Fairest Racing Event - The Working Parts Started by: Mercy_Fiorentino on Oct 04, '20 19:54

Hello, all.

We're nearing the launch of this event, so I wanted to make the details behind it publicly available so you know how it is being executed. I want to ensure that there is no room for suspicion of a fix or corruption, so if you see something that doesn't look right, please call it out so I can either fix it or explain it better.

We're also collating the final prize pot, which so far stands at 350 Credits. I've had offers from participants from the last event (30 Word Story) to contribute to future events, so, if anyone wants to add some perks or credits to this draw, now is the chance to. I'll be very grateful as it raises the value of the event and will give you a formal mention of thanks in the launch thread.

Final note: You do not have to read everything below to take part. The bare minimum you need to know is in Section 6.

Horse Racing Public Sheet

  1. Horse Generation
  2. Track Generation
  3. Trainer Lottery
  4. Mechanics & Method
  5. Role Play Opportunities
  6. User Experience

1. Horse Generation

Horses are generated by random number generators, which decide the following stats:

  • Weight (Rounded to the nearest 50)
  • Preferred Surface
  • Preferred Conditions
  • Preferred Distance

These stats are then used by users to assess the likelihood that a horse will win the race. Further stats are added following completion of Test Races, which give the horses a set race history. For the purposes of this event, horses are being ran three times each to build suitable results

2. Track Generation

Tracks are generated manually by the individual running the event. For this event the six cities were given a surface type and then a distance. During testing, the distances have been shuffled around to provide a mix up of conditions.

3. Trainer Lottery

The trainer lottery is a side event in which users select a horse before race history has been produced or presented to them. They each pay a set fee and at the end of the event, the trainers of the top three horses will receive a split of the money. All horses are currently accounted for (01 October).

Points are awarded by:

  • 1st Place - 3 Points
  • 2nd Place - 2 Points
  • 3rd Place - 1 Point

For this event, the money shall be doubled by the host (20 million total) and divided as below:

  • 10 Million
  • 7 Million
  • 3 Million

Following the death of a trainer, the kin may claim the horse or a refund, on presenting evidence of their previous character. On reclaiming a horse, they may also decide to assign the horse a "Home City" rather than their own, for privacy purposes.

4. Mechanics & Method

Determining Racers

Racers are determined by random grouping via an online tournament picker. They will race in groups of 10, for a total of five races each

Tournament Selector

Determining a Track & Conditions

The track and Conditions are randomly generated for each test race using a number generator.

Locations

  1. Seattle - Turf
  2. Las Vegas - Synthetic
  3. Chicago - Dirt
  4. Detroit - Turf
  5. New York - Synthetic
  6. Philadelphia - Dirt

Conditions

  1. Wet
  2. Moist
  3. Dry

For the event days, two races will be held in each city track, the conditions will still be randomly generated.

Determining the Winner

The winner of a race is determined by several factors. None of the below is revealed to the users, as the modifiers can impact the next race. It is however all recorded and will be released to the public after the event has completed, for transparency.

  • The narrator will review the horses due to race and plot out odds of who will win, based on:
    • Previous race performance against other horses in the race
    • Track suitability
    • Conditions suitability
    • Injury from previous race
    • Weight vs Track distance vs Preferred distance
  • The narrator will then assign "tickets" to each horse, depending on their perceived chances of winning
  • A bingo machine is then run, which will select the winner based on the number drawn, then the second and third place (draw is repeated until different horses number is drawn)
  • This produces the Core Results, based on the probability of each horse winning

Bingo Machine:

https://www.online-stopwatch.com/random-number-generators/online-bingo-caller/

Example:

Horse 1 is the favorite and assign numbers 1 through to 50.

Horse 2 is assigned numbers 51 through to 60

Horse 3 is assigned numbers 61 through to 80

Horse 4 is assigned numbers 81 through to 90

The favorite is likely the winner, but the element of chance is still present.

