A new venture Started by: JohnWalton on Aug 07, '19 03:38

John lit a cigarette, leaning against the fence of the pasture. The sun was high in the sky and the day was quite hot, so John unbuttoned his shirt. It was just after noon. He watched his latest acquisition, a brown brahma bull that was walking slowly through the pasture, imposing. Such a muscular and splendid animal, John thought to himself. A natural breeder.

The old man suddenly heard footsteps behind him and turned around. In fact, he was expecting a visit. Earlier that day, he had sent his son Wade to bring Link, a prominent P.P.C. associate, with whom John had business to deal with. In fact, it was more of a business proposal to start with. And it was really the two that were approaching, Link and his son.

John and Link had seen each other a few times and of course they had been properly introduced to each other, but John didn't know about Link far beyond what he had heard. He pushed himself off the fence and walked towards them.

"Hey!" John said. From the point where he was to the point where Link and his son were there was a tiny descent, which he descended with some difficulty. "Good afternoon, Link. How are you doing?"

The old man reached out to shake Link's hand. The son, Wade, passed them and patted his father on the back, going to the fence to watch the bull.

Link's gear could be heard clanking around. No matter where he went, he always brought along his Master Sword and Shield. Both weapons being quite heavy. He smiled as soon as he saw John. Nodding his head as a hello before shaking his hand. He looked over towards where Wade had walked over to the bull. He then grab his shield from his back and planted it into the ground. Keeping his Master Sword to his side.

Hey John, nice to meet ya' finally. I'm doin' great. Just keeping myself busy. Actually speaking of busy, your son spoke a bit about you wanting to speak with me? He didn't say what exactly, but along the lines of some new business venture? Well.. From that alone I was quite intrigued. Any type of business with money, I'm always in.

Link scratched his chin, which was clean shaven. He then looked over at the bull. Before chuckling a bit.

So. Whats the story with the bull?

John found the equipment Link carried very strange, but didn't show it.

"Yes, I want to talk with you about a little something I got in my mind, kid. Something capable of generating a lot of money."

Upon hearing the mention of the bull, John reached out, inviting Link to follow him closer to the fence. They both joined Wade, who was making grunts trying to provoke the animal.

"That beauty just got here this morning", John said to Link, staring at the bull. He took a drag of his cigarette before continuing. "I'm gonna put it to service very soon. It have to adapt to the pasture first, but soon it will be having fun and riding my cows, heh. I need to increase my herd."

The three of them remained silent, watching the large animal flush the flies with its tail. The bull didn't even seem to notice them.

"Have you had lunch, Link?" John finally broke the silence.

Link was staring at the bull. Stuck in amazement. He knew about taming horses, but never saw a tamed bull. After a few minutes he turned over to John to answer his question.

Lunch? No.. Not yet. Maybe we could grab a bite to eat? Link said ecstatically. Food was his second favorite thing in the world. He would always love to eat a meal before anything else. That and coffee.

Link stepped away from the fence for a bit to pick up his shield. He strapped it over his back and then proceeded to walk over to the fence again. He was use to being around farm animals. His family had lived on its own in the mid-west. But his mind kept on the current topic at hand.

You know any good places to eat? Maybe we could go somewhere we could talk about this and no one would think twice? I heard you have a drink named after you. He said cheerily. He smiled then proceeded to speak.

Either way, I'm fine with it. Ever since I got into Vegas I picked up a few names. Actually, not to long ago spoke to a fella about shipping costs. I may be able to bring in some materials from over seas at a real cheap price. Anyways, I'm getting off topic, how about we get out of here and fine a better place to speak?

John nodded and pointed to a direction where, at a certain distance, a tall wooden house could be seen. It was his own house, very close by. A 5 minutes walking distance.

"I'm sure Darlene is cooking some fine steaks as we speak. I can almost smell it. I hate talking about business with an empty stomach, don't you?...let's go."

John started walking slowly towards the house, still enjoying his cigarette. Not looking back, but sure Link and his son were with him, he continued the conversation.

