The Palace Theater Started by: Dawn on Jul 14, '20 02:33

Dawn knew that movies provided an escape from the hardships of this depression we were facing, allowing a glimpse into high society life, so far from rural life.  Like herself she knew people were fascinated by the movies themselves and by the glamorous lives of the men and women who starred in the films.    A good laugh eased the mind and brought joy in a time of adversity.

So when Dawn was approached with purchasing the Richmond Theater on 12th Street she jumped at the opportunity, Mr. Richmond the owner had just completed the theater but was in financial trouble.  The Banks knew the value of the property and he was about to default on his loans.  He was looking for someone to keep his employees and honor his contracts for future stage shows.

Dawn meets with her accountants and lawyers and the paper work was drawn up. It was in the best interest of all parties to rename the theatre but Mr. Richmond and all his associates were kept on board and guarantee their jobs as long as they abides by their current 5 year contracts. Dawn renamed it:

Bentley and Big Moe flew in and joined Dawn for the Grand Opening. Advertising went well and there was a very nice turn out.  For the children’s matinee showing of Snow White they had balloons and gave away free hot dogs and popcorn to the children.

For the evening showing they found themselves having hot dogs and popcorn enjoying both movies.

Hell’s Angels is a independent epic aviation war film directed and produced by Howard Hughes, with James Whale directing the dialogue.

Fast and Loose is a romantic comedy film directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and starring Miriam Hopkins, Carole Lombard and Frank Morgan.

Holli had heard about the new movie called 'Fast and Loose' and was excited to see it, but being so busy day and night at the new ice cream shop meant that she had very little time for recreation.

Finally on a very rare occasion, she found herself with a night off and as luck would have it, Shirou was off also. She managed to sweet talk him into taking her to The Palace Theater to see the flick, though he said she owed him one.

They picked their seats in the back row just as the movie was starting. The story-line was about a murder over stolen manuscripts. Both being super competitive with each other, they had a lot of fun trying to solve the case. Of course, Shirou was the winner.

They left the theater laughing. They had really enjoyed themselves and were looking forward to their next night off together.

Report Post Tip

They were back at the Palace Theater the very next evening after Shirou received word from Dawn that there was a mix up with the title and that the wrong film was shown the previous night. Dawn had offered both Holli_Would and himself complimentary passes for the night which they gleefully accepted. The two of them had a lot of fun the other night and Shirou had persuaded Joe to cover for him at the ice cream parlor.

I will get us some popcorn and meet you inside. The seats we had last night were perfect,” he squeezed her hand before letting go. The concession stands had people milling in front of it and it took him a while to get what he wanted. He carried the large tub of popcorn and walked into the movie hall.

The movie was about to start and the lights had dimmed by the time he made it to the back row. Without stepping on anyone’s toes he made it to his seat and as he was about to sit down he spilled some popcorn on Holli. “Sorry,” he muttered, picking up the ones he could find, then he turned to the screen as the movie began.

Ennio enjoyed the entertainment in Detroit.

Fast & Loose, was a clever show. More action scenes would have been nice, something furious and racing, but who would want that. Frank always gets the girls. That guy was quick on his feet.

Popcorn was perfect. Heavy on salt. Solid made paper bag. no one likes when the bag rips with too much butter. And real butter. that's key. Glad he loaded up on more coca cola. Hope there's no real coke in this stuff. I've been hitting it hard today.

Tristan went to the movies with his two nephews Devante and Elijah they both were three they wanted to see a cartoon and Tristan was happy to just relax with the two little guys.   He also had a few body guards around to ensure that he not caught off guard.   The boys had their own small bags of popcorn and they loved it their eyes were so big when he gave them their own bags.  they shared a large drink because he was not about to get u ten times so they could go relieve themselves.  He promised them icecream after they eat their lunch.  Tristan knew that his sister April would have a fit if Elijah ate junk food all day.

Walking into the grand theater, Sana fidgeted with her purse nervously. It was the first big job she was going to do for her family after a string of petty crimes and small drug runs, so it was no surprise that she was extremely jumpy. People filed in and out of the theater with popcorn and drinks in hand, and although she hadn't had dinner at that point, she didn't really have much of an appetite. The nerves were making her have trouble keeping anything down at all.

At the quarter to 9 PM, Sana walked inside the showroom and chose a seat at the very back, which didn't seem to be a popular choice for the movie-goers except for some youngsters who really didn't seem like they were planning on paying any attention to the movie. She set down her purse in her lap gingerly as the cinema started filling up, and yet the seat next to her remained empty. Perhaps the man wasn't going to show up... she thought as the movie started rolling. Relaxing into her seat, she decided to instead just enjoy the film and worry about the consequences after -- she didn't want to find out how her boss was going to react once she breaks the news that the man who promised to buy 2 kilos of Colombian cocaine in cash didn't show up... the same man who Sana was due to give a message to.

