Chapter 1: Home Sweet Home

Tara woke up first as the golden sun streamed through their bedroom window. Their. Tara smiled at the word. The last two months with Oriana had been… bliss. A little bit of work in the city for Viktor, but most of her time had been spent as Hollowpoint. Tara worked. Oriana recovered and trained relentlessly, honing her skills with a bow and her body. Ori had been knocked around by the most recent target she had and, though Tara would never mention it, she assumed that was one of the reasons Ori had focused on her physical training.

Tara exhaled a deep, contented sigh as she rested on her elbow and turned to look at Ori. Even with a couple months of training, her beautiful Italian assassin had started to regain her physical form. Ori was sleeping on her stomach, elbows stretched out with her hands under the pillows, and Tara found herself lazily tracing her figure along her lover’s muscular shoulders. She remembered Oriana’s abs well enough from the previous evening, having spent quite a bit of time in the vicinity.

One grey eye cracked open and looked up at Tara, and the two women shared a smile.

“My turn to make breakfast or you?” asked Ori.

“I’ve lost track.”  She whispered. “I just wanted to touch you.  Just laying here thinking about things and feeling content.  It’s been nice being this quiet and the crazy so far behind us now.  I’m starting to feel like maybe this is really home now.”

Ori was quiet for a while, then opened her mouth to say something, then shut it. Most other people wouldn’t have seen it, but Tara knew Oriana’s face better than anyone.

Tara arched an eyebrow, “What was that?  Something on your mind?”

“It’s okay. I was going to ask if I could stay here with you, even now that I’m back to 100%. But then I thought it might be rude to ask someone that instead of them making the offer. But then I thought you’d be mad at me for even thinking I had to ask, so here we are.”

Tara leaned over and kissed Oriana, gently and for a long while, a hand resting on the side of her face as she did.  “I should have been more clear… let me try again.” She cleared her throat and rested her forehead against Oriana’s. “It’s been nice being this quiet and so far away from all the crazy things in our past.  This is beginning to feel like OUR home.”

Ori smiled. “I like it. Not that I’m worried about you and me committing to each other. Oh, wanted to show you something.”

Ori rolled over onto her back, revealing a tattoo of a tiger on her hip. “It was too dark for you to notice last night.”

Tara laughed.  “Is that why you were so insistent on doing all the work last night?  Didn’t want me seeing it prematurely or were you just worried about me touching it before it’s healed… smarts doesn’t it?  God it’s … it’s lovely Ori.” Tara stared at the tattoo, beaming. Tiger was more than just a pet name now, her heart swelled.

“Fuck breakfast. Keep kissing me. I don’t think I want to get out of bed, yet…” Ori smiled up at Tara. “... or maybe ever.”

Tara obliged.

The question of who would make breakfast and who would shower first was answered easily, as the two women showered together, then cooked and ate pancakes together as well. It was only afternoon when they headed off to their own corners of the house: Oriana practiced her archery and lifted weights, while Tara headed to her desk to read her most recent correspondence. All her mail was forwarded to Hollowpoint now, from her old New York residence, from Port Huron, and from the Sewing Factory Lofts. Sighing, Tara sat down to read. The mail had built up- might as well plow through it now.

Tara picked up the postcard first, looking at the picture of the Eiffel Tower before flipping it around.

Tara,

Thanks for dropping me off in Paris! Been a fun couple months, but heading back to Philly; I’ll probably be home before you get this. Let’s have a night out when I’m back?

Jo

PS - By a night out I mean an actual night out of drinks and dancing and fun. Not like last time.

Tara smiled at the picture of the Eiffel Tower and opened the top drawer of the desk to pull out a push pin.  Turning her chair around she hung her first official item in the house. The postcard was put on the corkboard behind her desk.  Tara took a moment to admire it and the milestone it represented in living here. Maybe she’d arrange for her things to be brought from the loft?  Was it too soon? It didn’t feel too soon, not after the talk this morning. Tara sighed, wistfully remembering and then turned back to her mail.

The next letter was postmarked from Rome.

Tara,

Enjoyed reading your last letter. You and Oriana deserve some time to relax and enjoy each other’s company.  I wish I was there.

Things on this side of the Atlantic grow darker by the day. The Sicilian mafia has almost vanished- your friend Mario is one of the last holdouts, and he’s only held on so long due to his legitimate businesses. Mussolini has been ruthless in ferreting out and eliminating the associates and mid-level men. The bosses are somewhat left alone, unless they achieve a certain level of notoriety like the Padrino. They should be able to keep their heads down and be okay, but running day to day operations is getting dicey. We just don’t have the men anymore. I’ve already consolidated our operations twice in the last six months.

Received a bit of a promotion, currently RHM to the Padrino. Rex approached me about making the switch, and the Padrino agreed. Oh, and Rex says hello to Brigitte. I think he’s still interested. Maybe we keep them away from each other, for both their sakes… although then again, maybe some time away to get off the radar here would be good for him. We’ll see, I suppose.

I mentioned this to you before, but Italy should be relatively safe for you moving forward. The government “confirmed” that they’d executed the women responsible for the chaos after the raid on Bacchus.

Which, speaking of, there’s all kinds of rumors here. Some people are saying he’s alive, but didn’t you say you saw the body? Did you look closely- was it definitely him? The man had more money than God; if anyone could afford to have a fake corpse on display it’d be him. How sure are you that he’s dead? Like I said, some people have claimed to see him. Others are saying that he did die and how he got most of his money away before the government came after him and stashed some of it around the city as a gift for the people of Naples. Wild times, indeed. But if he is alive, he could be a powerful ally for me, so let me know?

Keep me updated. Wish I could visit, but you know how things get.

Ren

Tara stared at the note.  The idea of Bacchus possibly being alive seemed impossible, but she supposed it wasn’t.  Her own mother had mistook the corpse of a body double for Billy and Nona Bella had also mistaken a corpse for a loved one.  Bacchus had great wealth and power and it wasn’t impossible and yet - how did he get out? If he had another way to leave, why didn’t he take them with him?  Was it someone on the inside with the military maybe? It wouldn’t surprise her to learn that, and yet, why had he not been in touch? His people were with her, he surely knew that she’d help him set up… what would he be waiting for?  Where did he go?

No, it seemed far more likely that Bacchus was dead, though it broke her heart to admit it.  She liked Bacchus a great deal, maybe even loved the man in a manner of speaking - though it was nothing like the love she bore for Ori.  More like the love she had for Jo or Ren. A closeness of family.

She quickly penned a response to Ren.

Ren,

Congratulations on your recent promotion.  I’m so very happy for you and it is well deserved.  You’re always working hard for everyone who you serve and I know that the Padrino sees this as well - which is why he’s pulled you so close to him.

If Rex needs time away, I know Brigitte would not argue with seeing him again.  As strange as it is to admit, I know she has feelings for him. I don’t understand it, I can’t even pretend to, but it’s not mine to judge.  Rex helped us and I am grateful to him. I would be happy to help in any way that I could where he is concerned.

As for your question about our friend, the god-king, I fear I am fairly confident about what I saw.  I know that it’s possible I could be mistaken (we were under a lot of stress and rushing) but I find it unlikely.  If, however, I should see the ghost of our friend in the flesh - I’ll let you know. I hope you’ll do the same.

Jo should be returning from Europe soon and as soon as she’s settled I’ll send you a longer letter bringing you up to speed on all our latest news.  Until then, please take care of yourself. Ori and I miss you tons.

