“It didn't happen that way,”
“It didn’t happen that way,'' Nick said with blood on his hands as the interrogation light shone down the side of his face. With blood dripping down to the floor from his cuffed hands, he was taken downtown to the police station.
“Get Miko”
________________________________________________________________________
The West City Police Department (WCPD) was a very busy workplace. It was the nation’s most advanced criminal justice facility in the 35th century located in the continent Formora. The building had historically been a space research station in the early 21st century, much before The Greater Depression and had been retrofitted to serve for West City. West City had just recently risen up to the number one city of the great nation of Zio Nimor, with their president Miko Hardham. Miko, in her mere 45 years as a servant of West City, had converted the formerly agriculture-only town to a technological hub.
Miko Hardham had an ambitious personality. Born in The Far East and raised in the South’s Outlands, she held the record for having crossed the entire continent of Formora before the age of 70. She graduated top of her class from the Zio Nimor Military Academy and was well versed in various martial arts. Some say that she worked as a black assassin for the Republic back in the old days.
Today was a day of urgency at the WCPD. The Chief of the force himself had called Miko’s office and asked her to come downtown at once, without giving any further details. Just that it was absolutely necessary for her to be there. Miko had never known the Chief to be so mysterious and she was really worried. She had at once summoned her private Hellcat jet and was en route to the police department.

The doors of the WCPD flung open and there was pin drop silence as all the force workers stopped dead in their tracks. Footsteps were heard. A lady, was seen at the end of the long hallway. She was walking towards them. She was fast, yet she held an air of sophistication, a sense almost parallel to royalty. One of the interns from the back of the huge room whispered, “It’s her! It’s Miko Hardham” and then there were more whispers. Soon, the entire room was alive again, but this time, it was just whispers. And all the whispers had two words in common: Miko Hardham.
Miko had just landed and was really concerned. The WCPD had never asked anyone from the office to come downtown. Not once in the entire history of Zio Nimor. The WCPD, though it was the top justice system in Zio Nimor, was not a government agency. It was private. They were a vital role to the nation’s economy and showed a generous face to the public. But in the backroom, near all the dirty politics, the WCPD acted as a wholly different nation of its own. Even training for their officers was done on a separate planet, and they were then shipped down to either Formora or the other continents.
As soon as Miko entered the room, there were loud whispers about her. Miko waited for a while, and then with a sharp clear voice asked for the Chief. One of the junior detectives pointed towards a room, and with a nervous whisper said, “In Interrogation 5, Miss Hardham.”
Miko spun around and almost lunged at the interrogation room. When she opened the door and saw what was before her, all her worries flew away and were replaced with total rage. She was furious.
“Why on Nimor is he here?” she shouted A man, costumed in sheriff attire came up to her, “Madam Hardham. Welcome to the WCPD. Calm yourself and follow me.” The Chief motioned them to follow and they went into the interrogation chamber. Miko then walked up to the handcuffed man.
She performed a deep bow and started, “Oh, Nickolaus, what have they done to you?”. She then turned to the Chief, “Do you have any idea who this man is?” to which the Chief replied, “Miss Miko, please.” He then turned to the handcuffed man. “Master Nick, forgive me but WCPD rules are law here. And you are the prime suspect in this case.”
As soon as Miko heard what the Chief said,
“This man is Nickolaus Walters and you owe him your life, Mister Chief Sir.”
The Chief turned and looked quite surprised. Miko continued, “He is the reason that the The Greater Depression was stopped and if he hadn’t, you would have lost your savings, the country would have lost its savings, its files, everything! You don’t understand, he is the reason the virus did not wipe out all our servers!”
Nickolaus Walters, the man who had been handcuffed and thought to be unconscious the entire episode, suddenly made a movement; he lifted his hand in such a motion that could be interpreted as “Enough” and the Chief along with Miko both quieted themselves.
“Miko, my dear sister, let them, this time I have gone too far. I killed him. I killed him with my bare hands. I strangled him and I made sure he was dead before I then stripped him of his cybernetic implants.” Miko was taken aback.
“But why, Master Nickolaus? You created them…………” and then it hit her, “But ...Can it? No, it couldn’t possibly be…. Unless, oh no you didn’t!” Nickolaus smiled. “Check the DNA tests. It was me. I killed him.” He then turned towards the Chief, “Take me in, Chief. I surrender.”
As Miko was still trying to process the huge load of information that was put upon her, Nickolaus whispered just loud enough for Miko to hear, “It’s okay, child. Take care of West City for what lies ahead. Talk to Kay. He knows what must be done.”
Miko couldn’t believe her ears as she watched the drone sentinels take Nick away. Kay? No one had heard from him in years ...except for that guy by the bridge who claims he has met Kay. But is it worth it? The last anyone had heard of Kay, he had been heard rambling about time travel and Chicago mafias. Maybe he had gone crazy, dementia was pretty common in those of his age... |