"You are goddamn right, I got a whiskey with my name in it and be goddamn sure you will be drinking it in a few minutes, kid." John laughed hoarsely. "We will drink it as you tell me a bit about this idea of yours. What kinda material is that you can bring, by the way?"

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Link nodded towards John as they were walking over to the house. He put his hand on this Master Sword which was on side to stop it from swinging back and forth while they were walking. He scratched his chin again before answering him.

Yeah. I bumped into a young man not to long ago. His father owned a steel yard over in London. The kid didn't really want anything to do with his fathers business while he was being pressed to take over operations.

So while we were having a drink at a sino' right here at the Strip, I got to thinking. I happen to admire the look of the old medieval style. What if I could secure a deal with this guy here. He takes over and I become the primary buyer. This way all he has to do is just sign a few things. The rest can be done by the workers and me.

He takes a second to breathe before continuing speaking.

What do I need steel for you may ask? Well for a whole sorts of things. We could building new establishments, maybe even sell the metal we get to car companies, or and this one is my favorite, hire a blacksmith to make some weapons.

Of course this is something I got to thinking. Maybe even start up a weapon shop, and sell them. Might be worth it. Its not on paper yet, but if I move forward I would just need a few more things in order to get it running.

While they were speaking they had arrived at the house. Link stopped speaking for a minute while Wade opened the door for both him and John.

Thank you, Wade. Link said before entering the house. He looked around admiring the inside, before spotting Darlene setting up the table.

All I would have to do is phone up his manager at the yard and tell him what I need. He'll get it shipped over no problem.

John listened to what Link had to say along the way until they finally got home. The young man had good ideas and was committed to making money, something John had immediately appreciated.John took off his hat and hung it behind the door after entering the house.Lunch was ready and it smelled great.

"It's a pretty darn good idea if you ask me, kid." John sat down and motioned for Link to do the same. "Darlene, this is Link. He works with us. Link, this is Darlene, my lovely wife."

The wife, a bit younger than John and very blond-haired, offered Link a handshake. She had just set the table.

"Welcome to our home, Mr. Link! Make yourself comfortable and let me know if you need anything, ok?" she said gently.

"Honey", John intervened, "bring us the J.W. bottle, would you? I want Link to prove our whiskey and tell me what he thinks about it."

The wife nodded and, smiling, went to the other room to get the bottle. Mingling with the smell of food, a smell of smoke invaded the room through the ajar door. Wade had remained outside and apparently had just lit a cigarette.John started serving his lunch; beans, mashed potatoes and pork steak.

"Come on kid, you heard the woman. Make yourself comfortable." John said, smiling as he threw more salt on the steak. Darlene came back with a bottle and two glasses. She served both men the whiskey.John immediately sipped.

"So, what else would you need to get this business of yours going? I'm always willing to help a new friend." he said, as he began to cut a small piece of the steak in his plate.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Link smiled and bowed before shaking Darlene's hand. He began to unstrap his shield from his shoulders. He gently placed it near the front door. He kept his Master Sword still with him, sheathed within a genuine fine leather black case. The casing was hand made for him personally a few years back. It was the most valuable to him compared to the other gear. He then calmly responded to Darlene.

Why thank you, Darlene. You and John here have a fine home. Nothing compares to the outdoors then a nice logged cabin quiet and cozy.

He continued to smile after speaking. After Darlene had went to grab the whiskey, Link stared across to the table at the steaks. Nodding to himself in anticipation of the meal. Once the gentlemen had made their way to the table, Link grabbed the chair back gently. He then finally took his sword from his side and wrapped it around the chair as to have it hold in place. He sat down and then quickly moved the chair closer.

Thank you John. Don't mind if I do. Link had said while grabbing a folk and knife. While he was preparing to eat he continued his conversation from earlier.

Well. I just need a permit for a shop stationed here in Vegas. Maybe something closer to the sinos' on the Strip. As to help with the customer base. I could essentially then start up one of my passions.. A weaponry shop. Though this one wouldn't specialized in firearms..

