Taps-Man had always wanted to be a Gangster and doing his part for the cause was a primary motivator in everything he did. He was eager to please and always extremely co-operative. The amount of times he volunteered for jobs around the HQ, even those which other people might turn their nose up at, was legendary. They called him 'Taps the Fixer' or 'Super Taps'. He was a pleasure to be around and although a perennial jobber, not quite cutout for a starring role, he was appreciated. A bit like the way one views an old top; not quite nice enough to be seen outside, but comfortable enough to give you comfort around the house. That was Taps-Man. "Taps! I've got a job for you," came the familiar cry. Taps-Man wasn't exactly sure who he was working for anymore because there had been a rather big war recently whilst he was fitting some shelves. "I can do it!" He beamed, looking up to see Farage standing in front of him. 'Huh. I guess I'm in Detroit now,' he thought to himself. "I knew I could count on you Taps. See I have a big favour to ask," Farage said his toothy grin disgustingly wide. "I need you to mind a HQ for me." Taps frowned. This seemed a little bigger than the jobs he was used to doing. Cleaning the toilets was second nature to him, but running his own organisation? That was quite a big step up. "That seems like quite a big step up, Farage." Farage clapped his hand on Taps-Man's back and failed to hide the disgust at the sweaty residue left on his palm. "Quite. I mean obviously you aren't going to actually be doing anything. We'll throw a good underboss at you, a local you understand, of course, and he'll do all the donkey work. Give it a week and boom, you're back scraping crusties off the side of the bowl." That sounded more in line with Taps' skill set. "Ok then, where in Detroit do you need me to go?" Farage barked out a laugh. "Oh no, you aren't Detroit material. We need you in Chicago." |

More container crews. Durdens threatening to overwhelm South Side. Grin scrunched up the note of the increased Durden numbers and tossed it in the bin. His own organisation was fledgling and his control of the city was still tenuous; the books were closed after the war and he didn't have a Made Man he could send to setup operations in South Side. He was in a bind. "Any idea where Elodin is?" Zapata asked, hands twitching at the prospect of lifting his wallet for the 40th time that day. "No clue. Check the alleyway, he likes to eat his lunch by the bins." Zapata nodded and headed off. Before he made it past the threshold, Grin shouted after him. "You able to get a message to anyone in Detroit? Zapata turned around, distaste written across his face. "I know a guy or two our there, yeah. Why?" Grin scrunched his shoulders in the way he did when he was uncomfortable and this whole topic was giving him a bad feeling. "I think we might need to borrow The Fixer." Zapata's eyes went wide. "For South Side?" Grin nodded. "Surely it hasn't come to that?" "I really think it has. We've got 5 containers already. Durdens will have their eye on South Side if we don't act soon and none of our lads are going to be Made for the foreseeable future. It has to be him, I don't see any other way." Grin swallowed hard. "Send a message to Farage, tell him we need to borrow Taps-Man." |

So this was Chicago, eh. Looked like a piece of shit as far as Taps was concerned and he knew shit better than almost anyone. His janitorial skills were second only to his helpfulness among the wide array of talents in the Tap's arsenal, so if anyone was qualified to make that assessment, it would be him. "Taps-Man?" Taps looked around a weedy looking ginger fellow was failing to meet his eye. "You must be, Fidd?" He asked, giving the man an appraising look and discovering that even as low as his expectations were, he was still disappointed. "Yep, that's me!" Fidd said without looking up, holding a wobbly hand out to him. "I'm here to take you to the new setup in South Side." "Grin couldn't make it?" Taps asked, declining to shake the proffered hand, instead strapping his bum bag around his waist. It contained his only other set of clothes, a once-white-now-stained-and-brown vest, and he wasn't going to lose it. "Er, he probably could, I just don't think he wanted to," Fidd answered with a cowardly shrug. "I think he'll be going straight to the new digs." Taps frowned at that, although it wasn't entirely unexpected. He was used to being treated like a deadbeat, because he kinda was. Still, he had a job to do and if he was anything, and he wasn't always, but today, he was a helper. "Ok, no problem. Take me to the new HQ. Do you know who'll be helping me run things?" Fidd looked even more downcast, if that was possible. "I don't know, they don't really tell me much. All I heard was 'Fidd go and pick that sack of shit up and take him to South Side," another sycophantic wince. "Sorry." Taps sighed and got into Fidd's car. Like the man himself, it was far from anything to write home about, which suited him just fine. |