Modifiers

Once the core results have been determined, modifiers then come into play. Two 6 sided dice will be rolled for each horse, with possible results being:

  • Double 1's - The horse falls, is potentially injured and drops 5 places
  • A Four- The horse stumbles and drops 2 places
  • A Seven - The horse digs deep and jumps up a place, causing them to be more determined in the next race
  • Eleven - The horse suffers a mild injury and drops a place
  • Double 6's - The horse finds an immense amount of energy and sprints into 1st place

Modifiers are rolled in the order of Last Place to First Place according to the Core Results

A roll for "Home City" Horse will also be performed. If the race takes place in the home city determined by the horse trainer, that horse will need to roll higher than a five on the two dice to jump up a place.

Delivering the Results

Results are delivered in two ways.

  • Live in #Racy
    • Core Results are delivered as the start of the race
    • Modifiers are then loosely detailed to finish the race
  • The narrator will then post the results of the race in the corresponding Business District Track Thread for everyone who didn't witness it live to read

Users will need to read the text to understand who the winner was. Users may wish to scrutinize the descriptive writing to understand if their horse was injured or pumped up for the next race, as per the modifiers

5. Role Play Opportunities

Each of the six cities will have a business district thread created to host the various races. These may be owned by a significant figure in that city, or the host themselves. Results of races in that city will be posted there, and the opportunity for users to RP their experiences at the races is also available.

6. User Experience

To take part in an event, users will need to:

  1. Use this Google Sheet document and view the LIVE RACE tab to view the current horses racing
  2. To help make the decision, users can access the HORSES tab to view historic performance and against other horses
  3. Track type, conditions, distance and weight should also be considered, available on the LIVE RACE tab
  4. User will post their guess on a back alley thread provided for each race
  5. User will then either attend the live race in #Racy or read the results posted in the corresponding business district

For every winning guess, the user gets 3 points

If their horse takes 2nd place, they get 2 points

If their horse takes 3rd place, they get 1 point

Prizes will then be distributed based on the highest performing users. A leaderboard will be available from the Google Doc once we get started.

Report Post Tips: 8 / Total: $160,000 Tip

Edit: double 1's will drop the horse to the last position in the race, instead of 5 positions.

utterly gutted this is no longer running and sincerely hope your progeny pick up the baton despite all the hard work and little thanks

Report Post Tip

One of the best event organizers in this community.  Always hate seeing him go down mid-project.  Freaking sucks.  Look forward to meeting his descendants.

Some amendments to the above.

Section 4 - Mechanics & Method

The process of assigning chances of winning is going to become more automated. The percentage chance of a horse winning will be distributed by a weighting system against the existing criteria, being:

- Suitability for Course

- Suitability for Conditions

- Suitability for distance

- Historic performance

The total chance of winning will be calculated out of 100% and odds/chance of success drafted from the percent for each horse.

Modifiers

Modifiers have been reviewed the below:

Modifier Effect
homeCity

Roll Chance of Place Increase

horseBoosted

Place Increase by 3

digDeep

Place Increase + set horseDetermined to TRUE

horseStruggles

Place Decrease by 2

horseFell

Place Decrease by 10 + set horseInjured to TRUE

These are essentially saying:

- If Horse is racing in Home City, roll a chance of a place increase

- If Horse rolls Boost modifier, increase core place by 3

- If Horse rolls Dig Deep modifier, grant a re-roll on the next race

- If Horse rolls Struggles modifier, decrease place by 2

- If Horse rolls Fell modifier, decrease place by max number and horse rolls a chance to Struggle in the next race

--End of Edits--

These changes have been identified as suitable to ensure a fair result calling, with an audit trail that can prove impartiality from the person hosting a race. A lot of the calculation and setup is still manual, but there are more defined rules.

Yes, horse racing will be back. There will be more horses, more chances to get involved and hopefully a simpler explanation where required.

Thanks again for all your interest, look forward to running this again. Any questions, please ask.

Report Post Tip

Edit - Horse Weight also a factor in calculation of winning chances

Report Post Tip

really pleased you're back to finish this, bless you.

Report Post Tip

Introducing a change to how the races will be run after tonight's are completed. This will not effect any current stats or make previous bets unfair. There are no regression amendments required either.

After the odds have been announced and betting is open, I will be running the race privately. The results will be recorded in a back alley thread, line by line, so there is a date and timestamp as evidence of the result being decided before everyone has had a chance to bet.

This is to remove any question of the results being fixed to benefit myself in anyway (even though I don't keep any of the money...).

Any questions or challenges to this, please let me know here.

Jack

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