Mostly swords and the like. Now that you say that. You've been round' this life for quite some time. Maybe you could pull some strings and get me an establishment within the business district? Either way, thats a dream for another time. Just a little something I got in store.

He chuckled a bit. What a stupid pun he thought. Link took that moment from speaking to eat some of his steak. After which was washed down with some of the whiskey. He continued to cut up another piece of the steak.

Though, now we got ourselves some food and drink. I love to hear what you got in mind about bringing in a lot of money? Link said. He took another sip of the whiskey. What a nice whiskey man. Quite a robust flavor. Especially in these times.

Link decided to take another moment to drink the rest of his whiskey.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip
John put a piece of the steak in his mouth and immediately took another sip of whiskey. He swallowed the and while still chewing the meat, he took the bottle and filled Link's glass again, inadvertently.

"I've changed my recipe several times in the last months. I think I finally found the final formula." he said and nodded, in addition to Link's compliment. Cutting another piece of meat, he returned to Link's shop subject. "I will definitely help you with that, kid. My sons will help you find the right place for your establishment. You know, to be honest with you, I had never imagined such a business. But now, I can't think of a better place than Vegas for it."

He took the rest of his whiskey and poured some more in the glass. Then he stuck another piece of meat in his mouth and continued speaking, while chewing.

"Now, Link, the reason I called you here today is that I've been eyeing a business possibility for some time now. A long time, actually...we were still in Philly when I first thought about it." He paused for another sip. "You know, we have been moving some weed, on a small scale, along with our produce. The marijuana, as some call it, or, the electric lettuce, if you prefer!" John giggled. That was the way Wayne used to call it. "Some mexicans from the border bring it to us all the way from Tijuana, but it's horse shit. And yet, we make money out of it."

John paused briefly to swallow some mash. Then he ran the back of his hand over his mouth, wiping it off.

"Do you understand what I am saying, son? People are paying for horse shit. Now, imagine if we can improve the product. Grow it ourselves."

John leaned back in his chair a little, relaxing. He dropped the cutlery for a moment. Now that he had given a short introduction about his ideas, he wanted to explore Link's interest on it.

"Do you know anything at all about this kind of business?" John asked, staring at Link.
Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Link stared as John poured more whiskey into his glass. He smiled right before picking the glass right back up and drinking a bit more then usual. He could tell he was getting a bit tipsy, but he kept on drinking. Whiskey had always been his favorite. After putting the glass back onto the table, he listened to John Walton. A product, and by all means a product that had well been within Link's family lineage for years.

His eye lid up immediately after hearing the idea. Link's father hadn't moved any product. He was more of a Godly man. Always sticking to the bible even when he committed the worst act of killing another man. Though his grandfather was a big producer and user of it. Link lived a simpler life then most of them. If it was going to make a lot of money, then he'd be all for it. Link took another piece from his steak and ate it. He looked back up towards John and spoke firstly about the shop.

Yeah, you know I never seen one aswell. I'd figured there would have to be a market for that type of weaponry. I might even hire someone to teach me blacksmithing. I'm sure it would come in handy. Plus it would cut down on some costs.

He then switched to the topic that John brought up about selling and growing their own marijuana.

Well. I gotta' say. You came to the right person. While I was little, my grandfather use to operate a gig like this. He taught my father but he never pursued anything. I was able before my father's passing to learn a bit from him. First things first, I'd say we are in the perfect area to start growing. My ancestors always went to the west coast to pick up some of the best bud. I guess it must do with the temperature and the soil from within it's grown.

He took another sip of the whiskey. You could tell by the way he was speaking that this had definitely peaked his interest. He kept on speaking.

..But if we grow it right here in Vegas, I'm sure we'd be able to make some grade A product. Plus, may even be able to lower the prices since it wouldn't be coming across the border. We'd be able to make a better product with decent prices. I'd say we'd make a killin'.

He finished his whiskey again, and continued to break up his into it last pieces. Giving himself a little breather before continuing on.

