In the small village of Rock Ridge, there had always been tall tales told to the children to keep them from wandering off into the woods.  Some of witches or wild animals that would get them if they disobeyed. It kept them frightened enough not to tip the boundaries......

The most frighteneing one of all was the story of Mr. Boo.  We grew up in Rock Ridge and was a wealthy saw mill owner.  He was very friendly and always cheerful, the kind that never met a stranger.  He had a wife named Agnis. She was very beautiful and he adored her. They tried for many years to have a baby, but it didn't seem like it would happen.  Agnis wanted to be a mother very badly. She would often look after the village children while their mothers ran errands but it just wasn't the same as having her own.   At the age of 37, Agnis finally gave up on the dream of becoming a mother although it still weighed heavy on her heart.   

One day, a young new mother in the village fell ill and died. She had a small baby. Agnis had cared for the child and they were fond of each other. The mother had no family to speak of and the father had left looking for work.  So, Agnis took the baby home. She was so happy to finally have a baby.  

Mr. Boo did not seem to share these feelings. He wanted his wife to be happy and have a baby, but not like this. He knew he could not care for a child that wasn't his own. He tried to get his wife to turn the baby over to an orphanage, but she would not hear of it. That was now her baby and nothing could take them apart, not even Mr. Boo.