All my best,

Tara

Tara then opened a larger collection of letters from Port Huron and skimmed through them. Gavin was doing well, if a little overwhelmed as the patriarch of a family. Still, he seemed to be growing into the role. Cerise sent a short note as well, updating on the kids and Gavin. Jack and Izzy sent much longer letters- it was clear that they missed Tara a great deal. Malcolm’s note, however, was a little disturbing. He seemed to mostly focus on asking about various training regimens that Gavin Byrne, Volkov, and Oriana had followed, and expressed some concern that Cerise’s training wasn’t moving quickly enough for him. Tara furrowed her brow and made a mental note to follow up. Sage didn’t send a note, but she did send a folded up painting of the Port Huron house.

Spreading out the painting on her desk, Tara then picked up a weather-stained envelope- the last one in the pile other than the random bills and advertisements.

Tara Mastrosimone,

My name is Roland Chambers. I am a member of the faculty at Princeton University, and I have a matter that I believe could be mutually beneficial for us. I received your name from a colleague at Vassar, Professor Dana Gibson, who mentioned your tenacity, intelligence... and material resources. You sound like the perfect partner for the venture I propose.

If you choose to help me, there is a likelihood of a substantial financial reward that would dwarf your initial investment by a hundredfold, a thousandfold. Who can say?

Please, at least meet me for dinner in the city and hear my offer- and the reward. You can contact me at either of the two enclosed phone numbers- the former is my office number at the University and the latter is my home.

Tara stared at the letter.  It wasn’t the sort of mail she was used to receiving but it did give her pause.  Professor Gibson was one of her favorites and the idea of ‘substantial financial reward’ was something more than a little appealing.  Yet, what the hell could this man really want from her? She supposed it didn’t hurt to make a call, inquire.

Tara reached over and picked up the phone, making a call to the Professor’s office.  She stared at the letter waiting for someone to answer and after a brief discussion with his secretary, Tara had set up a dinner meeting.

“Ori!”  Tara called out walking out of the office, going to find the other woman.  “I hope you don’t have dinner plans.”

***

Dante & Luigi’s was one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia, sure to endure for decades. They served some of the best Italian food in the city, Their reservation for dinner was later than usual, after most of the dinner crowd would be winding down. Was Chambers a busy man? Or was he just looking for privacy?

Oriana, deciding that it’d be fine to be eye candy for the evening since Tara would be doing most of any business discussions, wore a knee-length emerald dress that left one shoulder bare.

Tara’s dress for the evening wasn’t overly feminine.  Perhaps it was to contrast Ori’s lovely gown, but Tara found herself choosing a pair of high waisted slacks and an off-white blouse that was more typical of the style she wore while attending Vassar.  A pair of comfortable and stylish boots set the whole thing off. Her hair was slowly growing back out and soon Tara knew she’d be back to her old self, at least appearance-wise.

The drive to the restaurant was peaceful, and Tara made a few pointed glances at Ori’s legs as she drove, but she behaved herself overall.  Curiosity about the Professor’s proposal helped to keep her focused - even if the dress was tempting her to do otherwise. Once at the restaurant Tara walked around the car to join Ori and lowered her voice for her companion alone to hear, “Regardless of what this guy has to say, when we leave here, I hope you have no future plans for that dress.”  She gave Ori a wicked grin.

Ori just smiled as she looked out the window of the car. “Try not to leave it in pieces… we need the money, remember?”

No promises.”  Tara quipped. “Shall we?”  She said nodding towards the door.  It was these moments Tara hated most.  Part of her wanted to offer Ori her arm, the way her father would have done for her mother.  To hold her hand. To open the door and pull out her chair… with how Ori looked tonight she deserved all those things and yet it would be odd.  And so, Tara contented herself with making the holding of the door look happenstance and making her way to her own seat and giving Oriana a meaningful look as they crossed the room together.  It wasn’t the same, but it was the way things were.

Ori winked as she passed through the door, and the pair were soon shown to Roland Chambers’s table- he’d been seated in the corner, offering them a quiet place to talk. Chambers was tall, broad-shouldered, and his stomach protruded slightly from his tweed jacket. Still, he seemed healthy enough, and his face had an attractive energy to it- his eyes gleamed with curiosity and joviality. He stood when Tara and Ori approached their table, rising to greet them and shake their hands.

“Roland Chambers. A pleasure.”

“I’m Tara Mastrosimone, this is my friend Oriana Montini.”  She indicated to her companion. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Professor.  I was quite surprised to receive your letter.”

“I was quite surprised to send it, if I’m being honest. I’m in a position I never expected, but it’s one I can’t come close to taking advantage of on my own.”

“Well you definitely have me curious.”  Tara settled down at the table joining the man, watching Ori as she sat down as well.  “Why don’t help satisfy some of my need to know what this is about by telling us all about what has you so excited?”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

“A few preliminary questions, if you don’t mind,” said the professor. “It’s my understanding that you have some formidable resources- is this still the case? Professor Gibson mentioned your family was wealthy, but also potentially able to provide… non-traditional… resources as well?”

Tara shifted in her seat.  “Some of that is true. I … I do have access to some resources, not quite what I might have been able to call upon a few months ago, but I’m far from without means.  I also have friends with long memories and access to things the average person certainly couldn’t hope to make use of. Travel is still pretty easy for me, various tools, manpower, within reason of course… sometimes things require time or making deals.  And I can’t promise that-”

Ori rested a hand on Tara’s arm. “She can provide whatever you need, Professor Chambers. I’m sure of it.”

Tara blushed.

Chambers looked thoughtful. “And this manpower, we’re referring to protection? Security?”

Tara cleared her throat, “Yes.”  She nodded. “Though I can’t imagine what a Professor would need with such a thing.”

Chambers took a deep breath, as if preparing a rehearsed speech.

“Well, I suppose I’ll ‘cut to the quick’ then. In short, I’d like-” he cut himself off as the waiter appeared.

“Red wine. Spaghetti and meatballs,” blurted Chambers, as if to quickly send the waiter away.

“I’ll have the same,” said Ori immediately. “Pinot noir, if you have it.”

“When in Rome.”  Tara smiled. “The same as the lady.”  She nodded towards Oriana and turned her attention back to the Professor. The waiter raised an eyebrow, bowed his head, and disappeared.

Chambers took another deep breath.

“Miss Mastrosimone, I’d like to be your partner. I will provide you with information leading to an incredibly lucrative archeological opportunity. You will provide me with the resources and personnel we need to explore it. Last week, I received a letter from a colleague of mine, an expert on ancient South American pre-colonial civilizations. Joseph Martin is his name- or was his name. He was killed four days ago. A “mugging gone wrong” they said. I received a package from him two days ago containing his research; he must have known that someone was after him, yes? Well I have his journal, a map, and a letter from him explaining his findings. What Joseph found is… remarkable. If I were a younger man, I’d already be down there. myself.”

He leaned forward conspiratorially.

“However, even if I was younger I’d suspect I need some help. I want to go down and confirm Joseph’s discovery. If he’s right, and I sincerely believe he is, we’ll make a fortune, even if you account for generous donations to museums both here and in South America. I will provide the information. In return you will handle initial expenses and ensure that I’m protected from any “muggings gone wrong” here in the States, and you’ll also provide a few key personnel for our trip to ensure that we are safe, healthy, and well prepared for success. A few people who can carry a gun, a local guide, perhaps a medic. That sort of thing. We’ll split all profits 60/40, simply because while I could find someone else to provide the above services, you almost certainly don’t have another opportunity like this one.  You can have some time to think it over, of course, but I do have other meetings scheduled for later this week. You are, however, my first choice. I’m quite happy to answer any questions, of course. I’m sure you have many.”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Tara’s gaze became thoughtful.  “Surely whatever country this is in isn’t going to just let us walk out with such a treasure?  I assume that’s why you were talking about generous donations to museums and such. I’m sorry but I don’t know much about the acquisition of historical items and the bureaucracy-”

“No bureaucracy, Miss Mastrosimone. That’s why I’m speaking to you and not going through official channels.”