Once we get the operation up and running, we may even be able to distribute it across the country. I'm very interested for sure. When it comes to the hows I may also have the answers. The only thing we would need is the property on which to grow. Link said before stopping for a moment to finish his meal.

John let the weaponry subject aside for a moment. He opened a large smile and nodded, satisfied. Obviously, he had done his research on Link and knew that he was the right man for the job but he needed to motivate him to want to be a part of it. Now it was clear that it would not be a problem.

"Seems like I'm talking to the right man. After you finish eating, we will go to another property I run for the Company. It's south of here, not too far away. My other sons will be there, you will meet them. That's where my distillery is."

He ate the last bite of his steak along with some more mash. While still chewing, the simple man steadily continued.

"It's a big property that we bought separately from the others when we moved here. The whole property is registered in the name of a former employee, but the bastard has died two years ago, can you believe it?"

John laughed, delighted at how they could circumvent the system in that way.

"Never shit where you eat, right? Momma always said that...well, you're gonna love that property. I've been preparing it for some time. You will see."

He swallowed the rest of the mash on his plate and drank the rest of the whiskey on his glass. Then he patted his shirt pockets for a cigarette. He quickly lit one and tried to keep the smoke from going to Link's side by blowing it in the opposite direction. He also offered one of his cigarettes to Link with a gesture.

Link nodded his head while John was speaking. He already had some plans about how to grow the marijuana. He ate the last piece of his steak and rested his fork and knife on the plate. He reached for a napkin and gently swatted his face. His recent routine was waking up early to walk around the Strip and gamble at the casinos. He didnt have much going on at the moment. This was something that he loved. The hustling and bustling. Doing new things and greeting new people. He knew for the time being this would consume him.

I can't wait to check it out man. Sounds like the perfect thing we'd need.  He accepted one of John's cigarettes and used a match to spark a flame. He inhaled and lit the cigarette in the process. Afterwards waving the match to put out the flame. The light-faint smoke from the match and the darker smoke from the cigarette eventually combining into one grey plum. He took a hit from the cigarette and exhaled.

The state official are always behind. They are getting to big for their britches. He said while laughing about the government.

Of course we will need some seeds and maybe some good water. I have the right contacts for the seeds. If the place is near the distillery then you may already have water? I mean we could collect rain water.. But to make it the best we need some good water, no impurities. This should allow it to grow nicely. Then we gotta figure when to cut it... Though I may be getting ahead of myself. I'm just kinda checking off the things we'll need to do.

Link was starting to sound like a botantist. He had not much a clue about any other plant. These were his family's secrets. He was excited to put them to the test himself. He then took another drag from his cigarette.

Yeah im all done here. If you want to head out now, that be fine.

He got up from his chair immediately and took his sword that was hanging. He strapped the sword into his side while taking one last hit from his cigarette. Link moved over to the front door to brace his shield over his back. Everywhere he went his gear followed.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip
John smiled behind the smoke of his cigarette. Link's enthusiasm infected him and made him very pleased. He got up too and buttoned his shirt. Then, he went to pick up his hat at the door, and straightened it on the head.

"Let's get going then."

He went out to the porch where Wade was still sitting and glanced around.

"Where's Butch?" John asked to the son. Butch was the family dog, an old beauceron.

"I dunno." Wade replied wistfully.

"Well, go get the truck. We are going to Black Oak."

Wade got up and went around the house. Black Oak was the name of the Ranch they were heading to. When Wayne and John bought it, they decided to keep the name from the old owner. Wade quickly appeared in a dusty green chevt truck at the front of the house. John opened the passengers door. All the three of them would have to squeeze into the cabin and John pointed to Link to enter first. When they settled in, Wade started to speed up the old truck.

They passed miles of plantations before they hit the road. The journey went silent, eventually one of them would make a comment, but nothing that would lead to a real conversation. They were just enjoying the way and the countryside view of that part of Nevada. After about 30 minutes, Wade left the asphalt and drove down a dirt road. They were close to their destination.

