Race's Returns - The Mechanics Started by: JackMezzo on Nov 11, '20 14:25

You do not have to read everything below to take part. The bare minimum you need to know is in Section 6 and Section 3 for Horse Ownership

The continued transparency of this feature is important to me, as such, I've updated the core functionality brief below, omitting only the specifics on how the multipliers affect outcome. I've also removed references to the previous tournament and included details of the updated functionality. Please advise if you have any questions.

The most significant change can be found in reference to the Home City Advantage, following feedback from users.

1. Horse Generation and Stats

Horses are generated by random number generators, which decide the following stats:

  • Weight (Rounded to the nearest 50)
  • Preferred Surface
  • Preferred Conditions
  • Preferred Distance
  • Race History

These stats do not change, with the exception of Race History. The multiplier that uses this stat will only consider the previous 10 race positions at the time of a race. This means a horse which is performing poorly, or excelling, will change their overall performance score over time.

2. Track Generation

Tracks are generated manually by the individual running the event. For this event the six cities were given a surface type and then a distance. During testing, the distances have been shuffled around to provide a mix up of conditions.

They are now set to:

Location Surface Distance
Los Angeles Turf 0.8 Miles
Las Vegas Synthetic 1 Mile
Chicago Dirt 1.5 Miles
Detroit Turf 1.5 Miles
New York Synthetic 0.8 Miles
Philadelphia Dirt 1 Mile

Weather conditions are considered on the day of the race, with the host checking local forecasts to determine the best match of the three conditions type.

Conditions

  1. Wet
  2. Moist
  3. Dry

3. Horse Ownership

Horses may be bought and sold by users. The horses which are available can be seen on The Stables spreadsheet.

  • Horse Owners receive a share of the money taken from bets, after all winning bets have been paid out. This split is 50/30/20 for First, Second and Third, respectively
  • A user may only own one horse at a time, with exception to horse auctions held by myself
  • A horse can be sold at any time to another user, providing the buyer does not already own a horse. Both parties need to just contact myself and approve the deal
  • On death, the horse is put up for auction and the owner has no claim to it

4. Mechanics & Method

Determining Racers

Racers are determined by random grouping via an online tournament picker. They will race in groups of 9 at a time.

Tournament Selector

Determining the Winner

The winner of a race is determined by several factors. All rolls are recorded and carried out in advance of any betting, which ensures there are no adjustments made to favor a particular punter.

  • Preferred Conditions, Distance and Surface stats of a horse will are matched to the track and conditions that the horse is racing at. The greater the number of matches, the greater the multiplier of their chances of winning.
  • Preferred Weight has a correlation with Preferred Distance, granting additional bonus if the horse is racing a distance ideal to its weight category.
  • Race History is generated to replicate the first 10 races of the horse. On a given race, the previous 10 races are totaled. Different ranges are then used to calculate the Form of the horse. The lower the number, the greater the multiplier applied.

For example, a high performing horse might have a similar or greater chance of winning a race which a horse that matches all four preferences does.

A typical race will unfold as follows:

  • The host (myself) will review the horses due to race and observe the statistical chance they have of winning.
  • Odds will be plotted against each horse
  • A number grouping will be given to each horse.

Example:

Horse 1 is the favorite to win and assigned numbers 1 through to 50.

Horse 2 is assigned numbers 51 through to 60

Horse 3 is assigned numbers 61 through to 80

Horse 4 is assigned numbers 81 through to 90

The favorite is likely the winner, but the element of chance is still present.

  • Numbers  are then drawn using an online Bingo machine and the horses have their core positions mapped
  • Modifier rolls are then made, which will adjust the core positions
  • Home City Advantage is then considered, which will produce the final scores
  • The race results are written up in a back alley location
  • The odds and races available to bet on are released to the public
  • On the day of the race, the host will make the results public

Modifiers

Once the core results have been determined, modifiers then come into play. Two 6 sided dice are rolled for each horse, with possible results being:

Modifier Effect
Home City

If horse is racing in their home city, the dice must roll higher than a five to be successful. This will result in a place increase, however the number of places can be increase by the support shown on the day of the race.

Boosted

The horse rolls a Double Six, increasing their position by 3 places

Dig Deep

The horse rolls a Seven and increases their place by 1. For the next race, they will be Determined and if failed to roll a positive modifier, they roll again. If higher than a five then they increase their place by 1.

Horse Struggles

The horse rolls an 11 and cannot keep the pace. Their position is decreased by 2

Horse Falls

The horse rolls Double Ones and falls. Their place is decreased to last position and they are considered Injured. On the next race, unless a positive modifier is rolled, they roll again. If higher than a five, they Struggle and have their place decreased by 2.

Modifiers are rolled in the order of Last Place to First Place according to the Core Results

Home City Advantage

On the day of the race, a post will be made in the appropriate Business District thread that represents the track the horse is racing at. Any further posts made by residents of that city will increase the number of places a successful Home City roll provides, if the roll is successful.

  • Posts made up until the time the race begins will be considered
  • Posts must be within the rules of the site and appropriate for the Business District
  • Only posts by home city residents will be considered, so others can join in if they wish

This means that Home City advantage may change the results written up when the race is first run, however as there is public evidence of this, it is not considered an issue. The host will adjust placing as appropriate on the day of the race.

  • 5 Users posting increases place by 1
  • 7 Users posting increased place by 2
  • 10 Users posting increases place by 3

Dice Roller

Delivering the Results

Results are delivered in two ways.

  • Live in #Racy
  • The narrator will then post the results of the race in the corresponding Business District Track Thread for everyone who didn't witness it live to read

Users will need to read the text to understand who the winner was. Users may wish to scrutinize the descriptive writing to understand if their horse was Injured or Determined for the next race, as per the modifiers

5. Role Play Opportunities

Each of the six cities will have a business district thread created to host the various races. These may be owned by a significant figure in that city, or the host themselves. Results of races in that city will be posted there, and the opportunity for users to RP their experiences at the races is also available.

6. User Experience

To take part in an event, users will need to:

  1. Use this Google Sheet document and view the currently live races tabs to view the horses racing and the available odds
  2. To help make the decision, all information on the horses and track is available from the Race # tabs
  3. Users will place any bets following the instructions provided
  4. Users can then attend the races in the Business District and support their horses, or just to take part
  5. User will then either attend the live race in #Racy or read the results posted in the corresponding business district

Once results have been made public, the host will calculate winnings and pay out any funds due to punters and horse owners. Race history is updated after every horse has raced, and we repeat.
