The Hooker and the Healer - A Soapbox Speech Started by: Emily-Renfroe on Aug 10, '19 23:58

The streets had become quite aflutter since the announcement from the Godfathers Council, and the excitement among the people of every city was palpable. Walking into coffee shops, lunch counters, and corner bars, you could hear every other Joe Guido talking about how they'd run things. Even the little kids playing in the streets in front of their stoops were all playing Godfathers.

In her office at the Sunset Springs Resort, Emily Renfroe had been watching it all attentively. In the evenings, when she'd sit out on the deck at Teverton Ridge with a cup of coffee and the newspaper, she often found herself lost in the same musings. Only, the question for her wasn't 'how' she'd do it, but why she would do it. After several nights of such musing, Emily took to her  desk and began to pen her thoughts.

Nearly six hours later, she sat back and looked over the hand-written pages and smiled a bit. Glancing up at a worn, brown leather shoulder holster, she ran her finger along the strap with the initials "GB" embossed there.

"Well, what do you think, Gavin? You always encouraged me to try the things I'd never done."

Of course, there was no answer that could be heard, but a tingle coursed up her spine. This felt right.

The next morning, Emily approached the gathering place where the" soapbox" had been placed. She held the speech in her hand, but it's words were already in her heart.

Stepping up onto the box with a hand from a gentleman standing near, Emily took a moment to look out over the gathered crowd and meet as many eyes as possible. The last pair of eyes she met belonged to a little girl, maybe 8 years old, who watched with eagerness. Giving her an easy smile, Emily began.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of La Cosa Nostra, and esteemed members of the Godfathers Council;

What a grand opportunity has been presented to us. As I look out on the faces of those gathered here, I see my own reflected. Eyes searching for strength in leadership, character, and wisdom. The Council has asked us to consider who among us might be the leader that will guide the rebuilding and revitalization of a grand city. A pair of hands to join with the current leadership of the cities to foster an environment of sustaining success for the men and women of our world. Today, I, Emily Renfroe, stand before you to humbly submit myself as a candidate for this worthy task.

Certainly, you are asking yourself what makes a woman like me presume that she has what it takes. Like many of you, I own a business that I built with the assistance and priceless support of my friend and leader, a man lovingly known to us as Wild Card. Before that, I learned the ways of business from a savvy and creative woman by the name of Stella DiVasio. While you may have heard of or even seen my business in Seattle, what you may not know is that I am also a registered nurse practitioner. As soon as I finished high school, I worked my way through nursing school as an escort- doing what it took to fulfill my dream of helping people heal.

A hard worker, a business woman, a healer. They are not the glamorous qualifications of a fourth generation mafioso boss; but they are skills and traits sewn into a woman willing to put herself into a place that needs hard work, creative leadership, and healing. I see so much potential for the districts of Chicago. Each area is unique and hosts a myriad of business opportunities for those who are willing to take the chance. I bring with me the energy of the Las Vegas entertainment scene, the business focus of the great days of the Pier in Philadelphia, and a host of other ideals from those who have inspired me. My wish is not for myself, but for a chance to be a part of a city that holds such a rich history- and a bright, promising future.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Council, I want to thank you for putting this opportunity to the people of our cities. The public discourse has been inspiring and enlightening, and I applaud you for sparking such positive movement among us. Thank you for your time, and I wish the best of luck to all."

With that, Emily gives the crowd a single nod and warm smile, then steps off the box.

Declan nearly burst with pride listening to his dear friend speak so passionately. In his mind, there was no person more deserving of a chance to prove themselves. Ever since he had met this young woman, she had continually impressed him with her grace and eloquence. She carried herself in a manner that showed she had lived both sides of the tracks, yet took the best parts from each. Her heart was massive, her loyalty unquestionable, and when she decided to work towards a goal, there was no stopping her.

Declan smiled warmly up to her knowing full well she would capture the hearts of the crowd, and Chicago could not be in better hands, if the Godfather Counsel decided to place their faith in her.

Luis stood by listening to the woman talk at the podium, a great speaker he thought to himself, a person who could carry themself highly, he liked it. He took a long drag off his cigarette and exhaled as the woman before him concluded her speech and stepped forward to address her and the crowd..

"A incredible speech, I am truly humbled by it. You have said some good things, and I commend you for stepping out into the streets and putting yourself forward. A worthy candidate indeed I must say. My hat is off to you"

Luis tipped his hat and gestured for the crowd to begin it's round of applause as he quickly slipped back into the shadows...

Avard was one face within a crowd of many.

An interesting speech which offers a little insight into who you are and your rather interesting journey to stand here now. Also, kudos for not giving us a branch by branch discussion of your family tree, which in my opinion (for what little that is worth in the context of this auth decision), should be completely disregarded from the selection criteria. Who cares what a corpse did? I would only care what you could do.

One of the things you did say which sticks out in my mind, is that you see lots of potential for the different districts of Chicago and the plethora of opportunities for them. Did you mean something specific by this? If so, what is it and how is it better than what is happening now?

A good question, and I'm happy to address that.

I do have a vision, but it's certainly not a matter of believing my ideas "better" than anyone else's. My vision is how to rebuild Chicago with a self-sustaining foundation that allows for constant improvement and innovation. It is the same way I intend to structure a crew, should I be given the opportunity: learn the talents of each individual and help them to maximize their skills to best further the family and their own goals. The same can be applied to a city. Take the Loop, for example. I've visited the business district, and I am happy to see the activity already at work. Part of my vision is to work with the movers and shakers to keep that momentum going, and build on it by inspiring and incentivising more business development.

But it's not all about brick and mortar business, is it? A bustling city is only as strong as its defenses. For that reason, another large part of my vision is building strong relationships with the other leaders that will emerge. I am a proponent of peace and cooperation, and that is what I'd like to work for in the districts. I was pleased to see the caveat on the contest terms that stated no uprising for 30 days. I think this is vital to reestablishing strength for the city, and it is my hope that peaceful rebuilding will last well beyond 30 days.

These are just a few examples, as I do not wish to take up too much of your time. I will not promise anything to you but my best efforts and my full attention to Chicago and its people. The job I seek is not to rule, but to guide and grow.

Thank you for indulging my question and elaborating on your ideals. I'll be an interested observer if you do get the opportunity to lead in Chicago, particularly to see how your style would marry up with say...Louis_T's. Fun times ahead, one would hope.

Avard tips the imaginary hat he would be wearing if he hadn't lost it to house.

Anyway, best of luck to you.