There was a huge cornfield on both sides of the narrow long road that led to the ranch. In the distance, like 1 mile away, the ranch house was visible. As they advanced along the road, the view of the house widened and, when they hit the end of the road and the corn plantations, they could see, standing next to the house, a beautiful big black oak tree, which obviously named the place.

Under the tree, in the shadows, were two men with rifles hanging in their shoulders. Wade stopped the car next to them, between the house and the tree, and John jumped out of the car, followed by Link. The two men approached them immediately. Due to the resemblance, they were obviously John's sons as well.

"Link, these are Rodney and Duke, also my sons. Boys, this is Link. He will join us in this new project. He is the expert, actually, so if he needs anything, you better provide." John said that and turned to Link again. "You see, Link, look how discreet this ranch is. That is what makes it special, in my opinion. It is near the road, but it is surrounded by corn, everywhere. And it's a huge piece of land. We have a lot of space and a lot of privacy here." He patted Link on the back. "Come, let's take a walk around so you can see everything..."

Rodney interrupted him.

"Hey old man, the girl that Drax sent is in the house." he said to his father, pointing to the house with his head. John stopped walking. He had totally forgotten for a moment that Harlow was going to join them in that ranch that very day. And she had already arrived. He didn't really know the girl and he was extremely curious as how she would be of any help to them. If Drax had sent her, she would definitely be able to help with something.

"Well, go get her, then" John said to the son. He watched the son trotting to the house to bring Harlow outside. "I forgot to say, Link. We have company today."

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Link nodded quite calmly, showing clear signs the ride had made him thinking about a nap for a moment. He was used to walking long distances which normally kept him alert, especially after drinking. He looked around the ranch to take in the scenery and logistics. He made some mental notes about some things that would be needed. After a few minutes he looked back over to John.

Sounds good. We will definitely need the help we could get. This project will be immense. Though a few people with our connections, should be doable.

Link watched as Rodney went off to the house. He shook the hand of Duke before introducing himself. While he was waiting for Rodney to bring Harlow, Link made sure to let John know he would take a look around the property.

I'll be right back John. Maybe just in time to meet our new partner. He said while gesturing Duke to show him around. The first place he wanted to see was the fields. He wanted to make sure the soil was quite neat. Duke lead Link right over near the corn plantation. He stopped Duke for a moment.

One second Duke, let me just check.. Link said while standing over corn. He immediately stopped speaking and dug his hand into the ground. This was to check how the dirt felt. Certiain conditions grew a different kind of bud. If they want the best, then first their planting arrangements had to be pristine. Link felt the dirt in his palm until letting it fall back down to ground. He stood up straight and smiled.

I think this will do. Of course I'll have to pick somethings up. His mind once again trailing off. He nodded over to Duke.

Alright. Thats fine for now. Lets get back and see if everyones together.

Link and Duke both headed back over to the house where John had been waiting for Rodney and Harlow.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

There was a weight to the silence in the room.  The people in the black and white photos staring back at her without smiles or life in their eyes seemed to know something that she didn't.  Not really hard to imagine as she was so new to the life and was being sent by her Don to speak with a man she'd not yet had occasion to work with before - JohnWalton.

Walton was, according to her contacts, a bit of an old warhorse in this life.  He was a Consigliere and Left Hand Man, that meant he was far above her in the way of things.  He sure as fuck wasn't spending his nights digging up graves like she'd been doing of late.  Connections to a man like him could help her get out of that particular line of work and into more respectable things.

Rumor around HQ was that Drax felt she was really making a name for herself among the other associates.  She was a decent earner and she was seen around the streets and not dragging the crew's name threw the mud while she did it.  Granted that was a pretty low bar to hit, but she'd done well enough that her boss was giving her a real shot here... a chance to forge a business partnership with someone who could seriously help her make her bones.

