Chicago Fires Started by: Johnny_Burtolini on Oct 08, '20 03:10
The cold night air in Chicago made everyone's breath on the street, drift upwards into a single large cloud before dissipating into the air above. Street rats gathered around burning piles and barrels. Johnny kept his head down, not lifting his gaze as he passed by the group of homeless people. He looked behind him to the large plume of smoke rising up from the docks, a tight grin crossing his lips as he pressed a cigarette between his lips and lit the tip with a match. The orange glow burning bright with each drag as he watched the smoke column get brighter and brighter at its base.

He got by on looking at every job like it was any other job. No matter how dirty or how illegal, money was money and every day was payday on the streets. Any street, any where...there was a couple hundred "Johnnys" in every city, guys willing to do whatever the boss asked them...this job had been simple, a warehouse arson to knock the local muscle down a few notches to let them know that the Chicago streets were still owned and everyone would stay in-line until the boss decided to cut them loose on their taxes. Now that they were out of product, they would be missing out on money that was owed...only putting them further into debt with the family. Johnny's nickel plated Colt 1911 was adjusted in his waistband as he took the last drag off of his cigarette and tossed it to the concrete of the sidewalk. He disappeared into the shadows of an alley, eventually coming out a few blocks down and heading into a bar. "Hey Tony, gimme a glass of scotch." Johnny yelled, making his way to the barstool in front of Tony, who stood on the other side of the bar, polishing a glass. "Sure thing, Johnny Boy. But I need ya to clear your tab tonight before you go...I got supplies to buy, sheesh."

Johnny laughed, picking up his glass of scotch and taking a couple gulps from it. "I got you, Tony. Here, here is some cash so's we are even and then here...here's this to go ahead and cover my part of the tab tonight. Any of my friends show up and you can throw em on the same tab with me." He slid a couple bills over to Tony, who gave a silent nod of appreciation. He grabbed the money with one hand and slid the bottle over to Johnny before making his way to the end of the bar to assist other patrons.
