The Training of the Guard Started by: Len on Oct 11, '19 12:29

Len walked into the crew HQ, on a dreary day in October. It was not good crime weather, too slippery for getting away. Len was beginning to think that his wallet wasn't going to expand much today, when his boss, Billy_Mastrosimone, strode up to him. "Hey, Len," he said. "Looking for something to do?" "Yes," Len replied. "Well," said the boss, "I've got some new bodyguards on my payroll, big guys off the streets. They'll guard me for a meal and some money, but they're not the brightest. I'll pay you good money to train them for me." Len agreed, and thanked his boss. He went back into the hall and down to the basement. He entered the room labeled, 'Bodyguard Quarters'.

It was a very large room, with cots and small tables taking up most of the space. There were guns and knives everywhere. Len went over to a clueless-looking man and said, "Are you the boss' guard?" The man said, "Uh, I guess." "Great," Len replied. "I'm here to train you."

Len led the man to a storage room where they had more space. "I'm going to teach you the basics of defense," Len told him. "Let's say that you are guarding the boss when a man runs up to you and punches you in the face. What do you do, how do you respond?" "Well, I guess I'd either run back or get behind somethin'" the man replies. "No, damn it," Len growls. "Your job is to protect the boss, not yourself. And you need to defend yourself to get on the offense versus an attacker. Here's what you do in that situation." Len pretends a man has hit him in the face. He falls back a few space, then darts to the side, kicking an imaginary assailant as he does so. Then he leaps, as if he were leaping on a mans back. "Try that with this sack of trash," Len tells him. After a few tries, the man learns to kick the bag and then turn and leap on it. "Good," says Len. "That will give you a big advantage from the get-go. Now, next you want to disable him. If he has any weapons, get them off of him and toss them as far away from the boss as you can." Len mimics this before going on. "Now, slide off of him and, at the same time, catch the guy around the neck and slam him into the ground." Len demonstrates this with the sack. Then the guars tries. "Lastly, you'll want to really immobilize him," Len says. "Give him a kick to the head, step on his ribs, anything that will knock him out or immobilize him. Then go on to the next assailant, if there are more."

Len walks upstairs, a little winded from his teaching but happy too. The boss pays him $1,500 for his teaching. "Well done, Len," the boss tells him.
