The streetlights left the roads and sidewalks cast in a dim orange glow. Darkened shadows where dealers and street rats roamed and creeped through the night. Which is actually why Krayt had been spending the better part of the last two hours laying the beatdown on the street urchins to clear the block up for his boss. This was his corner, his money to make and he didnt need filth hanging about fouling up things. A black car rolled up and the window came down, "Just gimme a bag of the brownstuff." I nodded to the man and reached into my jacket to pull the bag out. I took the money and passed the bag with one quick trade off. The car pulled off and I turned to head to the local speakeasy to get a quick drink and maybe a quick dance. I lit a cigarette for the stroll, it would be a few blocks before I arrived and it was a mostly pretty night in the lit up city. Another cigarette later and he was outside the thick steel doors that protected the stairwell down. He tossed his cigarette to the side and tapped the door with the knuckles of his finger. "Hey, its Krayt. I'm thirsty out here don't leave me hanging out here its cold." I rubbed my hands together and breathed a thick cloud of vapor into them to try to heat them up. The thick doors creaked open with a loud squeal and a big bulky Italian man opened up, he pointed his large meaty thumb down the stairs with a grunt and shut the door behind me. I made my way down and walked into the smoky bar wearing long thick trench coat and a slim black fedora. I had only been here maybe two days and I was sitting on a nice enough chunk that I could walk around cozy on these late winter nights in Detroit. |