Grin looked at his watch and was as disgusted as normal by any interaction involving Fidd. The man was a continual disappointment and now he was fucking late. "Typical. Fucking typical." Zapata poked his head out of the door of the building they had acquired to serve as Taps-Man's centre of operations. It was a brick-built two storey structure, set beneath a pitched roof, overlaid with concrete tiles and finished with half-round ridge tiles bedded in mortar. The fenestration wasn't ideal, oddly jarring to the eye, and the front elevation was ashlar faced, with common brick behind. Still, it was serviceable and that was exactly what was required. "They're here," he said ducking back inside. Grin took a couple of deep breaths, trying to focus on what clean air smelt like, as he knew Taps was about to come along and stench it up. |

"We're here," Fidd said, pulling up outside a once-grand, now rather tired looking building. A few windows were shuttered and a couple more had been put through at some point previously. There was something a little odd about the way the openings were positions, which just didn't seem to quite fit right, like a dog with too many legs...or too few...or with a horse's dick. Taps wasn't sure, but it definitely wasn't right. "Taps!" Called Grin in a clearly forced attempt at joviality which fell well short of the mark. "Gwin-," Taps said around a mouthful of raw egg which he had wrapped within his bum-bag vest for the journey over. Grin winced. "Here, let me show you in." Grin motioned for Fidd to lead the way with Taps following. They crossed the threshold which opened into a large reception area, currently unmanned. He wasn't entirely sure what they would use that for, but the polished floorboards carried a certain majesty to them and although the certain was cracked, the friezes still helped with the illusion of grandeur. There looked to be a few more reception rooms behind, perhaps he could put a couple of pool tables in one, mattresses in the other. Grin was mumbling something about a fitted kitchen, but Taps had stopped listening. "Yeah, it's a fucking house. I get it. Now, show me to the toilet, that's all I need to see." Grin sighed and pointed to the stairs. "Second door on your right." |

"Are you fucking sure about this?" Hissed Zapata as soon as Taps-Man was out of sight. "He wants to see the toilet? Really?" "Do you think I have any other options?" Grin said, rounding on his number 2, the frustrations of the day and dire nature of the circumstances clearly getting to him. "Do you think this is what I wanted? Shit-licking Taps running a district? Absolutely fucking not, but I've got no choice!" He could faintly hear Taps admiring the porcelain somewhere above him and he tried not to lash out anymore. He reminded himself that this situation was only temporary, a means to an end, until the books were opened and his own people could take over the place. He shuddered to think what damage would be done between now and then though. |

Goldust was a tad annoyed, he'd thought coming to Chicago would be the making of him, hehd given up a promising start with Farage in Detroit and come to assist Grin, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of CoconutRandy, Heir to the Holy Rings of Katmandu (Grin had once admitted to keeping the rings in a dusty cupboard) and 7th of his name here in Chicago... Goldust, sexually ambiguous as he was was determined to discover why Grin was deemed a Daughter of the 5th House, but so far no one could tell him... but as far as he could tell the move had been for nothing, there was no role for him here, nothing for a man of his considerable talents to do, he wasn't even the only one in the crew dressed in Gold, although his stylish gold jumpsuit was so much sexier than that dried up old hag's gold kimono. Things had gone from bad to worse though, Grin had brought that worthless shit stain and drain on the collective average IQ of mafialand to work for him... CamisoleKaka or whatever his name was... and to top it all off, now this... this!!! Taps-man was opening a container crew in the neighbouring borough. Still, at least now they might have clean toilets in Chicago. Mustering as much decorum and panache as he could, he congratulated the toadeous dreg of humanity on his new position.
"Congratulations Taps-man, I'm sure you'll make a fine addition to the ruling elite of Chicago, and should you need any assistance, anything at all, then I'll be happy to give you Sao-'s number." |

Sao- has just got done collecting all of the used plungers in the HQ as Goldust had asked him to. He was told Grin wanted them to decorate his office. Sao- has just got done doing some spring cleaning around the HQ so it wasn’t hard to find all of the plungers in the many, many bathrooms. He always wondered why there were more bathrooms than offices in the HQ but once he witnessed Elodin and his eating habits, he completely understood. At the end of his chore, he noticed the group outside that was showing Taps around Chicago. He left all but one plunger in Grins office and headed outside. He handed the plunger to Taps. “You’re going to need this around here...if you need anything, get my number from Goldust and I’ll be happy to ignore your call.” |

Taps-Man, as the leader of Hawk and Friends, formerly known as The Grin 007 gang, I’d like to welcome you to Chicago. We don’t take kindly to muggers, or those who speak ill of the late, great Destro, but everything else is fair game. I’d invite you over to the office for a nice beverage, but old Grin is a stingy fuck who doesn’t share!! |
