Chris was sitting outside at one of the local bistro’s in Jersey eating a sandwich and drinking orange juice with a little gin talking with Phil DiMeo the DeMeo family wanted in on the loan sharking and gambling out west. They wanted to be seen as a real family with connections and power. Chris looked at Phil with an raised eyebrow. Then Chris asked why was he talking with him and not Lucky or Frank? Chris then told him his best bet was to form a partnership with Meyer or Abner. Then Chris told him that he could partner with the Philly mob. Phil leaned back in his chair and then leaned forward and told Chris that the reason they came to him was that he had those connections already and he was easier to talk with. Chris nodded and then looked at his watch as he told Phil that was a big ask.
Chris leaned forward and told Phil that Vincenzo Troia was conspiring to take over the Newark family and needed to be removed or he would wait to talk with Troia. Phil was surprised that Chris knew more about the inner workings of the Newark New Jersey family then he did as the underboss. Chris looked over at Whispers and Peanut and gave them a nod and they stood up quickly and then with a wave of Whispers hand the car pulled up with Abe driving. A second car pulled up with Recco driving with Mickey in the front and Sticks in the back. Phil stood and shook hands with Chris and nodded to Darious his bodyguard. Phil ensured Chris that they would deal with Troia quickly. Chris nodded and told him that Profaci is watching them closely. And when Don Profaci get’s an idea he stays with that concept until the opportunity presents itself.
Chris was driven to south philly where he checked into his hotel and in the lobby was his second meeting for the day with Sal Sabella boss of the Philly Crime Family. Chris and Sal walked into the hotel restaurant and were seated immediately. Chris knew then that Sabella did not keep a low profile or he eats here all the time. They ordered their meal and as they ate Sal asked Chris for his help. Sal wanted a couple of members of his removed. Chris looked at him confused and asked why when the man was part of the family no one interferes when it’s an internal matter. Sal explained that these kids have many friends with the family and outside of the family. Sal told him Lanzetti a capo in his organization is becoming a rival. The mobster Leo Lanzetti wants to be boss and if someone outside the family does it then he could stop a civil war.
Sal then told Chris about the other two rebellious members of the Philadelphia organization, Vincent Cocozza and Joseph Zanghi, Sal promised Chris that all his rackets in the state would be protected and he would get a 15 percent of the gambling rackets under them and he would wave the tax of the rackets that Chris operated in Philly. Chris told Sal that he would give him an answer in the morning. They finished their meals as Sal kept pressing Chris in which direction he was leaning towards. Chris smiled and asked Sal who dropped his name. That's when Sal smiled and told him Frank and Vito. Chris nodded and excused himself to make a call. The call went to Meyer’s who was with Lucky and they informed him that they would ensure that he doesn’t catch any of the blowback from Maranzano or Masseria.
Chris wasn’t comfortable with this arrangement but he agreed wondering why everyone wanted him to do them such favors. Three days later Vincent Cocozza and Joseph Zanghi were shot and killed on a Philadelphia street corner. The hit was simple the two dead men were coming from a local club where gambling and prositution was the highlight of their night. The two drank heavily that night and as they walked home Abe and Mickey stepped out from the shadows and opened up with thompsons and then took off running to a waiting car and peeled off. Then Whispers and Stacks walked over to the two men to ensure that the two were indeed dead. They stood there until the policy came however no one said a word. The cop’s even questioned Whispers and Sticks who gave them nothing more then they checked on the two shot men.
Lanzetti Chris did with Joe. Lanzetti was invited to a nightclub that was owned by John Avena the underboss. Avena had several members of the family there for a reason. Lanzetti never arrived and the members that were there gave testimony that Lanzetti never came. It was because of them that the family didn’t have a civil war. Lanzetti was never found and the last person that saw him was his girlfriend and she said he was going home to his wife to change clothes. Chris met with Sal a week later and handed Sal a ring which he recognized as Lanzetti's favorite ring. Sal kept his promise and Meyer’s and Lucky were happy because they had Chris managing their gambling rackets and now the tax was waved putting that 10 percent into their pockets every week. |
