A man rides into the city square on his prized Mustang

Everyone in this world is talking about what it takes to be a CL, hitter, orator, and other things while I ask what does it take just to be a contributing member to a family? What do you think the standards should be? This is just for what the average Joe should be held up to and what they should do. I am just feeling as of late that the grunt is underapreciated. They have much more value than just some other guy.

Personally the grunt of the family is the most important part of a family. It is the backbone for profit, success, and to the leaders well being. Donations as well aren't everything but it is something that everyone tries their best to do. Money does not make the world go round because blood does a hell of better job. Who takes out the enemy Crew Leader's bodyguards? The grunts! Then the hitters step in to take a much easier shot. Sure the leaders are what govern this thing of ours but the people opinions matter greatly. Look at the recent awards which I think shows some more importance to the average Joes of the world.

Most of the businesses are not held by the major people of this world but by the grunt. Most of the "RP"(kind of OOC) comes from the grunts. They are people just trying to make a living in the Cosa Nostra. The little people matter most and make up this huge thing of ours. As well every CL and great speaker was once no more than a family grunt.

It's a wonder really, how so many people working within the mob never make it past the lower ranks.

How many go unknown? Great earners, advisors and efficient cotributing members of family are never heard of because they don't have a position noticed by others?

Genco scratches his head, thinking for a second

Yes, it is a wonder.
Report Post Tip
Most of the time people don't hear of them because they are never speaking much. They are never in the coffee shops and if they are then they are extremely quiet. Most people though do have the potential to be great leaders or RHMs. They could become very well trusted and become made men as well.
Report Post Tip
I for one can claim to be one of those quiet types that are hardly heard in the streets. But what does it take be a successful member of this thing of ours it is simple. One must but his Family before anything else and be willing to lay his or her life down for the Family no matter what the reason is. Plus you must be active in the Family and be a good earner and not gamble all your hard earned money away at the BJ tables. But last but not least be respectful to the members in this things of ours and espically MadeMen and above for they have proven themsleves to understand theys things that make are way of life so special but also so hard for some to understand.

I would put it down to the simple dynamics of society if I'm perfectly honest.

Why is it that in the schoolyard, the biggest asshole always seems to be well known as the best fighter/ ball player/ whatever else he is supposed to be good at when he isn't all that good at it?

Most people are reluctant to put themselves on a pedestal. Which gives an advantage to those who don't have a problem with it. As far as the Mafia goes, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of Bosses who caught lucky breaks in order to get to the top, or alternatively were shameless self-publicists. But if getting to the top is a challenge, staying there is an equally tough one.

Reputation, even if untrue, is everything in business.

The little guy who makes up numbers still has to earn his reputation in someway or another. Look at the people you know presently or in the past. All you know of them is their reputation, for one reason or another. This reputation is what put them where they are and even the smallest and most timid guy in the family can aspire to be in the same position and succeed.

Michael listens to the conversation taking place as he nods his head. After the last person speaks, he raises his face and looks around at the people who are present.

I haven't been around for very long, you know.. I just joined up with a family recently. As a youngster out here, I would have to say that you just need to say somethin', I mean.. uhh.. anything really. Our crew leaders seem to like it when we come out here with some sort of uhh.. opinion on a subject. I, myself, am trying to fight through the uhh.. nervousness and such of speaking in the public eye, but at some point you just gotta come out and speak your mind, you know. I mean, it doesn't have to be anything special or anything that will change the way a person thinks... but just comin' out here and speakin' about somethin' seems to have some kinda uhh.. effect on yourself. Once you do it a little bit, you can start comin' out here more and.. you know.. feel a little more comfortable with yourself. I mean.. it's a good practice to just do it... even if you don't think you're uhh.. contributing much to the community.

Michael takes another gaze around at anyone standing by.

I mean, seriously.. come out here and state your mind and opinions... or even ideas. I don't wanna be the only youngin' out here talkin' with these big name guys, you know... and especially when it could be some kinda subject that I don't yet understand. I guess it's just part of the learnin' process and gainin' confidence in what you do.

I was greatly disappointed to learn that your speech, with its tantalizing title, had nothing to do with midgets.

But on the topic at hand, what does it take to be a regular, everyday member of a family? Simple, really. Don't be a dumbass and break my rules, and at least check in to see what is up every once in a while. That's the bare minimum, right there.

