearing the title of the discussion, I initially thought that Aladdin had no idea of the possible combination of the two and hence had not been to my Delicatessen and Stethoscope store yet.. Rudy smiled..  Or that Genie_ had spent all his time flirting with MarlaSinger and the two of you had not been discussing matters, but..

Before explained his little sketched graph, he looked at Jester suspiciously.
Where did that apple come from when it was not in your ear yet, Jester? I seem to be missing quite a couple of them in the apple department of my store..

Anyway..

He unfolded the sketch he just made

Before I actually explain what I sketched here.. I fell like most people that care to venture their opinion here seem to be agreeing on the fact that quantity is too highly rewarded..

After looking at Baby_Beel and AvardT, he swifted his look to Aurora_Mastrosimone, Rudy continued

I do feel it's brave that you come out and stand up for what you think, Ms Aurora. Yet, I heard quite a contradiction when you spoke. You would keep writing if there were no rewards, yet feel uncomfortable with being capped on the extra's your handed? That is pretty awkward if you ask me. Also, I think, even if it was meant metaphorically, that your comparison with gambling was a terrible one.
Have you ever lost anything from your storytelling? It's so different. Should we discuss capping gambling as well? Sure, will we cap the losses, too, then? Rudy shook his head

Sorry, but that's a terrible comparison of things..
You say it's rethorical yet you come back to it when naming gambling to be capped.

I agree that not everyone is good at the same things, though! Rudy smiled

Of course, there should not be any cap to how much can be earned in a day, but the whole system of the lottery is a bonus system.
Speaking for myself, I don't feel it's fair to think you earn anything there. You earn from drug trades, from crimes you commit, you get rewarded for achievements you complete. You win.. or lose.. from gambling.. I'd feel terrible if I felt all I had to bring to a crew was money I earned from talking to myself.

Rudy looked up.. I don't mean that as a personal attack, I have heard way worse when I was trying to find the Bazaar and got trapped in public monologues. Smiling again, he added Or public dialogues.

Looking up, he said
In my opinion, the mass production has ran out of control. I think the cap it the very least that should be implemented.

He cleared his throat. Rudy was not prepared to talk so much in the hot, dusty air surrounding the Bazaar.

Which brings me back to my sketch.. It's simple.. The cap is the green line. Let B be, say, 25% of the products on the market, then the line will change in level, right? One would still be rewarded for mass production if one crosses the bar, but it won't go crazy. Perhaps, with such a method, people that have production lines can focus a bit more on the quality.
It was pretty hard to come to this Bazaar today..!

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Baby Beel looked at Aurora_Mastrosimone and nodded.

"Bow (I was waiting for your input, as mine comes from the perspective of someone who doesn't really go to the streets as much. However, I do benefit from it, earning about 2% of the foreign currency.)"

"Chika (I had mixed feelings with the idea, especially since I really like active street goers. I think they make this thing of ours lively in their own way.)"

"Bow (I also didn't question quality since I think people's work already had some quality, as far as a casual street goers can go. I also didn't want to point fingers at those who speak with imperfect grammar. Some of them grind really hard in their own way.)

"Wow (There are also some hidden quality checks in place. There is a reason why people narrate like this. Looking good on the streets, with fancy arrangement to your clothes contribute to the share. I also suspect views, tips, and replies affect your score. Getting reported may also hinder you in getting a better share.)"

"Mow (I was thinking there would be a sweet spot, where the cap could be. I was thinking 7-10%, although I don't know how much that would really change it for the less active street goer.

"Mow (Alternatively, there could be another type of cap. Maybe 10% could be allocated to those with less than 1% share. They would be the ones splitting on the 10%.)"

"Mow (In the end, I want a sweet compromise. People can go to the streets as much as they want and be rewarded for it, but some people, the "shyer" ones, will have some space.)"

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Baby Beel did a cartwheel and continued.

"Chika (I hate to discount Aladdin 's emphasis on quality though. There are some works that are really, really good, but don't get rewarded enough for it. An example is MGK's Criminal Inquirer. That thing was beautiful, but I don't think the whole team got much of the foreign currency for it.)"

