Ham slammed the car door hard enough to shake the sheen of rainwater free and cursed as the droplets hit his slacks.  Of course it had rained.  He had a sheaf of paperwork in one hand and an unopened bottle of scotch in the other.  As he dashed up the steps to the small brick townhouse he owned with his brother Robert he thought he heard a small cry.  He stopped and reversed course, looking into the bushes that lined the flowerbeds in front of the parlor windows.  There was a small kitten curled under a shaggy bush and Hamish bent to pick it up.  It protested but Ham kept a firm grasp on it's miniature body and walked back up the steps.  Tucking the scotch under his left arm he juggled the kitten and the papers and finally managed to get the front door open.  He could hear the clicking of typewriter keys coming from upstairs and called out to his brother. 

"Honey, I'm home!" 

"Hey Sugar!" Came the cheeky reply as Honey thumped down the stairs. He didn't notice the kitten at first as it was more carefully hidden than the ill tucked bottle of scotch and Honey frowned in mock irritation. 

"Ma always said you had her penchant for drinking, did y'already go through the other bott...."

His words stopped short due to the loud mewl that came from Ham's arm and a tiny gray kitten with milk paws attempted to scramble free from the papers that were covering it. It was sodden and miserable looking and without a second thought Honey rushed forward to scoop up the squirming cat from his brother. 

"Come here darling, oh you're soaked to the bone! Where did you come from?" 

He wandered off, cooing to the cat as he managed to find a soft towel to wrap the beastie in while his bemused brother muttered something akin to "I see how it is" under his breath. Once the cat was settled, sucking on a bit of cheesecloth that had been dipped in cream, Honey turned his attention to Ham. 

"How was your day?"
