Ethan Elijah Edwards grew up in rural Washington as an only child. As a farmer's son,  he never went without food or clothing but his family was still considered incredibly poor by general societal standards.  In the summer when he was 10 he befriended the daughter of a local business mogul, who after losing his wife sent his daughter to live with her grandparents over the summer while he traveled.  The two became quick friends, then when he was 12 she moved in permanently with her grandparents.  By the time the two were teenagers, fast friends became childhood sweethearts.  It was a relationship her father fervently didn't approve of, but let it go on for a while believing his daughter would meet up with a nice rich, cultured young man and forget all about the poor farm kid.  However, after a few years when it became clear that his daughter was taken with Ethan he took her and moved away from the entire state of Washington altogether.   After her sweet 16, Ethan never saw his girl again.  Heartbroken, and angry, he swore that he would find her and prove himself worthy of her. 

When he turned 18, he moved to Seattle hoping to somehow make a name for himself.  Ethan stopped going by his first name and started going by his middle name, preferring to be called either Eli or Te, the nickname his girl gave him the summer they met.
