SamAdams, being SamAdams, loved beer. He loved it so much that he made it, since he didn't have enough money to buy his own. Why did he not have the money, you ask? Well, perhaps he did have it, but he needed it for other things. Anyway, since Sam has so much beer on his hands, he thought he'd rent out a room and give it out--free--to whoever showed up. As many people and as much as they want! 

Sam is also hoping, of course, that everyone gets drunk and does stupid things and spills each others' secrets and affairs. Sam is always interested in such things, the more he knows the better off he is. Plus, being SamAdams, he likes to rabble rouse. If he's lucky, someone will get shot and provide a good base for another massacre exaggeration. Maybe everyone can even dump tea into the local harbor, if they get really drunk.

"So come one, come all!" shouts Sam. "Come drink and be merry. Let the drink and insults flow freely."

James didn’t have any gripes with anyone, at least not any that he knew about but the sound of a beer giveaway certainly intrigued him. Not only did he enjoy the stuff himself he was always on the lookout for different types and styles to bring back home and put on the taps of his pub. This seemed like a decent enough place to try some new flavors and maybe make a business deal or two along the way.