Tara smiled and nodded.  “I see. Now the picture becomes a bit more clear.  The risk is ours on-site and in retrieval. 75%.” She said leaning back in her chair.  “If my people bear all the risk both in acquiring your items and in getting them home to the states, they should have the lion’s share.  60/40 doesn’t seem really fair when yours is just bringing us the information and, I’m sure, getting to claim all the accolades for years to come.  Your treasure will be as much fame as it will be the items.”

“Very few accolades,” said Chambers. “While I will ensure that some essential pieces reach museums and some research is published eventually, I will remind you that my main goal is financial. And the 60% share of mine is justified, again, by the fact that you don’t have a backup plan. I can go with my second choice to provide money and mercenaries. Do you have a second choice of an archeological fortune?” He raised a hand. “To be clear, the 40% you’ll earn could represent anything from $30 million to $60 million dollars, Miss Mastrosimone. A counterproposal. If the total profit from our expedition is estimated under $20 million, you get your 75%. If it’s more, than you get your 40%.”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

“With that amount of money, you’re speaking like you’ve found a treasure,” said Tara.

“I didn’t, but Dr. Martin did.” Chambers leaned forward, excited. “Our objective is Paititi. The Lost City of the Incas, filled with enough gold, silver, and jewels to make you wealthy beyond your wildest dreams. Dr. Martin had access to the Vatican archives, researching another South American ruin, and he found a record from a Jesuit missionary, year 1600 or so. By combining his own research and knowledge with the information from Lopez, Dr. Martin was able to locate the city- or so he believed. This missionary, Andres Lopez, described a city teeming with riches. Paititi. Now in Incan mythology, it was allegedly founded after the death of the last Incan ruler at the hands of the conquistadores- a cultural refuge, perhaps, deep in the jungle. But also a financial refuge, according to the legend. Many of the riches of the Incan empire that had not been plundered, allegedly, were sent to a secret city deep in the Amazonian jungle. Apparently, the secret was kept too well, and knowledge of the city was lost… until now.”

Tara was silent for a while, she waited for the drinks to be brought to the table and when they came, she took the time to sip from her glass, savor the flavor and not rush to speak.  Her dark eyes examining the glass and then the man across from her calmly.

Ori grinned as Tara spoke.

“First of all, you’re a smart man so allow me to explain what I’m about to say is for your benefit and should not be read into as a threat.  In the future, if you come to sit down with the Cosa Nostra, never act like they don’t have a second option. Accidents happen. People get hurt.  All the time. Terrible things, to good people, and folks who are not as ethical or kind as I am… might cut out the middle man. So, to be clear, you came to me for help.  You need what I’m offering and whoever this second choice is… is second for a reason. So let’s not pretend that you’re doing me any favors. This is business.”

Chambers didn’t look cowed- not much, at least. Tara put down her glass.

“Sixty-Forty is acceptable, with me on the sixty side.  Your caveat about the amount is also acceptable. I will grant you the same kindness you were willing to offer my team.  I will make sure you get a sizable portion of the take, and if it does not meet our expectations we’ll ensure you make off with a minimum amount.  Understand there is also a possible outcome which is my team goes down there… people die, I take serious losses and we come up with nothing but a bad case of jungle fever.  There’s a reason no one has found this place before and a reason you need mercenaries; and as much as I want to think we aren’t going to find trouble along the way, I know better than that.  This, as they say, isn’t my first rodeo. So… are you still feeling 60-40 is fair or would you like to take your chances that a professional mercenary group is going to treat you kinder than a friend of a friend?”

Chambers studied Tara carefully. “You make some fair points. Let’s split it 50-50, regardless of the final amount. I have the information in a safe place, and you’re going to need me to find Paititi, just as I’ll need you to help provide protection and funding. An equal partnership. Agreed?”

Tara smirked and raised her glass, “50-50.  See, I knew you could be reasonable. That sounds like the sort of deal a friend would give to a friend.  To new friends and grand discoveries.” She said sipping her beverage before asking, “You said we’d be going to Peru?”

Chambers raised his glass to Tara. “Yes, at least initially. Who can say what borders we’ll cross in the depths of the Amazon.”

Tara glanced to Oriana, “How’s your Spanish?”

“Cat always made fun of me, but it’s passable. Still probably want a local translator, though. I learned to speak Spanish in upper class Madrid, not South America.”

Tara nodded, “Looks like I’m going to start my Christmas list a little early this year.”

“One additional term on my part,” said Ori, looking at Chambers. “The 50-50 share. You, I’m sure, want your fortune for the rest of your life. We need our share faster. We get the 50% that’s easiest to move quickly… even if the final estimation is off by a percent or two. Agreed?”

Chambers stroked his beard. “In theory, I don’t have a major issue- perhaps at the conclusion of a successful expedition, we can discuss trading a handful of percentage points for speed of liquidation.”

Tara nodded.  “Good thinking.”  She said to Oriana and then she looked back to Chambers, “Of course, I’m sure if this thing turns out to be as big as you’re hoping, we’ll probably have a lot to discuss in dividing up the assets.  It’s not like this stuff is going to be cash. It’s going to take time to find people who will pay for these things. I imagine, not having dealt in this space before, that there is a very particular market for the items we’ll find on this expedition.  It’s going to take time to move a lot of the more unique things. Items that are very identifiable are sometimes more desirable but harder to move. I got a a feeling I’m going to learn quite a bit along the way on this one… but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that all of this excites me just a bit.  I’ve never been to South America and the idea of hunting down and finding something that few people have ever seen, or at least haven’t seen in ages… well, that’s kind of thrilling.”

Chambers raised an eyebrow. “You’ll be coming personally?”

Tara chuckled, “I wouldn’t dream of not going along on an adventure like this!  Anything that’s this big, this dangerous, and this exciting… well, of course I want to be there.  If for no other reason than to make sure all goes smoothly. But, also in this case because I want to see this place for myself.  I mean, it’s the sort of thing I’ve only ever read about in stories - most of them fiction. Besides, it’s not the first time I’ve done something terribly dangerous.  Honestly, the last few weeks… almost months now have been very quiet. If I keep on this track I’m bound to start losing my edge. No member of my family has ever done anything like this before… and I definitely want to be the first.”  She smirked, her eyes wide and bright with thoughts of adventure.

“Well, Dr. Gibson did say you were one of her brightest students. I’m sure that we’ll be able to figure things out as we go. And while I won’t tell you how to do your job, my initial thoughts on a team were a couple people to know how to use a gun, a medic, and some locals for translation and excavation.”

“I think I know a few folks who will be perfect for this team.”  She smiled, “I’ll have to dig up one or two others but I’m sure it won’t be any trouble at all.”

“Well,” said Dr. Chambers as the three plates of spaghetti arrived. “Shall we enjoy our meal? We’ll be missing this sort of thing in the jungle, I expect!”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Tara and Oriana enjoyed their meal with Dr. Chambers.  The conversation drifted into less business oriented talk and Tara did her best to try to learn a bit more about her new business partner. He’d been a professor for fifteen years and was a bachelor with no family life to speak of. As he continued to drink to celebrate their good fortune, he seemed to increasingly enjoy the company of the two beautiful women- while he wasn’t leering or inappropriate, he was quite obviously a fan of theirs.

