I know this has been an ongoing issue since as long as I've been playing, but retaining new players has always been a problem.  Occasionally you get a player that will stick around, because someone will offer a helping hand, or maybe they just find this game intriguing.

So I am calling all veterans who have been there and done that to offer just 1 piece of advice to anyone who was new, so that they might not be so discouraged as to leave MR.

My bit of advice is simple:


Find a person in the family you join that you have chemistry with, and who is willing to teach you the ins/outs and wont just point you to the MR bible or tutorial.

Mine would have to be, don't put yourself in debt to anyone. Owe yours leaders a sense of gratitude but if you get in actual debt it can ruin your character.

I'm a huge advocate for helping new players get their feet in this thing of ours. I know for a fact that this game has an incredible learning curve, and some just cannot get their head around working for months just to lose their character to an assortment of things, including a bad shot on an NPC, or a rogue popping up and killing you, or a war that leaves you homeless or dead while you sleep.

The 1 piece of advice I would give, over all others is to NOT get attached to any one character, but learn from each death, and strive to improve and learn more each time. Think more about your account as a whole, and that even if you die, all that investment is not lost, but forwarded to the next character in line to become even better than the last.

Also, feel free to reach out if you ever need help. There are tons of players who do not mind taking new players under their wing.

There are a thousand things you can do in this game, but the most important thing to do is enjoy yourself. 

It's very easy to get mired down in the everyday hustle, the street fights, and even the storylines. Figure out what you love to do and make that your priority. Find a CL who will support your version of success, and do what you love. At the end of the day, if you are playing a game you aren't enjoying, what's the purpose? 

Find a coattail and ride it.

I think when a new player/char joins the group regardless if he played this before or are new to this game, is to integrate that person into the crew. So this should be a team effort from everyone who is active and in the crew. 

And as mentioned, get yourself a mentor who can teach you the ins and outs of the game. I fear that it can be easy for a new player to quit early if he doesnt know the different aspects of this game. That they only think its some petties, felonies & jails to get a higher rank and thats it. 

Be patient with the new member, reach out if you haven`t seen them in the city chat or via msg for a while. When you are new, its not always so easy to reach out all the time for questions, could be a little scary in the beginning. So basically send them msg to make them sure that you can fire away with all the Q`s you got. 

Give new characters a chance to shine and get promoted if its earned. Don`t stick with only friends you have from former characters.

I know trust & loyalty is a key to this game, and it takes time to build that up with new a person. 

But how can this game evolve and expand its population if new players never gets a decent chance?

Talk to people. Make friends in your crew, absolutely. But also, make contacts all over the game. The more people you know, and can talk too, the farther you can go.

Remember that this is a role playing game and that you are playing the role of a mobster. With that in mind, consider every action you take and how it would play out in a real mafia family. This sounds simple enough, but many of you are too fucking stupid to understand it. For example, if you are not even a made guy and you insult the most powerful boss in the city, don't be shocked if you "disappear".

Find something you like doing and enjoy yourself. Bring others along for the ride. Or, hop on the bandwagon for someone else's ride and learn from the experience. TLDR; Live and learn.

Forget about this place. Leave now. Don't look back. It's corrupt.

Remember that no matter what you do or have done, it's not damning forever.  Yes, you might spend some time in the 'dog house' and your lineage might catch shit for a while if you (for example) rogue... but no matter what you've done 'wrong' in this game, in time people forget and find a new whipping boy to torment.  Provided you don't double down, your lineage can bounce back. 

This game is very circular like a tire; one minute your up top and riding high, the next you're being crushed against the hard earth and you're going to be asking yourself why you even bother.  When that happens, take time to be a supporting member of someone else's team.  Tribute up generously, hustle hard, be an active part of your family - keep doing the things that got you to the top in the first place and in time you'll see the top again.  Just remember, the game isn't played ONLY at the top.  Take time to play and appreciate all parts of the game, don't just wait to be at the top again.  Sometimes being part of the team, instead of leading i,t can be some of your best times in this community.

Don't be afraid to take a break. Get up, walk around, go outside. Be it 5 minutes, 5 days, or 5 months. A break is always needed. You won't enjoy yourself if you burn out.

This is a game. This isn't real life.

The relationships you form will be fleeting or longlasting.

Have fun. Enjoy yourself. Don't take this life too seriously.