Examining the items around the room hadn't yielded many secrets in how to deal with Walton.  He seemed to be a family man and clearly, he was a salt of the earth sort, but what would she have in common with him?  One of her greatest strengths, in her opinion, was in connecting with people.  She knew how to talk to them and generally get them to come around to her way of thinking.  If Walton hadn't been married (and maybe a few years younger) she might have used her charms to get him to think favorably towards her... but with next to nothing to go on, she was quickly coming to the conclusion that she was tossing dice here.  Either she'd win Walton over with her genuine skills and talents and he'd take her on as a business partner or she'd fail miserably and likely lose some of her upward mobility in Drax's operation for her troubles.  Not a good way to eventually become Made.

She heard the door open and turned towards it.

"Miss Harlow?"  Rodney said doffing his hat in respect.

She smiled at the sun-stained skin and squinted eyes looking at her, admiring her she realized.  His calloused hands fidgeted but the rest of him was as solid as the land his father raised cattle upon.  She suspected if Rodney had wanted to, he might lay out a man with a single blow if someone came at him.  The thought of that made her skin prickle and a slight blush color her cheeks.

"Yes, Mr. Walton?"

Rodney chuckled, it was clear he was used to his father being Mr. Walton... not himself.  "Just Rodney, Ma'am."

"Rodney?"

"My Pa, he's just arrived.  He'd be much obliged if you'd come out and join him."

With that Harlow followed Rodney out of the homestead and out into the yard towards an older version of the young man she had been admiring.  John Walton looked every bit what her contacts had said he was.  Her knee-length skirt flapping in the cool breeze she took long strides across the yard towards John and the blonde man with the sword who was returning to join him.  Her hair flouncing in time with her every step.  She extended her hand toward John first.

"Mr. Walton, it's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, I've been hearing very good things about you and your family.  I'm Abigal Harlow.  Most folks just call me Harlow though and I'm fine with that, if you are."  She looked around at the impressive bit of land they were standing on and the homestead.

"This sure is one hell of a place you got yourself."

Report Post Tip
John found himself alone with Wade for a moment. He and the son looked at each other, but neither of them said anything. As usual, John hurried to light a cigarette. He was hardly seen without one of those on his lips since he started smoking a long time ago, when he was 11.

After a moment he heard the door of the house open and turned around just to watch his son Rodney walking Harlow out of the house. John looked her up and down, as she walked toward him, into the shadows of the black oak. She was a very beautiful young woman, the kind John didn't work with every day. The man was certainly more used to dealing with other men.

When she got close enough, John politely tipped his hat and shook hands with her. He also smiled, trying to make her feel most comfortable as possible. Drax was a long time friend and he had personally vouched for the girl by sending her there. That made her a guest of honor.

"Miss Harlow, ma'am! It's a pleasure for me to meet you, as well. I heard you have been doing an impressive work with Drax, so good that he decided you could help us here at this ranch! Believe me, ma'am, I don't just let anyone approach this ranch, so you know you coming here today it's something special."

John smiled again, after saying that. His words sounded simple as they were meant to be, it was just a way of praising Harlow's work so far. A compliment. Only then John noticed that Link was approaching again, walking slowly with Duke by his side. It was good that Link and Harlow got to know each other, as it seemed that they would be working together very soon.

"It is, indeed. The Black Oak Ranch." He pointed to the tree behind him suggestively. "This is a great property and it is the center of my operations on behalf of Wayne's Company. This is where I make my good old booze and some other things as well."

Link and Duke were getting closer and closer.

"Now, Miss Harlow, I hope my sons treated you well since you got here. Have they offered you something to drink? Something to eat?"

"I had some friends who said you made a real fine brand of hooch."  She glanced to Rodney giving him a smile, "Your son offered me something to drink when I got here but I make it a point not to drink until after business is done.  I'm afraid I don't hold my whiskey others do - however if you'd be okay with it, I'd love a sniff before I go."

"So,"  She began to shift gears, "Drax tells me you're looking to start a new business venture and I might be of some help getting things off the ground?"

At the signal of Link and his son approaching, John waited before speaking. He pointed at them, still looking at Harlow.