When the meal ended and it was obviously time to part ways, Tara spoke up, “I was thinking, since the guy who brought all this to your attention is no longer with us - the victim of a terrible mugging gone awry, maybe Oriana and I should see that you get where you’re going safely.  I think at this juncture it might be better to play things safe than to be sorry?”

“That is, I think, a wonderful idea.” said Chambers, polishing off his wine.

“You know, I’ve only ever wandered the northern wilderness,”  Tara said finishing up. “I can only imagine what the deep forests of South America look like.  I’ve read that it rains down there, a lot. That the vegetation is so thick that in places nothing on the forest floor grows beyond a certain height, it just doesn’t get the same amount of light.  And snakes… is it true there are tons of different kinds of snakes we’ll need to be on the alert for? There’s just not many poisonous snakes in the northern wilderness but it’s my understanding that there are sorts of deadly creatures like snakes in the jungle.  I should probably make a point to get some books on the topic before we leave. Will make great reading for the trip down there and leading up to it, of course.”

“Oh yes,” said Chambers. “I’ll provide you with the relevant reading materials. I expect it will take at least a few days to get things together? My assumption is that you could move much faster than any sort of officially sanctioned venture.” He smiled, glancing at Oriana’s bare shoulder before ordering another glass of wine.

Tara shifted in her chair ever so slightly, uncrossing her legs as she did, “Benefit of being who we are, the ability to move when and where we like.  Of course, I’m very curious about the historical side of this too. Will you include some reading materials or a list of books I might pick up on the topic relating to this city… or the people who built it?”

Chambers looked at Tara interestedly. “Of course. Happy to do so.”

“All of this makes me wish I had spent more time studying the history of South America, and the language of its people.  So much of my attention has been directed towards Western Europe. Of course, with good reason.” she shrugged. “Though, if this pans out even half as well as you’re hoping for Professor, I think I’ll probably develop a greater appreciation of the culture.”

“Quite. The Inca were a fascinating people. Absolutely fascinating. We’ll have so much time to discuss things on the plane and in our preparations, of course. Your earlier point, though, is a good one. Perhaps it would be best for me to return and ensure our information is safe.”

“Well, if you’re finished with your wine, I see no reason for Oriana and I not to accompany you home and see that you’re settled and safe before we call it a night ourselves.  Honestly, I think it wise we take as few chances with your safety and the protection of that information as possible… sometimes the streets of the United States are as dangerous as any jungle - especially when you’re dealing in the sort of wealth you’re speculating about.”

Tara slid her chair back, rose smoothly from her seat and then put a hand on Ori’s chair back, as if she meant to pull it out for her to rise as well, before just letting her hand touch upon it.  She realized then that she and Ori had been spending a lot of time alone. She’d gotten used to a certain level of intimacy with Ori behind closed doors, it was something she needed to keep in mind if they were going to be around others. As Ori stood and collected her purse, she smiled at Tara.

“Did you drive yourself here, Professor?”  she asked after paying for her and Oriana’s dinner.

“Took a cab. Do you have a car?”

“Of course.”  She said with a smile.  “You can ride with us. We parked out front.”  Tara lead the way out to the car, proceeding to the driver’s seat this time remembering she didn’t want to open the door for Oriana, it would definitely be noticeable here.

Report Post Tip

Chambers climbed into the back seat, and Oriana accompanied him there with a smile. She hadn’t talked very much during dinner, but she’d seemed to have made an impression on the professor. They made small talk during the drive, with Ori asking about the professional life of an academic. Tara saw Ori’s eyes roving around, alert, even as she worked on charming Chambers.

As Tara approached the apartment building where Chambers lived, she noticed a black sedan on the corner, seemingly staking the place out. Instead of pulling to the curb she kept driving with an audible sigh.  “Professor, I hate to put a damper on our lovely evening, but I’m afraid it might be best if we give some consideration to a possible plan B for your end of evening.”

“Oh?” asked Chambers, as a roguish grin broke out on his face. “What did you have in mind?”

Ori rolled her eyes.

“Something that doesn’t end with you the unfortunate victim of a mugging gone awry.  There’s someone watching your place right now, I thought it prudent to keep driving for the moment until we came up with a better plan than stopping and letting them see who you’ve been meeting with.”

“Oh,” said Chambers, brow furrowed.

“Is the information in your place?” asked Ori.

“... yes.”

“I was afraid he was going to say that.”  She chuckled. “Well we could take the good professor to low-key location while we break into his place and steal the items for ourselves… and by ourselves, professor, I mean you as well.  But the guys outside don’t need to know that. Any idea who these fellows might be, by the way? Rival academics? Government? Your real first or second choice mercenaries who wouldn’t take your offer but might want to steal the information?”  Tara looked into the rearview mirror and smirked at the old man.

“I… I’m not quite sure.”

“Too risky to leave,” said Ori. “They could be up there now. Let me run up and grab it.” She started removing her heels. “I’ve got running shoes in the glove compartment, if you can throw them back.”

“Other option is that I pull up to the car and we hit them so hard and fast they don’t even know we were there, then we walk up and get the shit at our own pace… together.”

“Also possible, but messy- like you said.”

Tara sighed and reached to the glove compartment and pulled out the shoes.  “You’ve been itching to get some on-the-clock time ever since you’ve started recovering.  Might as well let you blow the dust off now before we end up in a jungle.” She tossed the shoes into the backseat, careful not to hit Ori with them.

“Try not to get shot, will ya?  I need you in South America if we’re going to find a fortune.”  Tara fiddled with her purse, pulling out her gun. “I’ll keep the good professor alive and well - and the engine running.  Professor… what’s she looking for and where can she find it?”

“I have a safe behind the painting of Selene and Endymion…”

“Which one is that?” asked Ori.

“The Poussin. Oh,” said Chambers. “Woman in white. Kneeling man. The wall next to the bed without the window.”

“Combination?”

“4-23-64.”

“Be right back,” winked Ori, as she headed out the door.

“Is she… are you sure she’ll be okay by herself?” asked Chambers. The doubt was clear in his voice as he glanced at Tara in the rearview mirror.

Tara watched as Oriana strolled into the building, moving casually so as not to attract the attention of the people in the car. After sitting in silence for a few seconds, she smiled back at the Professor, “Of the two women in the car, you chose to make eyes at the most deadly.”

“Oh…”

“Like creatures in your rainforest jungle, the prettiest ones often are the most hazardous to your health.”

Chambers quieted down considerably, and they both sat, alternating their attention between the car and the door. Five minutes later, Oriana strolled out at a brisk pace, heading directly to the car. She winked at Tara, then got inside the passenger seat.

“Got it. Let’s go.” As the car pulled out, Ori continued speaking. “There was a guy up there going through your stuff, Professor.”

“Did you get a good look at him?”  Tara asked as she pulled away from the curb casually.

“Great look, especially when he was unconscious. No ID, though. Left him alive.” She frowned. “Like you said, government heat would be bad.”

Tara chuckled.  “No ID. Not reckless.  Probably a pro. Government would have an ID on them.  Likely a very bad man. Not sure who you or your friend was dealing with before us, but I’d say they’re no longer interested in any sort of working relationship.”

Ori dropped her voice. “I’d say the Lofts.”

“Amazingly I had the very same thought.”  she said with a smile, seemingly unconcerned about the near ambush back at the professor’s house.  “Best not to take chances bringing him back to places we don’t want to be followed to. Plus… the security is better.”