"Chika (For this reason, I guess I would suggest that a certain amount of tips and views can elevate one thread of products to get a whopping 1-2% of the foreign currency for a certain period of time. If that is not a good enough judge, maybe it can be instead elevated to a mod's attention. Then, they can decide their share of foreign currency.)"

Rudy mumbled

Or throw the whole lottery overboard, make them stop doing any rewards on anything, so things that are not meant for others to participate in can go back to the backalleys..?

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Aladdin

"The one we have now simply with the lottery, puts the onus on quantity, undercutting quality."

The one we have now can only reward the proprietors that every single person that passes these streets has essentially given their nod of approval to.  This nod is given through inaction, you see, the standard is set by the community as a whole.  Social norms and conformity is directly tied to how much effort people are willing to put into their community rather than be a passive passenger in this ride.  The truth is, the community lacks the cohesion and is unwilling to assert social responsibility on themselves, effectively giving control over to anyone other than themselves. When you sit back and allow things to happen, it becomes allowable.

"Since the kickback system rewards volume."

The volume is chosen by you.  A proprietor can't produce a quantity of anything that is below standards set by the community unless you allow them to.  A leader asserts standards, the members create or break the leader.

AvardT

"I can't imagine the fat cats in City Hall will be looking to do much to regulate it though. They like commerce the way it is, it seems to me."

City hall likes the community to operate with its own autonomy as much as possible.  They do not want to restrict the day-to-day decision making and micromanage every single aspect of the community.  They simply provide the tools necessary for the community to do what they see fit.

This world is a blank canvas allowing the citizens to create and enforce the social norms, and at the end of the day, create it in what ever image they like.  If the current image is not what you are happy with, ask yourself why?  What efforts have you put in to fix it?  What efforts have you worked on with your leader to fix it?

Report Post Tips: 2 / Total: $40,000 Tip

I mentioned City Hall as I was using the blank canvas to create an entity responsible for regulating this, after stating the mob could run it and it was well within their means to do so, which I think is your point also.

I didn't mean the Gods specifically as this isn't the place to contact them about ideas and I actually have no problem with how this works nor do I want it changing. It creates an interesting dynamic that places greater emphasis on something other than wacking. If the mob refine it, I think it could be great.

As to your questions;

I'm fine with the current image; I'm an associate trying to make a name for myself (you can follow my exploits on street corners very near to here), and I haven't proven myself to my leader yet so I am working on that at the moment.

Report Post Tip

Aladdin was talking to Rudy in the corner when a cosmic aura surrounded the Bazaar. Everything felt different, its like the heavens had opened their gates and let in the heavenly breeze. As Aladdin was basking in this aura, he turned around and was extremely excited to be in the presence of a Godly figure. They have only ever heard of him, down here on the streets. Men and Women of La Cosa Nostra only ever had the honor of meeting such figure in a coffee shop. Outside of that, usually not something the streets had the honor of hosting. This made Aladdin smile and excited. In his excitement he drops over a vase from the local vendor as he was making his way towards Squishy. He was so pumped, that instead of compensating the vendor he jumped right into the middle of the conversation.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for coming out here and addressing the community in this great bazaar. We are extremely humbled by your presence, as we know you have much bigger and better things to address. I know your time is of the essence and hence we respect you making time to come address this issue.

He gives Squishy a handshake and offers him one of his finest cigars.

Now to the topic at hand. I understand that as leaders we drive the change, so to speak with our actions and policies. Sometimes those policies aren't right, other times they are tough decisions that need to be made. We have seen over history that at times the leadership has over stepped their bounds implementing certain policies. And thanks to you, those leaders were warned and then put out of commission when necessary. Were all humans, we tend to push boundaries, its what we do. Were inherently built that way.

Aladdin takes out a cigar and lights it as he takes a puff.

