I have been watching a lot of shows on the history channel and listening to peoples' theories on how they think the world will end. A popular date that keeps being brought up is December 21, 2012. They say that the world may not end on that very day but the process for the world to end will begin.

Do you think the end is near? or will life as we know it keep living and thriving way beyond our lifetime?

I think the film and the experts have it wrong and that the world will end this year.

We've already had floods, riots, crooked governments and various other problems.

But until i find a big steel ark to keep me safe, I will enjoy my remaining days playing mafia.

I don't think so. The Mayan calendar had to stop somewhere - but if it does end, fuck it and I shouldn't have pissed my life away. I'll be sure to smoke so much weed I enter a canibus coma and smile as the zombies break through my barricaded windows.

We as the human race are doing ourselves no favours with wars, pollution, energy etc.

Then there appears to be some sort of natural disaster occuring way too often, the planet is pretty fucked and it is getting worse.

According to Time magazine, the sun has been relatively quiet over the past few years. In fact, it has been far too quiet. Why? Because the sun goes through a peak-and-trough cycle about every 11 years on average, and in the summer of 2010 the solar minimum (what the trough period is called) had extended for two years, which is about a year longer than normal.

But it was to be expected, if one were to have put credence in the computer model developed by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. They released their predictive findings in 2006, forecasting that solar flare activity for the current cycle -- Cycle 24 -- would peak around the year 2012. Peak solar flare activity occurs during solar maximum, when sunspots, or concentrated magnetic fields, become more prevalent due to forces at work in the sun's convection zone, allowing for the "snapping" of twisted magnetic fields and the release of enormous amounts of energy.

But when that energy reaches the Earth, it acts as a sustained electromagnetic pulse (EMP), which can disrupt electronic communications systems, knock out satellites, and shut down power grids.

And what does that mean in practical terms? Disaster on a 2012 scale, according to some, including John Kappenmann, an electrical engineer who worked on the National Academy of Sciences 2008 report " Severe Space Weather Events: Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts."

Kappenman, who details what Joseph E. Lawrence at "Before It's News" calls a "solar Katrina" in his book Aftermath, notes that power grids could act as Earth's lightning rods. Echoing the NAS' report on electrical power, Kappenman explains how the sudden loss of power for an extended period of time could affect as many as 100 million people for months or years, not to mention cost as much as $2 trillion or more for recovery.

Unlike the pseudo-religious superstitions of those who place faith in the 2012 Mayan calendar end-of-cycle doomsday scenario, the Cycle 24 solar flare EMP catastrophic prediction/scenario could actually occur. The current series of M- and X-class flares could be the beginning of the intense solar flare cycle predicted by NCAR and Hathaway at the NSSTC, or they could merely be the precursor. Regardless, when they do occur, it would be beneficial for power companies to have protected themselves with electromagnetic surge protectors, something John Kappenman and the NAS suggested in their 2008 report.

At present, the world's power grids remain unprotected. The 2011 solar flares might just be fair warning...

Will it be the end of the world? Doubtful, will it change life as we know it, Hey anything is possible right?

Well they all said 2000 was the year world would end, I guess we just got to live while we can make the best of it for now till our end comes.

I agree. We will just have to enjoy life and see what the earth will bring for us.

There is no way to predict when the world will end. There have been so many theories and predictions that havent come true as of yet. Nostradamus predicted many things..they have been hit and miss. His prediction time has come and gone. I say we all just enjoy whatever time we have and let it come when its ready.

Our world may be fucked up, but nowhere near bad enough for the World to just end in a little under two years. The Human Species will continue for lots of generations to come. This is not the first time they said the world would end. 2000? pfft 11 years later we're still going strong.

I think the Mayans were predicting Obama losing his re-election to another republican in the white house... a sort of end-of-the-world, I suppose.

There are so many far-fetched and crazy ideas out there determining whether the world is going to end in 2012 or not. If it truley does end, it will be a very sad day for our generation and mankind.

But i will be sitting at home, rolling one last one up, and puffing away at it before i die.

It was the mayans that predicted the world would end in 2012. Because at that time they learned how astronomy worked and figured out the the rate the stars and such were moving. They figured out mathematically the would make a full cycle and reach the point the started at. Put it this way if they had started one month later, they would have said the world was going to end on January 21st, 2013 instead of December 21st, 2012. See what I mean???