Ori nodded. “Shots is also an option, actually. Got a bunch of wise guys always drinking downstairs, plus Eric. Leo and a million guns on the second floor. Just… not as many bedrooms.”

“Something tells me the Professor wouldn’t be complaining, even if you and I would be.”  She tried not to laugh at that. “He was worried about you going in there alone.” She said quietly.

“Of course I was!” said the Professor, who was listening in. “Who wouldn’t be?”

Tara sighed.  “Well, for starters anyone who did their homework on us.  Professor, I’m afraid I have to ask a question that I probably already know the answer to… did you do any research into who you were reaching out to before you sent that letter?”

“With yourself? Yes. Of course. A little. I know you have your connections, and that you have some financial resources, and that you’re willing to bend the law when it suits you. I don’t have any details on you or your… compatriots, of course. That sort of thing isn’t exactly found in an academic journal. How am I supposed to know that?”

Tara smiled and nodded, “Fair enough.  I suppose I’m just so used to dealing with people who run in certain circles that I take for granted people’s abilities to dredge up things that some of us would rather remain hidden.” She glanced in the mirror.  “It was sweet of you to worry, but I assure you, Oriana is quite accomplished in many areas.”

“Well, that’s a relief,” said Chambers. “May I have the book, please?”

Ori glanced at Tara, looking for a nod or shake of the head.

Tara seemed to immediately recognize that Oriana was looking to her for instructions or orders.  And without hesitation she gave a brief nod. Turning in the direction of South Philly, Tara proceeded towards the Sewing Factory Lofts.

Chapter 2: Building the Team

Tara and Oriana had situated themselves in the master bedroom of the Loft, leaving the professor the simple choice of sleeping on the couch in the living room (a small and uncomfortable option that Tara was sure the Professor would reject unless he was hopeful to spy on them, in which case that would certainly be telling) or in the bedroom on the opposite side of the apartment which had once been her mother’s during her childhood.  Aurora had used that room before William was a twinkle in Isabella’s eye, before Hollowood had been bought… before Race Street Pier burned.

Tara liked the loft.  It had a simplicity and elegance.  She imagined it was quite striking in the time that it was one large open room, back when her Grandparents initially lived in it, before Aurora came into their lives.  She often thought about the massive skylight in the near center of the room which once had loomed above the bed which Gavin and Bella shared - at least according to the journal.  Now that space was located in what had become a living room. It was really a shame, if Tara was being honest. There was something, young and fresh about the place, that wasn’t all tied up in the ghosts of the past despite the view from the windows.  Tara felt like this place could easily be made into something new, unlike Hollowood which would always be tied up in the Byrne family past.

Chambers had lingered in the living room for a nightcap, but had eventually taken the books and wandered off to “his” bedroom.

It wasn’t until Chambers had begun his ‘nightcap’ that it hit Tara - the Professor would certainly realize that Ori wasn’t going home and she had no separate place to sleep here.  She wasn’t using the spare room or the couch… she was sleeping in Tara’s bed. That might have flown as acceptable if it had been her sister Brigitte, one might excuse such a thing, but it might make a man’s thoughts wander when it was two very attractive women who had been personable to each other all night.  Tara began second-guessing all her actions throughout the evening as she prepared for bed. Had she been too familiar with Ori? Would it matter if the man knew? Would he say anything? Would he just think it was incredibly hot and expect that she and Ori were the sort of girls who were into all sorts of …

Tara stopped herself.  Not because the thought was wrong, but mostly because it was right.  They WERE the sort of girls who were into all sorts of things. Why did it bother her?  Wasn’t she just saying how deadly Ori was? Wasn’t the professor going on about how connected she and her family was?  And yet, wasn’t the apartment - this empty apartment - proof positive how fleeting power really was?  How even the mightiest could fall if they took a misstep, if they trusted the wrong person, if they let the wrong person too close and made them aware of what they valued more than any treasure in the world?

Tara’s eyes wandered to Oriana as they both made their way toward the bedroom.  Not suggestively, but considering. Tara’s mind wandered to and fro and her silence continued as she made her way to the vanity, sat down, and began brushing her hair and kicking off her shoes.

Ori had stopped in the kitchen and grabbed a bag of ice. As she walked into the bedroom, she quickly shucked off her dress and applied the ice to her bruised stomach. “Nothing to worry about,” she said, as she started rifling through the clothes than Tara had left behind. In a minute, she was wearing a pair of Tara’s old pajamas- a little small, but good enough in a pinch. “So I’ve been thinking about people for the job.”

Tara stood up and walked over to her dresser, still brushing out her hair, listing to Oriana talk.  She considered her options, pulling out a few different items, putting them back as she decided against one after another.  “And…?” She turned to look at Oriana, still not having chosen what she meant to wear to bed.

Tara walked towards the small bathroom off the master bedroom and ducked inside long enough to look at herself in the mirror and begin brushing her teeth.

“I want people there that we trust with our lives- not just rely on hired guns,” said Ori, lounging back on the bed with her icepack. “I can easily imagine a scenario where we hire a half dozen locals down there and they stab us in the back if we don’t have enough of our own people there. But at the same time, we can’t just bring everyone we know, either. We’ve got at least a few irons in the fire here in terms of our businesses, and we need people to look after our interests here.” She paused, perhaps smiling at the word ‘our’. “I’d leave Brigitte in charge here in Philly. She can handle it- and I’d also leave Eric to help her. Don’t want to take him away from his family. Between the two of them, they should be able to look after Hollowpoint, Shots, the Lofts, and some of the other projects.”

“Mm-hmm.”  Tara made an approving noise as she turned on the faucet and kept about her evening routine.

“I wouldn’t call anyone up from the JV yet,” continued Ori. “Jack, Izzy, Malcolm, Sage… they’re too young. And while Gavin or Cerise could be a good addition… I just don’t know if pulling them away from the kids is wise right now. And if we took one of them, we’d be putting even more pressure on the other one. I’m inclined to just let Port Huron stay as calm and unsettled as possible- at least for now.”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Tara spit and spoke up, “I’m not pulling anyone out of Port Huron, if they ever leave that place, it’ll be because they choose to.  Gavin and Cerise included. I can’t think of them as resources, mom and dad wouldn’t want that. It’ll be different if one of them showed up at our door asking… but I won’t ever come with my hat in hand hoping to tap them.”

“I mean, they are potential resources in a pinch. But I agree with you- better to leave them on the bench except as a last resort.” Ori continued speaking, not wanting to stay on the point. “Jo is an obvious choice to take with us. We owe her an adventure, she’s one of our only friends, and her medical expertise will be good to have. She’s proven herself in the field. I think she’s a no brainer.”

Tara didn’t want to tell Oriana that she felt like she wouldn’t, couldn’t, call on them even then.  Of course, she also knew anything was possible. She wasn’t living the same life she had lived before.  She no longer had the luxury of pretending she wouldn’t, or couldn’t, use anyone and anything in her life to achieve the ends she saw for herself and this family.  In truth, no one was above that - family was everything. For family, Tara knew she was capable of literally anything and as she stared into her own eyes reflecting back at her in the mirror, the thought only bothered her a little.

“Jo is a no brainer.  Granted, I think after she’s been in the jungle for less than a day, she’ll again wish she’d never agreed to come with us.  Roughing it doesn’t seem like something she’s going to enjoy - even if there is a pot of gold at the end of it.” Tara rinsed out her toothbrush.  “For that matter, this will be a new thing for you too. And I’m not precisely familiar with this sort of environment. I suspect we’ll all be learning as we go on this one.”

“Well, I’m coming too. Someone’s got to look after you.”

She chuckled.