Here is the problem with a community policing of sorts though. I did some research, hit the libraries and it turns out that the leadership that ran the GFC council 3 or 4 cycles ago. Believed in this sub par system of production that believed in mass manufacturing. Now as far as involvement is concerned as you stated

"The one we have now can only reward the proprietors that every single person that passes these streets has essentially given their nod of approval to.  This nod is given through inaction, you see, the standard is set by the community as a whole.  Social norms and conformity is directly tied to how much effort people are willing to put into their community rather than be a passive passenger in this ride."

And I don't necessarily disagree with that argument. Many leaders prior to me sat back and watched this crippling system of subpar production thrive for the very simple reason of revenue. The the product got sliced in half and more and more hands started to build one piece rather than a whole. And its not because we as a community were unable to put a stop to this. There is a deeper reason for this and it goes back to something Aurora stated. She stated very well that if this system of lottery was pulled, the drive to turn out product would also whither. On the other side, Baby_Beel highlighted a product that the late MGK once produced. High in quality, content and attention to detail. Something that the community actually appreciated. You know why that vendor went out of business? Because of the same reason I am out here fighting for quality. They put in a ton of work to put out a quality product only to be give 1% chance at the lottery. When someone with a mass produced line can come out here, give 1/10th of an effort and go home with a probability of over 14%.

Now the 2nd part of the argument you presented was:

The volume is chosen by you.  A proprietor can't produce a quantity of anything that is below standards set by the community unless you allow them to.  A leader asserts standards, the members create or break the leader.

Again back to policing. Everyone has their way of leading. Some like to baby sit, thats not my style. I like to lead with example and men & women follow. When they need help, I help. When they need tough love, they get it. Thats at least my mentality of leading. I don't think of myself as a production quality control guy, because lets be honest. What can we as leaders do? Ask nicely, then perhaps implement punishments? If the whole leadership actually agreed? And lets be honest, the leadership that houses this chain of mass manufacturers will never let this system crumble, they stand to benefit the most.

Which then brings me to my next point. When you ask that the community to police itself and contain the production via social norms. Your asking us to do something that is against the natural law of things. Your asking for trickle up effect so to speak. Curtail the volume, increase the quality and well have our effect. That sounds pretty good theoretically. In theory though...

The reason why we have this crumbling system of quality is due to the Trickle down effect. The proprietors found a loop hole in the system and are abusing it. And the previous leaders have allowed this to manifest itself. I however will not let it go on as "business as usual", because its unfair to the craftsman of our world. Right now how the lottery system is built is that it specifically rewards volume. Granted the product isn't always subpar, but to call it quality would blasphemy. And then when we do have quality, those vendors go quickly out of business because they get no kickbacks for their level of attention to detail.

Did MGK's ancestors forget how to make a quality product? I doubt that. They ceased to work, because of the kickback system in place at the moment...the lottery is flawed. And rewards subpar volume based production. And because of that, it doesnt matter how much policies the leaders pass, or how much punishment is handed out. That level of production will exist, because thats whats being rewarded. When your child does something right, you give him a present. Its called positive reenforcement. When they do something wrong, you take something away.

This lottery system positively reenforces volume based subpar production. The problem isn't the community its the lottery system. Scrap the lottery and go back to the way it was before this lottery system, and you will see trickle down effect where quality again will rise. And the subpar manufacturers will find themselves competing with quality craftsman again.

Me personally, from my ancestors logs have read. That my ancestors would put out one singular product the magnitude of 15 average ones. My ancestor would go to sleep, wake up and their compensation via kickbacks was what 15 average products would receive. Thats what positive reenforcement was for my great great grandpa for paying attention to detail. Its the same reason, MGK's ancestors always brought a valuable product to the streets. And the current lottery system is the death of quality and positively reenforces this flawed system of mass manufacturing of subpar products.

So when you ask we should do a trickle up effect of policing the community. I ask, I rather we had a trickle down effect, which will make the volume producers to start paying attention to detail. As scraping the lottery would clear the litter and bring back the value our products have lost.

Aladdin walks over to Squishy and lights his cigar.

I am sorry if I have perhaps hit some cords, was not my intention. I would just like to see quality being rewarded again, as it once was.