Of course, if you want to advance in this life, you need to do a ton more. But that kind of effort will get you the shiny little award of "Not HQ'd."

As for going above and beyond, I can't give you a specific formula. Everyone has their own unique talents to offer. Play to your strengths, and you will look more valuable than you actually are.

Walking down the street Johnny notices a crowd organizing.

Spider put it rather simple really. Donations are not a requirement but much appreciated by a CL. Also to be able to hit a CL's bodyguards it does take some kills. Not a lot but some. Everyone is a hitter or has the Potential.

Every CL was once a grunt as stated, but they too have voiced in the streets and have gone unheard.

Yes it is true many fine earners have gone unnoticed but many have. My bloodline is well known for being heard and very straight forward with their feelings. It's brought shame and respect. Being a grunt though usually isn't what many want.

Most people want to become a CL or Rhm. Coffee shops help greatly. It is one of the best ways to be known in this world. But coming to the streets helps very greatly.

To become a great mafioso can be difficult and easy. Respect, loyalty, and omerta. Three things no mafioso should ever forget. Some do at times and then their is a great deal of time to pardon their bloodline of that.

A young Italian man walked down the street looking for a place to buy cigars. He stopped to listen to a few people talk on the street.

Mr. Torres, you were correct when you said most of the talk about the best people in this thing of ours is about leaders, hitters and speakers, but it depends on who you ask. My grandmother told me stories her grandmother told her about your bloodline being good business men. Similar to you your ancestors owned businesses in nearly every city the mafia controls. Most of the people I've been told about are business owners and story tellers. They might not take up a lot of pages in the history books, but they impress me.

Although some of the middle men might not feel as appreciated as other people I think it's an illusion the grass is greener for leaders and other well known people. It might seem like a glamorous movie star life, but it's not. They live everyday under a microscope. They are judged and criticized if they do nothing. When they do something they are also criticized. They are responsible for the lives of their members. If they die most likely every member of their family will die too. I don't know about you, but I think being a good earner, kicking up some donations and following the rules sounds like an easier gig than being responsible for the lives of fifty people.

Santino stopped talking and looked down the street.

Do you know where I can buy cigars? Hmmm while I'm shopping maybe I should buy a pin stripe suit too.

Mathilda notices a group of people talking and decides to listen in. She feels a bit hesitant, what with only being a lowly gangster but she feels she has something to add to the conversation.

"Being a good member of a Family? Well I think that depends on how you define 'good'. What the bar for 'good', 'great', poor, or as Mr Pig put it, 'not-HQ'd' actually is. Also it depends on who is judging your performance. Is it the boss? Yourself? Other members of the Family?

"I think every one of us has different skills - aspects of this thing of ours we are better at than others. You do get your all-rounders, but most of us pick an area or two to work in and stick to it. So you will have your business owners, your hitters, your 'breakers', your earners. And then maybe you can start to look at what makes you 'good' in that area. By specialising, it's a lot easier to figure out how 'good' you actually are.

Mathilda pauses and shuffles her feet a little.

"But I think specialisation comes later on in life, once you've grasped how to walk this particular path. Mr Torres refers to people without a particular role as the 'grunts'. These are the people on the lower ranks. And I suppose to be a good 'grunt' is activity within the family. I think it's working hard for your Boss by making money and kicking some of that up, and your attitude about it. These lower ranks are really just laying the foundation for your career in this world. The time building up to what you decide you'd like to accomplish.

"Joey Bones said earlier that being a good member is about putting the Family first. I think he's right there on all counts. I don't think it matters what role you have in the family, even if you're right at the bottom as a gangster or thug, putting the family first and working hard is what makes you a good member without a doubt."

Smiles at the young mafioso and sets his newspaper on the newspaper stand

You know.. some people recognize the work of the 'grunts' as you say, and some people dont. It takes a little extra step, a little extra work to run one of the establishments in the Bar's but its worth it.

What do we all have? We have family..friends..and work. Business is Business and if your not supporting your local business's, you are no better than the scum you are selling your goods too! Take care of your friends, your family and your neighbors - for they are all we have other than our pride and dignity and pistola.

Keep up the good work local business owners