“Any Italian connections that you could call on? Ren? Orlando? Rex?”

Tara came out of the bathroom and stood just outside the door, leaning on the frame. Ori glanced up to look at her.  “I got a letter from Ren the other day too. I didn’t bring it up because it wasn’t too earth shattering, well, I mean… it could be, but most likely not.”  She sighed and hesitated thinking of how to say what she was going to say.

“Ren said that he’s moved up to the Padrino’s right hand.”  Tara finally settled on. “Rex has taken a step back to left and there might have been some hints that maybe things have gotten a bit hot for Rex.  Maybe he needs to get away for a bit - or that it might be good for him. Of course, Ren was musing about him coming to see Brigitte but… a trip to South America might not be so bad, if Ren was being serious.  Which, I can’t imagine that he wasn’t.”

“Worth asking.”

“There’s something else.”  Tara said quietly, her eyes looking distant, as if she were seeing someone in the room with them who wasn’t there.  Imagining a moment. “Ren says there are some rumors. They’re probably not true. I mean, he’s the sort of guy people would make up these sort of rumors about - powerful, rich, known to be doing things other people never could … but there are rumors that persist that Stefano got out and that someone died in his place.”

“I’m skeptical,” said Ori. “Doesn’t feel right.”

“Ren wanted to know how good of a look we got at the body because he and the Padrino are hopeful the rumors are true.  I can’t imagine he’d ask us such a thing if they didn’t have some reason for it… rumors on the street alone seem a silly reason to reach out to us, especially about someone we clearly cared for.  I just…” Tara sighed.

“Rumors on the street alone would totally justify it, considering how much money Bacchus had. I… I don’t remember. I looked at the body quick, assumed it was him, and focused on getting us out. I’m not confident at all in my read at the moment. But the whole 24 hours leading up to it… it just kind of felt like he was saying goodbye. Or would it feel the same way if he was going to run?” Ori frowned.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

Tara shook her head, “Of course.  I just… what with Dad having been dead and my mom, she wept over his body… another man’s body.  She should have known him better than anyone. And Nona Bella… she had a similar experience with the man she was engaged to before Grandpa Gavin.  I mean, I know it’s crazy. We saw what we saw, but it's just… I had this dream in Italy and… you what, never mind. You’re right. It’s just wishful thinking.  Forget I said anything. I was right to tell Ren that I didn’t he was alive.”

“I dunno. Wouldn’t he have reached out to us?” Ori paused. “Maybe not, actually.”

Tara began walking toward the bed slowly, “I think that the sadness of goodbye was one hell of an emotion to ride out and that even if he did have a back up plan to get out, he wouldn’t have given up the chance to experience our emotional goodbye for anything.  The man’s ego was only matched by the size of his… stamina.” She smirked and began undoing her buttons.

Ori glanced up at Tara with a look of hunger- one that was quickly replaced by a sigh and a small shake of the head. “The professor out there would hear us, and while he may or may not approve, it’s better to keep him in the dark. Also, I want to be alert in case that black sedan comes by- and you have a way of distracting me…”

Tara didn’t argue with her, she simply dropped her garment to the floor and kept staring at Oriana, stalking towards the bed with a very determined look in her eyes.

“Tara…”

Tara reached back and unfastened her bra, letting it fall to the floor just a few steps before the bed.  Still she said nothing, a smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

“This is because you were thinking about us and Bacchus. You know that would make him happy, regardless of where he is at the moment.”

“Wrong.”  She said sliding out of her underwear.  “This is not because of Bacchus. This is because I couldn’t figure out what the hell I was going to do about that man who is in my apartment tonight.  If he hadn’t figured it out from all the touches and glances, and my refraining from opening doors and pulling chairs, he certainly has questions knowing we retired to a single bedroom with only one bed and neither of us even attempted to discuss sleeping accommodations.  The man is an academic, he’s not dead. He damn well knows you’re not a mook or personal bodyguard if I didn’t have some accommodations set up for you here and if we didn’t feel the need to discuss sleeping arrangements. We just took it on faith that we knew where one another was going,”  Tara climbed onto the bed and crawled towards Ori.

“Tara... “ Ori didn’t move away, but she tilted her head, knowing that Tara was prepared to ignore whatever she’d say. “Listen to me… we’re on a mission right now. And that guy in there wants to fuck both of us. We can use that. We can potentially use that for millions of dollars to get you your club. I think you’re being a bit paranoid, too. Of course, we’re staying together; we’re hiding out in a way we didn’t plan to. This is normal. People hiding out have ‘strange bedfellows’ all the time. We shouldn’t trade a potential advantage away like this…”

Tara stopped just shy of touching Ori with her naked body.  She stared down at her lover and then dipped her head close to Ori’s, whispering in her ear, “You’re much more cunning than you like to say that you are… tactical.  Strategic. It’s rather sexy. Yes, I want… the money… and advantage is, so,” She took Ori’s ear lobe in her teeth and gave a gentle tug before releasing it. Ori closed her eyes, but didn’t move. “Important.  I suppose I could go dig out something … hideous from my dresser for the duration of our mission, but I think you should be aware…”

Tara lashed her tongue on Ori’s neck.  “I sincerely thought about making you scream tonight for the kicks of watching him at breakfast tomorrow.”

Tara chuckled as she pulled away slowly, retreating to her dresser to find the most modest pair of bedclothes she could find. When she returned, she’d never seen Oriana more pissed at herself.

Tara woke up alone and soon discovered that Oriana had spent the night on the couch, dragging out an extra sheet and a couple of pillows sometime after Tara had fallen asleep. Tara hadn’t said anything when she’d woken up; Chambers had already been out in the living room, drinking coffee and reading the book that had been recovered from his apartment. Oriana had slipped off to shower, and Tara found herself making breakfast and dialing one of her best friends.

“Good morning, beautiful.”  Tara said into the phone, leaning against the kitchen counter as she watched the bacon starting to warm in the pan.  “How was Paris?”

“Amazing. About three thousand times more fun than being a nun. I don’t think I’ve ever been so pampered in my life. Got some stories to tell you next time you’re good and drunk…”

“Bah.  I don’t have to be drunk for girl talk.  I’m always happy to share the details of my excitement with you - believe me, I’d love to hear all about your vaccation.”

“Maybe Drunk Tara is more amusing to me.” Tara could hear Jo’s smirk through the phone.

“Maybe you should put yourself in a position to see her more often, say by going on another adventure with me.”

“Maybe you should tell me what position- what? Sure! Where are we going? Italy again?”

“You ever been to South America?”  she chuckled.

“Like Texas?”

“No.  Like Brazil or Peru.”

“... not even close. What are you going to be doing down there?”

“You mean besides investigating the theories about the virility of the men down there?”  She chuckled, knowing that Jo would understand that was an odd statement out of Tara and she might pick up on the idea that she was in mixed company and would not discuss certain things openly.

Chambers seemed to overhear the remark, judging by his glance that he tried to cover up.

“I can’t discuss it over the phone, but I will say that it’s likely to be hard, deadly, and incredibly profitable.  You’re going to hate me for it, of course, but I promise you’ll come back with lots of new stories to share while drinking with handsome men.”

“Why would I hate you for it?”

“Ah… so you don’t know what the … well, let’s just say we’ll be roughing it.  This is a trip into the wilds. The dangers should be less of the sorts we dealt with in Italy and more … cuts and bruises and rashes from God alone knows what plants.”

“Shit.” Jo paused. “And Tara, you know you’re a good friend, so I hate to ask. But Paris was really expensive. I’ll be getting paid, right? Like the Italy job?”