"Miss Harlow, I believe you have met my son Duke here. And this one with him is Link, a member of our organization and a vital piece for this new business we are planning. Link, this is Miss Harlow, from Drax group. She is here to help us."

He let them greet each other while scratching his chin, thoughtfully. After both were properly presented, he intervened again.

"How about we go in for a cup of coffee? We can talk inside before I show you the rest of the property."

After lunch, John had the habit of having coffee. It was practically indispensable, especially as age advanced on him. So, without waiting for an answer, he turned and started walking toward the interior of the house from which Harlow had just left, certain that everyone would follow. Apparently, Link and Harlow started a conversation as they made the short walk.
Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Link made sure to keep his sword from swinging. The constant walking and the weight of his gear were starting to take a toll on him. He looked over to Harlow and Rodney as they were speaking with John. He waited until the conversation was done and before he was introduced. As things started to unravel, this operation was starting to grow. The more people the more efficient they were. Which equated to more money for them. When it got to his turn to say something, he smiled.

How's it going there, Harlow? I hope you enjoyed the peaceful ride on over here. I sure did. He said trying to keep his gear together. He reached out to shake her hand. Then went back to speaking.

As John said, the name's Link. Nice to meet ya'. It will be nice to have you on board here with us, as this job will take up alot of time and energy to get right. You'd think growing weed might be as simple as plant and let grow. But we wanna' beat the competitors, and with that comes unorthodox ways.

He paused for a second and turned to John. Explaining the nature of why he went to check out the fields.

So the dirt seems fine. Theres is definite ways to increase our yield. Link said as he was pointing over near the corn plantation. After introducing himself, he heard John speak. Coffee was something he needed quite a bit at the moment.

Coffee sounds about good right now. That ride on over here made me a bit tired. He smiled again, while  unstrapping his sword. He decided to hold it instead until they got to the house. John began to walk over towards the house and Link immediately followed. On their way over to the house he continued his conversation for earlier with Harlow.

Yeah. So as I was explaining earlier, this will be quite the operation. I can't wait to see what you could do here with us. You happen to have any contacts around the country? The one thing that will be the hard part is moving once we have the product. Maybe you could help us out with that? Of course, whatever you feel is best.

Link was a fascinating fella, what with his sword and strange way of dress, but she found him to be friendly and eager to make money something she supposed they all shared in common.  The key to building any relationship was to make sure you started from some common ground... in this case, their desire to profit was that commonality.

"This new Marijuana Tax Act they passed in '37 hasn't been helping sales I'm sure.  I heard some old-timer got four years of hard-labor just a day after the damn thing was passed into law."  She shook her head.  "Damn shame what's happening to the world.  Men his age shouldn't be looking at time in a place like that especially not over a law that wasn't even on the books a day prior to his arrest.  Seems like a publicity stunt if you ask me.  Filthy politicians are more corrupt than any fella I've met in our line of work - that's for sure."

She cast her eyes around for a moment or two, listening to Link make his suggestions on how she might best play a role in the operation.  "I know a few guys up in Wisconsin and Michigan who have greenhouses where they grow this stuff year-round.  They make a decent bit of cash on their product.  Certainly not fields worth of it, but more than nickel and dime amounts I've been handling."

She folds her hands in front of her as she walks, looking to the earth as she places one foot in front of the other, her skirt moving with each step, "I've recently been hired for a job by a Don out of Chicago, Mr. Levey_Posner.  He's a young guy but I think he's going places so I agreed to help him track down a missing person ... in exchange, Mr. Posner has made a substantial investment in my first business, which just happens to be in the transportation industry.  A happy coincidence and probably why Drax sent me to talk to you.  He knows what I'm getting into and probably thought I might help you move your product quietly into the hands of your sales team and ideally into the eager pockets of your customers."

She looks to Link through her long eyelashes, "I think the biggest questions are: where will you need me to move the product, how much will need to be relocated, and how often?  I suppose there probably isn't exact data just yet, but if I had a ballpark idea I could give consideration to how best to handle the process and whether I'm the right woman for the job."