About a half hour into the movie, Sana had been thoroughly enjoying the film and was considering getting popcorn when someone slipped into the seat beside her. "I hope this seat isn't taken, doll." The man said with a heavy drawl that Sana couldn't exactly place. Meeting his eyes, she found a young man, probably just in his mid-to-late twenties, with dazzling eyes and a playful smirk. If she didn't know better, she never would have thought he was a junkie and a crook. Flashing him a tight smile, she returned her gaze back to the movie and let him settle down into his seat.

"You know, movie houses are great. It gives you just the right amount of cover to do shady business deals and perhaps even some other things..." She felt his cold hand on his thigh and she immediately dug her fingernails into his skin, causing him to bite his lip to avoid yelling and attracting attention. "Keep your filthy paws to yourself, Trip." Sana growled under her breath, never taking her eyes off of the screen. Trip grimaced as he rubbed his hand, following her gaze to the movie.

"Alright, my bad for assuming you had good taste... alright then, all business. So where's the coke, whore?" Sana gritted her teeth in an attempt to contain her rage before opening her purse and showing him two big bags of the white powder. He reached for it but before he could, she snapped the bag back shut. "No, no, let's do this later, in the alley out back. So we can... test... the quality." Sana purred, crossing her legs as she leaned back into her chair once more. Trip nodded and grinned in response -- he thought he was about to get high with a pretty girl, not knowing the pretty girl had a pretty sharp knife resting against her thigh.

As the movie finished, Sana and Trip walked outside and to the back alley, where cockroaches and mice creeped about but Sana couldn't care less. She had one thing on her mind and one thing only -- to get this job done. "Not exactly the most glamorous place to be snorting fine Colombian cocaine, but being with you makes this alley feel like a five-star hotel, doll." Trip sleazed as Sana laid down her purse on top of a closed dumpster. As he reached for it, Sana moved with the agility of a jungle cat and pinned his arm down with her left hand and reached for her knife with the right one. In one fluid motion, she brought her blade from her thigh to the middle of his spread-out fingers. "You've been stealing from our family, Trip. Giving us counterfeit bills as if we wouldn't catch on sooner or later..." She raised the knife again and once again stabbed the top of the dumpster with a heavy hand, barely missing his ring finger.

"You need to be taught a lesson." She raised the knife again, but this time, she didn't miss his hand when she brought it back down. Yelping in pain, Trip looked down to see half of his pink finger was cut off. "This one is for making a fool out of my crew. And this one..." She raised the knife again, only to chop off half of his ring finger. "...is for calling me a whore."

She let go of his arm and fixed her hair, spitting on him as she walked away. "If it makes you feel better... you can keep the bag. Enjoy the powdered sugar inside."

Dawn  and Big Moe stopped by the theater to see if everything was going well.  As she walked into the theater the marquee read:

Now Showing

Afternoon movie: 12 noon and 3:00 pm, Sat and Sun  - King Kong

Weekdays - 4:30 pm

Admission : fifteen cents for adults – a dime for children

Evening movie  7:00 pm - Dracula

9:00 pm - Chained -  starring Joan Crawford and Clark Gable

Admission: a quarter for evenings and 35 cents for Saturday and Sunday evenings adults only.

Dawn picked up the deposits from Alfred and double checked the candy supply.   Some of the candies were getting low so she helped him prepare an order.

While there she and Big Moe decided to check out King Kong since it was still early.  The bought some popcorn and a drink, sat and thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

After making a pit stop at a nice beverage stand and a place to get something to eat, Tad was now wandering around a bit to find something to do. It wasn't long before he found himself in front of The Palace Theater in 12th Street. The bright lights had attracted his attention along with the large groups of patrons going in and out. There was chatter all around him about the films that were being played inside the theater. He did his best to not pay attention too much as he did not enjoy spoilers.

Unfortunately the earlier events of his day caused him to miss out on King Kong which would have been of great interest to him. So, he decided that he would choose to sit in on the movie 'Dracula' and hopefully be just as entertained. It was not a movie he had seen before and he could hear people talking about it with some excitement.

The ticket booth finally opened up for him to step forward and make his request...

"One ticket for Dracula please." He said as he put the money on the counter.

With ticket in hand he the began to make his way over to the concession stand to pick out a snack and a drink. Although he recently ate and had a milkshake, it wouldn't be a true movie experience without those things. It all looked appealing and he finally settled on what he wanted while waiting in line.