Tara laughed, “Up front.  You’re one of the few folks I would offer that to - we’ll give you a flat rate and a cut of the end profits.  We’ll discuss percentage in person. However, I think we should be able to come to terms on a flat number that you’d find agreeable to serve as a medical professional on a jungle expedition?  I might even be convinced to throw in another celebratory vacation for recuperation after we’re done, maybe in Rio de Janeiro?”

“I’m in. Who else is on the team?”

“You were my first call, of course Oriana is coming along.  I’ll be there. We also have a scholar in tow. More on that later.  I need a few others, also a local or two since Oriana and I aren’t really strong in speaking Spanish, especially local dialects.  I’m sure the team will come together over the next day or so.” she flipped the bacon.

“It’s too bad about Crupi and Laurent. I miss those guys- wish they were here just because we were friends. But they could have come in handy here.”

“I’m calling Ren next, by the way.  Thought you should known. He’s moved up in the world since you last saw him.”

“Ha! Good luck getting him away from the Padrino’s backside.”

“I’m not asking for Ren.  Rex might need to get out of the country for a bit so I’m going to offer to give him something else to be doing while he’s away - a chance to make some money for the Padrino and stay useful.  I don’t know that he’ll take me up on it - he’s a big wig now, but depending on the sort of trouble he’s gotten into, our mission might be just what he’s looking for.”

“He’s certainly good in a fight. Anyone else on your radar? Local people in Philly?”

“I don’t know.  The list I have is pretty short right now.  I got a few more calls to make, we’ll see what rabbits I’m able to pull out of my hat.  Don’t hold your breath though. Might be we’re making new friends along the way on this one.  I have a few numbers I can call, contacts of my parents. One or two that might still be living and able bodied of my grandparents’s old connections if you can believe it.  They worked with people who were younger than them, Grandma employed a lot of younger people, gave them their start out of her employment agency. Some of them are the best in their field now… many of them though, most, are dead.  Problem is, until I reach out, I don’t know who is alive and who is gone.”

“Well, you can count on me. I’ll get my supplies together. Leaving soon, I assume?”

“As soon as we can.  I need to get a team together and do a lot of shopping.  This little venture is going to cause me to tap into the family trust; if that gives you any indication of how much I’m betting this might net us.  Needless to say, this one is big Jo. This one could make you comfortable for a long while, if we’re right and if we survive it. I’ll let you go for now, but I’ll call again soon.  Take care, hon.”

“Talk to you soon.”

Ori emerged from the bathroom, already dressed, and leaned on the kitchen counter. “Good morning, boss.”

Tara quirked an eyebrow and quickly tried to hide her surprise at being called ‘boss.’

“I figured I can ask around, and get some leads on trustworthy locals in Peru. My previous fieldwork was mostly limited to Europe, as you know, but I have some people with good info who I can call- they might be able to offer some recommendations.”

“That…”  Tara realized the bacon was starting to burn and quickly pulled it off the heat.  “That sounds good. It’s a place to start. Jo’s in, by the way. As expected. Apparently she really went through her funds in Paris, again, not a surprise.  I have a few other calls I’m going to make, see if I can’t get us a few more hands to fill up the roster.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Hungry?” Tara asked offering some of the bacon and toast to Oriana.  “Professor? Are you hungry? I’m happy to throw in some eggs too. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day they say.”

“Quite!” said Chambers. Oriana winked at Tara and took her seat at the table.

Tara quickly scrambled up some eggs in the leftover bacon grease and then brought the toast, eggs, and bacon to the table for everyone to dig into.  “I hope you slept well, Professor?”

“Very well, thank you. Do you think it would be possible to return and recover some of my personal effects? Or would it be better to simply write them off as lost and purchase some new clothes?”

“We can check to see if your place is still being watched.  It’s entirely possible that the people who were there now realize you picked up your needed items and have gone to ground.  Most people would not assume you’d go back for things like clothing and such. If nothing else it’s possible I can send someone by your place to collect some items.  What do you think, Oriana?”

“Don’t think it’d be much of a risk. I can go with him and keep him company while you set things up, if you’d like.”

“Sounds like a plan.”  She picked up a strip of bacon.  “We’ll want to make sure your information is put somewhere safe though.  Just in case those folks are still hanging around your home. You don’t want to bring it back there with you.  I have a safe here we can lock it in, if you like and I don’t have plans to be going out today. Mostly a lot of phone calls and probably a lot of those getting no one on the other end.  A lot of my contacts have relocated to new cities or graveyards, this is the first time I’ve had to dig out my connections in a few months. May take a bit of footwork but we’ll get a good team together.  Trust in that.”

“Ah. Well, that seems wise,” said the professor, although he’d hesitated for a moment. Then he nodded. “Of course, yes.”

“Well, seems like we have our plan for the day then.  Oriana, if you like you might swing by your place and pick up a few things too.  If you’re going to be here looking after my personal protection there’s no need for you to go without your creature comforts.  At least a pillow of your own, I know how dreadful my couch is.”

Ori nodded. “Good thinking. Took me a long time to fall asleep last night.”

“That’s a shame.  I slept like a baby.  Definitely want to bring some things back with you then.”  Tara waited for a moment when the professor was looking down at his plate before she gave a wink to Ori, poking back at her.

After breakfast, when Oriana and Chambers had left, Tara picked up the phone again.  This time she was calling Italy. This time she was calling, Renato. Of course, it wasn’t a straightforward affair.  Ren was a busy man. After a bit of back and forth with what was clearly a secretary of sorts, or a lover by the way the woman spoke about Ren - maybe both, Tara finally got a time later in the day when she could call and expect a ‘brief’ discussion with him.  Tara presumed the woman was likely encouraged to be difficult, it made Ren appear important after all. Still, she played the game and politely agreed to call back at the appointed time.

When she finally got him on the phone, Tara’s voice was warm and bright, “You have no idea how nice it is to hear your voice today. I’m sorry I didn’t just mail you back but after I got your letter some business came up and I thought it best to just call.  You’ll get a note too, but this is sort of time-sensitive. Before all that though… how are you?”

“Of course,” said Ren. “And I’m sorry about Annnetta. She’s supposed to be more direct if a VIP calls.”

“You’re kind, Ren, but I think the days of me being a VIP are a long way off yet or far behind me depending on what way you look at it.  These days your position affords a bit more space between us - I didn’t expect you’d answer straight off. It’s fine, really. I promise.”

“Well, my VIP list mostly means my friends. And actual VIPs,” laughed Ren. “So what’s up? Everything okay?”

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

“Yeah, everything is good,” said Tara.  “Actually there’s a pretty big opportunity that just landed on my desk and I’m jump at it.  The payday should be… very good. Very generous. Bigger than anything I’ve seen. Which, is why I’m calling.  See, I’m putting together a team. I want people I know, people who’s skills I am familiar with and most of all, people I trust to have my back in a place where we’re outsiders.  And, since your letter seemed to indicate that Rex might need some time out of the heat, well - I thought I’d offer. At least if he’s running around with me then he might make the Padrino a very big profit instead of sitting on his hands somewhere gathering dust.”

“I can’t deny that it’d be good to get him out of the spotlight for a bit,” said Ren. “He’s been attracting a lot of attention lately. You know how he is… not exactly subtle.”

Tara chuckled, “No.  He’s not. I think that’s what Brigitte likes best about him.”  Her chuckle died though as she realized his opening sounded distinctly like there was about to be a very big ‘but’ inserted.

“Want me to- wait a minute.” Ren seemed to leave the line for a minute before returning. “He’s here, actually. Want to talk to him yourself?”

