The Day The Mob Won The Bash At the Beach Started by: Frederick_Siegel on Aug 18, '20 07:01

The day was Sunday, September 5th, 1935 and this was the toughest field that the race had ever seen. Frederick walks through the pits and infield looking around at the competition and is really struggling to find a driver that would cooperate with the scheme he was wanting to pull off. Out of the blue there set a 1920 Winton Bullet all alone with nobody around it. Frederick walks up to the ride and starts to look it over real good. He notices that the engine is torn apart and that there are parts missing. Frederick looks at one of his associates and asked Joe what it would take to get this thing back into tip-top shape and be ready to run the race by the afternoon. Joe looks the car over and says that he could possibly have it ready within a couple of hours and that all he had to do was put the carb on it and get it tuned up and it would be ready to roll.

Frederick tells Joe to find out who the car belongs too and get them here pronto. Joe leaves in a haste to find the owner. Frederick keeps walking but never straying too far from the car. After an hour Joe has returned to the car with the owner in tow and introduces Frederick to the owner who happens to be getting ready to load up the car and leave as he didn't think the car would be ready to race. Frederick starts talking to Barney about the car and offers him 250,000 for the car and parts and all of the other things that would be needed to run the race. Barney started to grumble and moan about the money but eventually after about 10 minutes or so Barney took the envelope and stuck it in his pocket and walked off.

Frederick looked at Joe and gave him a look and Joe got right to work on the car, Frederick told Joe and the rest of the crew that they had until 3 pm to get the car running and through the technical inspection and have it on the starting line. Frederick started to walk away and then stopped and turned back around and took off his coat and looked at Joe and asked him for a wrench and started getting his hands dirty to make sure that the car was done by the time he had told them to have it ready by.

Duggee met up with Barney about 5 minutes later. It was almost a shame that it was a fellow Detroit hoodlum who had fallen for the scam, but money was the goal today. Barney in reality was Battlin' Barney Jaszchek, a 2nd generation polish immagrant street fighter and pugilist that Duggee had been working a few fight grifts with.  He'd come upon the 1917 Winton Six-33 Sport Tourer at a bar in Cleveland that he was enjoying a back room high stakes poker game at. The owner was in the hole and sinking fast, and needed cash to finish his current hand. Duggee had offered him $300 on the car, generous to be sure, but hardly a risk when he dropped four 3s on the table and took the lot.

And that was how Duggee had ended up owning an 18 year old car with only 48.6hp. The problem had been what to do with it. The Packard straight Six's he had his crew use produced almost 100hp and his own SSK was almost triple that again. Thats when he'd hit upon the idea of flipping the car and making a profit. It had taken a while and a bit of capital, about 8k in total. But the car had been tarted up, the engine modified somewhat up to 68hp, the 'Bullet' name badge was a nice touch, and added an aire of mystery to a model of car that didn't actually exist, and would be hard to prove given that Winton had stopped manufacturing in 1924 and been sold to GM in 1930 who were using it as an Engine company now.

A few 'wins' in some local unofficial races had given it a pedigree and a reason for it to be hawked round various race tracks. Duggee hoped to offload the 'Bullet' for 20-25k which would have left him with a nice 7k paycheck after costs,so you can only imagine his joy to discover that some sucker had dropped 250k on his fake race car, truely there was one born every minute.

Dugge handed Barney $500 as agreed, and an extra $500 as the score had been so good. 30k to Tetley as his cut for just being the boss, plus an extra 20 to make up for making one of his Made guys a shill, he was sure Tetley would understand though,  at the end of the day you can't con an honest man. And that left him 180k clear. One Hundred  and eighty thousand dollars. Dugge liked the sound of that. Placing the cash in his glove box, he started up the engine of his SSK and rolled out of the track. Today sure was going to be a good day.

Frederick and Joe are working feverishly on the car when Frederick tells Joe that he would be back in a few minutes he had to make a run for something. As Frederick is making his way through the crowd he sees Barney and a very sharp dressed man shake hands. As the two shake hands Barney hands the other gentleman a nice thick envelope and Frederick can only assume that was the money that Frederick had just handed Barney, Frederick shakes his head and figures that he had been duped in the buying of this car and goes on to pick up somethings that were needed for the car and make his way back to Joe and the car to get it finished and get it to the inspection area by 3.

Frederick gets back to Joe and hands him the parts that he had picked up and Joe smiles really brightly and says that would make this car very fast. Frederick smiles back at Joe and says he has his reservations about that and Joe looked puzzled at him. Frederick waved his arms at him and said he would explain later that they needed to finish the car and get it to inspection so they could race the car. Joe looks at Frederick and says, "Okay boss we will get it fixed but who's going to drive it?" Frederick chuckles and points at himself and says "Don't worry Joe I can drive it if you can get it ready." Joe then asks who is going to be the crew chief and Frederick just points to Joe and smiles brightly. Joe shakes his head and grins wide and nods his head in agreement.

Joe gets the car all buttoned up with all the new parts and some of the old parts and has it finished by the deadline and starts to push it to the inspection area. Joe looks at Frederick and says for him to go see a man by the name of William and that William would get him fitted for his driving suit and other safety equipment needed to get in the car and race. Joe told Frederick to hurry and meet with William cause Frederick would be needed at the inspection area as well due to the driver and car needed to be weighed to make sure that they met the weight limit of 2350 pounds to be eligible to race. Frederick hurried and met with William and got his new driving suit, leather helmet, goggles, and driving shoes and then went in a changing room and put the gear on and then headed to the inspection area. Frederick gets to the inspection area in time to meet Joe and get in the car to be weighed. The car meets the weight requirement and pass technical inspection and is cleared to race so Joe and Frederick start pushing it to the starting line and are all smiles after all the hard work they have done has paid off with a chance to start the race and compete on the biggest stage in auto racing.