"Hello I'd like a medium popcorn, a medium cola, and some milk duds. Thanks in advance." He said as he put cash on the counter, "Feel free to keep the change as a tip. You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to these treats and the movie. Been too long since I went out to see a film."

The employees behind the concession stand worked surprisingly fast and his food and drink were in front of him in no time. He thanked them again and carried it off to watch the film. Tad quickly found a seat away from other people to hopefully watch the movie in peace. As long as nobody talked during the movie he would have no issues. The lights began to dim and the screen lit up....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some time later....

Tad was making his way out of the theater with a big grin on his face. He stopped at the concession stand to see if he could possibly get a soda on his way out for the walk home. They obliged and Tad couldn't help but talk a bit about the film.

"Now that was a good film. It has been a while since I saw something that gave me such enjoyment while sitting in the theater. I think I would have enjoyed seeing King Kong for the seventh time, but perhaps branching out a bit at the theater can work out." He said as he popped the last few pieces of popcorn into his mouth and tossed the bag in the garbage.

The employees clearly had no interest in chatting with him about it and just politely nodded in agreement. With soda in hand, he made his way out of the theater and began the walk home finally.

Tristan walked into the theater with Virginia Katherine McMath now that he was on the west coast he was dealing with Hollywood.  The young lady stage name he didn't like and he changed it to Ginger Rogers.  She was his date for the night and she wanted to see Dracula why nobody knows.    He paid for the tickets and they sat in the first row of the second half of the seating cluster dead center so they had a great view and he had leg space.  He got her several types of boxed candies that she stuck in her purse as he carried the drinks and she carried the popcorn.

They stayed to watch both features as he liked the second showing more.  The first she kept ducking her head into his chest as he tried to calm her fears.  He even chuckled a few times as she was indeed a girly girl.  However he kept notice that no matter who he was with he thought about this one lady that he for some reason can't seem to get out of his head.

Not truly a movie fan, Hamilton needed to change his routine so he went to the Palace Theater with Wasington, Madison, Mulligan and Burr.  They were watching Chained with Clark Gabe and Joan Crawford.   They sat in the same row but spaced out as they looked at the credits rolling on the screen.  They had popcord and soda and they looked around as each man checked that hidden hardware ensuring they could defend themselves if something jumped off.   Hamilton wasn't really paying attention his thoughts were on the business.

Dawn made a run over to the theater to drop off a case of the new M&Ms candies to add to the candy for sell. She looked at the marquee and realized there was only one evening show.

When she went into the office she asked Tony why there was only one evening show.  He explained to Dawn that Gone with the Wind was three hours long with an intermission.  The movie was way too long for them to be able to show two films.  Dawn didn’t have the three hours plus to see the movie today but assured Tony she would come back the next evening to view it.

Hamilton arrived at fifteen minutes early for the 8 pm show.  He was Vivien Leigh manager and got her the role of Katie Scarlett O'Hara.  He knew that the movie was good and he wanted to relax and enjoy a bag of popcorn and just be a normal person.   He took his seat holding his bag of popcorn and his soda.  He was now comfortable and looking forward to the movie.

It had been ages since Kafka had last been able to watch a movie. Oh, he'd been to plenty of theatres, to be sure. But those visits had been -- pardon the pun -- largely for show as part of a bigger plan. Theatres were one of the few places where the feds couldn't really eavesdrop on what was happening, particularly if mobsters were careful enough to nab the last seats of an otherwise sold-out show. Sordid as it sounded, many a deal had been struck under cover of the darkness and noise of a cinema hall.

And yes, he had shot more than one underling for sniggering at that particular statement.

This time, however, there was no such agenda. He had a rare free evening and was determined to actually focus on a movie for once. Walking into the theatre, he noticed that The Invisible Man was playing. Well, what a mobster wouldn't do to have that kind of power he chuckled internally before walking up to the counter and buying a ticket. Noticing that he had a little time before the movie began, he bought some popcorn, a hot dog and a Sprite. What was the point of a rare outing if he couldn't splurge a bit?

Report Post Tip

Ennio and LogenNinefingers walked down the aisle and found a quiet place to watch The Invisible Man. Always was a good time watching something on the big screen. As advertisements for home products and the US Armed Forces were played on the screen, they talked about what they'd do if they were invisible.

Definitely cause some mischief at the local police precent or mayor's office, those two giving me grief. Biggest thieves in Chicago.

Ennio did some thinking, one person he'd never been able to steal from was his former RHM. All those bodyguards taking their jobs so seriously. He'd look forward to a chance to steal his watch and finally come out ahead, without a slap on the hands.

The show finally began to begin so they sat and began watching the show
