Honesty walked to the Slam Poetry for Poetic People to share his piece of art with the world. He sat down on a stool in a dimly lit room. In fact, the only lights on in the place was at the bar which was in the back of the building and a small spotlight illuminating the stage. On the stage was a single microphone and a stand. He took a swig of maple syrup. What was one swig became 17 and it was finally his turn to come up on stage. Clapping isn't allowed. Only finger snapping. Honesty walked up to the mic.

"Hello everyone. Today, I wrote a poem about someone special. She is a gift to me. That woolen sweater type of gift where you never have asked for one, but still warms your heart even if you wear it every month or so. On the days we laugh, this sweater becomes a my maple syrup. On the days that she is delusional and sides with GrimReaper, she becomes more like a pair of badly knitted socks."

Furlan

Oh Furlan.

Like butter churning our love is mixed...

Mixed like GrimReaper taking a math test

Churning stomachs digesting the enzymes of life

Turning to one another. Sometimes for goofs...

Sometimes for gaffs...

Sometimes for laughs...

(Honesty's voice raises really loudly)

LAUGHS

Innocent children laughing grasping for baskets of joy!!

(Calms down)

Grabbing parts of it...

Here is a joke, here is a smile, here is humour.

What is left for the lone child when all the parts of laughter part?

Impart impartial feelings to parting ways even if it's for part of a partial day

(Pause)

An empty basket representing a casket even a gasket cant fit

Chapped lips, but no chap sticks

(Pause)

Pain without remedy

Rain but no comedy...

A sadness for this sad miss

Miss her does this mister

And reunited these two remember

Like an old man cured of Alzheimer's

Of all the good times and yonder

These two reminisce of child hopes and wonders...

(The tempo picks up and the tone of voice too. Sounds a bit thunderous.)

Then GrimReaper shoves himself in the conversation

Relaxation on probation

She falls for his spell like a tumble in a witching well

A fumble of a twitching male...

(Honesty grows quieter... Almost whispering)

She sides with GrimReaper and it's anarchy...

She forgets about Honesty and his pleasantries...

The cycle starts anew

Two non-lovers quarrel...

Boohoo.

The whole crowd gives a standing snapping ovation at this masterpiece and Honesty takes out a bottle of maple syrup from his coat pocket and takes one final swig... chug

Well this was awkward.

Blinking rapidly, I grab a shot glass from the bar and toss the contents back. It takes a minute, because it's cold, oozing maple syrup that I thought I had banned from the city. Since the dissolution of my container crew, however, that rule had faded into the growing LA smog we'd all seen beginning to compound above the city. I can't even ask for another type of drink, my throat is almost sealed shut, so I wave my hands at the nearest bottle of rotgut, and keep on waving them, until the bartender fills a low-ball glass and I can strip the syrup in my gullet like so much paint thinner. Smoothing my hair down, I clear my throat repeatedly and walk to the stage, giving Honesty a glare as I pass. He's making me think, I don't like doing that so much.

"Hello." I say quietly into the microphone. There's a screeching sound and a couple of boos.

"Hey, I'm up here trying. Fuck you."

The room goes even quieter, and I clear my throat again.

"I'm the fuckin' Smokeshow, head to toe,

Throwing you the credits, don'tcha know,

Killin' us some Durdens to and fro,

Hit me up for Mappin' if ya low."

There's weird snapping noises coming from the audience, I can't see them because of the backlight, but it seems encouraging enough so I continue.

"Honesty is trippin' on some blow.

Coke will kill ya braincells, Little Bro!

I'm riding Grim's jock just like a ho,

You know he's gonna Reap just what he sows!"

More snapping. Okay.

"Bring it to the weekend, Babes and Beaus,

Valentine's and lovin', hearts and bows,

VDay is approaching, friends and foes,

Get your fuckin' wack up, 'cause it shows!"

Dear God this was embarrassing. I run out the back emergency exist before the odd finger-snapping has a chance to start up again.