“Ren… before you put him on, I just got to ask - I’m not gonna get him into any trouble by asking him to come along, am I?  I mean… if the Padrino needs him, if he’d lose footing in Italy by stepping away, I don’t want to be the cause of trouble for him at home.  Just…”

“Tara, don’t say another word. Your instincts are excellent, and there’s nothing for you to worry about.”

Tara smiled, “Okay, put him on.  God help me…”

Twenty seconds later, a baritone voice boomed out in Italian. “Ciao bello.

Sei curioso?”  Tara held her breath wondering how he might respond.

Mortale."  Tara didn’t say the last part like it was a warning, but like it was a reason to be excited. Rex thought of danger in the way Bacchus thought about sex - it was something to be sought after and often, and with great vigor.

"Allettante. Molto allettante. Ma non mi importa di una giungla. Verrò in America per visitarti, stare nella tua città, prendermi cura di te e di tua sorella. Ma la giungla? Inferno no. Non è il mio genere di avventura.” He paused. “Inoltre, stanno accadendo molte cose a Roma.

He paused. “E me stesso." Then he laughed, promising to fly over quickly and hung up the phone. A minute later, Ren called her back.

“Well,” said Ren. “Seems like that was a win-win.”

Tara sighed.  “I still lack people for my team, but I’ll figure it out.  At least Brigitte will have some good company and it will do her some good I think.  Rex will, no doubt, be surprised by the woman he finds waiting for him.”

“Sorry I can’t drop everything and come along with you. But I’ve got about twelve crises and it’s not even dinner yet.”

“You’d be about as good in a jungle as Rex, maybe less so.  Your strengths lay with people and information. Besides, you’re work is very important there.”

“Thanks, Tara. Let me know if there’s anything else I could do… do you have enough cash to fund things? I- we, the organization- could put some up front for a percentage of any profit.”

Tara chuckled, “Ah!  There’s the Padrino’s right hand at work.  Very impressive. You said that almost like my friend.”  Tara’s voice was full of mirth and no bitterness. “I think we’re funded well, but rest assured, if Rex finds himself in an agreeable match with my sister, we’ll celebrate in the old way.  The Padrino’s house will receive a gift from my family. To be sure. A cut from my treasure. So, encourage Rex to think about trying to offer Brigitte a more stable life than that of a hitman for hire, would you?  She’s on a dark path, Ren. She needs more help than I can give her, especially since I’m neck deep in it myself.”

“Okay... well, now I’m worried, too. You’re sure Rex will be helpful calming her down? I would have thought he’d have the opposite effect.”

“She’ll be okay.  While I’m away, she'll at least focus on the kids.  She’s a good big sister, very protective. Since I’ll be putting my ass on the line, rest assured she won’t be pulling any of her antics.  At least not until she’s sure I’m okay. As for Rex, weirdly enough, I think he’s just what she needs… part of how she was working through her shit in New York, before my parents … well, you know.  She joined an underground fighting ring. She’s one hell of a fighter. Rex might help her burn off some of that energy, in and out of the bedroom I’m sure.”

“... you’re deliberately trying to hurt me, Tara Mastrosimone. Now I need to go make a bunch of phone calls…” he laughed. “Alright. He’ll be there tomorrow. Need to run now.”

“Take care, Ren.  I miss you. And, by the way, once I open my club… I expect a visit.  I’ll be hurt if you don’t come to partake in the pleasures I have to offer you.”

“Of course.”

With that Tara hung up, no closer to a complete team but hopeful she’d done something to help her sister at the very least.  Brigitte would not like to think of her meddling in her life like this, but Tara had thought it once in the last twenty-four hours already:  when it came to her family, there was nothing she would not do.

Chapter 3: Southwesterly

The plane ride had been quiet. Tara had read through three books, two on the flora and fauna of the rainforest and one on the Incan Empire. Oriana had mostly slept, curling up with her legs under her. Jo split her time between talking with Tara, talking with Oriana, and getting to know Chambers.

The professor seemed to enjoy being surrounded by three beautiful women, but he was obviously skeptical about the “team” as it currently stood. He’d made a single comment about wishing they had ‘more intimidating’ people along with them, but hadn’t brought it up again since.

They landed Tara’s personal plane in a newly American-built airfield in Panama and took a smaller plane to Peru. They landed in Mancora, a resort town in the northwest of the country. The white sand beaches were spotted with small huts and thatched shade, and the ocean seemed different than she’d ever seen it before, as the cerulean waves seemed to stretch infinitely to the western horizon. It was a paradise of a beach, and the golden sun warmed the air as noon approached. There were dozens of cabanas dotting the seaside, as well as a few resort hotels, one of which was the address they had for Alejandro Vega, their highest recommended translator and local contact.

Ori looked out at the beach with a raised eyebrow. “You know, I was going to complain that this was too much of a detour for us, but…”

“Funny how a beautiful beach changes your perspective, huh?”  Tara smirked, looking at the environment with a sense of wonder. “It’s not at all what I expected to find here, to be honest.”

“Here in Mancora? Or in Peru?” asked Chambers.

“In Peru, I suppose.  I mean, it’s rather small-minded of me to admit, but some part of my head was all wrapped up in where we’re going.”

“This is hardly indicative of the country as a whole, I assume,” said Chambers.

“Of course there are biologically diverse locations in the country - I guess I just focused a bit too much on the jungles.”

“How long are we going to be here?” asked Jo.

“Are you’re asking do we have time to let our hair down for a few hours?”  Tara arched an eyebrow.

“Days,” smirked Jo. “But I’ll take what I can get.”

“Figure you can let your hair down without fear tonight, and possibly again tomorrow depending on how well things go with our meeting.”

“Definitely tomorrow,” said Ori. “We’re about to march into the jungle for God knows how long. Stretching out on the beach sounds like just what the doctor ordered- or the nurse, in this case.”

Tara took a deep breath.  “Two days then. We leave on the third.  I don’t want to dilly dally too long, who knows if anyone else has the same information we do.  Clearly someone has an idea this place is out there and I don’t want to invite trouble. We let our hair down for a few days, we pick up a translator and then we’re on our way.”

Chambers nodded. “Sounds like a fine plan to me. It will give me more time to study Dr. Martin’s research.”

“If you think you need more time at the end of that, you’ll let us know, yes Professor?”  Tara didn’t want to rush the man. His knowledge would be life or death in the jungle.

“Of course. But I expect that some of the information will have to be decoded along the way. We have a map, annotated with advice and information from Dr. Martin. We do not, however, have a starting point beyond a vague geographical area- but that’s a discussion for another day.”

“Fair enough.”

“Makes sense to stay in the same resort that Vega seems to be based out of?” asked Ori, glancing to Tara.

“I agree.  Can’t imagine he’s sitting around on his hands, so maybe we should find something to do during the day.  Try to catch him around dinner time, before he goes out and starts any evening frivolity. In the meantime, we could let the professor get some reading in while we three do some shopping and check out that beach?”  Tara smirked imagining Oriana in a bathing suit in the noonday sun.

“Look at the signs,” said Jo, pointing to the directions in Spanish, English, French, Italian, and German, as well as a couple others. “Must be a ton of international guests. Probably lots of fancy shopping.”

“Well then, I bet we can find more than a few ways to pass the afternoon.  Enjoy a good meal, take in the sights, pick up a few trinkets to remember our trip by.”  Tara smiled at Jo. “My treat, of course. What do you say, Ori, up for a little retail therapy in preparation for our jungle trek?”

“Sure,” said Ori. Her grey eyes shone for a moment as she looked at Tara before looking away.
