| Thread Editing | Started by: Phreaking_Panda on May 16, '11 02:36 |

Looking around my HQ, I noticed a few threads that, in the near future, I might need to change. The current way, I would need to wack the thread and put it back up. As I have problems with stickying threads, I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I could just edit what's currently in the thread? The original poster could press the edit button and the text currently in the thread/post would pop up in the WYSIWYG editor or in the old editor. They could then edit the text that needs changing and post it. Instead of saying when the thread was posted, it would change to "Last edited by xxx on xx/xx/xxxx". This could be extremely useful in cases where someone posts a thread in the streets that gets borked by the coding. They could just edit it and change the needed parts. I do not really see any cons to this change, it would just make things a little easier. I feel it would be rather easy to implement, though I'm not a coder so I wouldn't know for sure. |

The only argument I have against this is that often, people provoke reactions for what is said on the streets. If some random jerk comes to the streets and says "Crawford sucks. He kicked my dog. He hunts terminally ill children with a crossbrow." I would be a bit peeved. But by the time I've talked to his CL, the thread has been edited to say that Crawford likes sunshine and daffodils. There are so many arguments in the streets or OOC- as it is now, it's clear to everyone what has been said. If editing is allowed, this would become much more complex and annoying. Currently what you say, whether it reflects positively or negative on you, hangs out there forever. I think that's a good system. Wacking threads can be tedious, but in my opinion it's better than the alternative. |

Hmmm. Good point, Crawford. Perhaps it could be used simply for the original poster of a thread? Instead of being used in each individual post. As, if I am not mistaken, having a thread wacked takes away more experience than writing the thread originally gives..Which is a bit of a nuisance if you borked your thread in the streets. Or if you need to go back and make a small change. For instance, if you used something that wasn't in the era of the game, you could go back and change it to reflect that. |

When I say "used for the original poster of the thread", I mean for the first post. |

I think this is something we could possibly do, as long as everyone who views the thread can clearly see its been edited and view the original. |

I'm not sure how you could view the original, but I was thinking you could put the bit where it says it is edited in the place of "Reply by: Squishy at May 16, '11 04:57" You could change that to "Edited by: Squishy at May 16, '11 04:57" |

I see reasoning for this, and it wouldn't be too difficult for the coders to add this. All it would take is a new row in the sql that originally is the same as the thread then if they aren't the same it has a link to the original. |

Hmmm. Perhaps the admins could create a seekrit "trash" forum that backs up every file that's been edited. It wouldn't show up in the forums list and when you edit a post/thread, it would put a link towards the bottom of the edited post/thread to the original. That way, if someone edited a post to get out of shit, the original would still be there and people could see it. |

Not a fan of this. I'm not liking the idea of reading a thread, seeing it's been edited and having to read BOTH versions to see where the differences are. |

If you wish to keep as much realism as possible, how exactly does this not fit? You could go tell your Don that so and so said this, but they would have no proof. The person could then come back and say that they said something else. However, this suggestion was not for that purpose. It was to make managing a HQ easier and to help with borked posts in the streets. As I've stated there should be some sort of "trash" forum in which the original posts are placed once edited, you would still be able to read what they originally posted. Saying you don't like an idea because you would need to put forth more effort is a tad lazy. An excellent example would be the Auth thread for SexyBeast. Having posted it in the back alley several times before posting in the streets, his thread was still unreadable because coding messed it up. With this suggestion, he could go back and fix the problem, saving both face and the strain on one's eyes to read the post. |

The only threads you should be able to edit are the HQ Forum threads and the Back Alley threads. Thats it. As i've been told before.. |

Honestly, I think it would be more productive right now to focus on implementing and expanding more on how the game already is instead of seemingly-simple-but-actually-complicated tweaks.
This is an RPG, and I think the fact we can't just edit everything (apart from the biggest reasons said above) we say/have said ecourages really well done stories. I think it encourages better writing, and editing, and makes you put effort into doing it right. Besides, if you are naturally a litt bad at grammar, or you do typos often, the back alley is right there. |

Apparently, you guys have skipped over the original reasoning for this suggestion and jumped immediately on the bad that someone could do with it. As I originally stated, this would help in keeping the HQ straight. This would also help when someone borks posts. Just because they post it in the back alley 10 times doesn't mean it's going to come out right. Having an option to change it without bothering the admins to wack the thread and losing exp would be, I believe, a good thing. However, as always, people see the bad in every suggestion before they see the good. |

We're not saying we don't see the 'good', but the negatives definitely outweigh the positives. |
