The year was 1725 and his name was Gavin. Gavin Gambino. He was 10 years old and living in Florida. The cuban native fit right in with all of the other Spanish immigrants. To say his life was easy wouldn't be accurate but to say it was hard would be quite the stretch. Since the age of 5 he has been on the piers doing whatever he can with the sailors and to make some money. He was good too. Barely able to sit at a table but could drink a pint or two. He was also very good with knots so he often found himself tying them on the ships for tired sailors. Today we listen in on one of the most important days of his life.
As he finished the last knot he wiped the sweat away from his face and stared out into the ocean, his souls freedom. He knew one day he would sail to the ends of the earth and back again. As a breeze gently blew past him sending shivers down his spine he snapped back into reality and remember that today was not that day. Placing three fingers under the sun he measured the distance to the horizon. At that moment a panic set in him so deep he nearly forgot he was 30 feet in the air tying knots on the...at that moment of fear and realization while climbing down the ropes hewas blessed with a clear mind.
Clear enough to remember he had never been told the name of this ship. A ship without a name is...well unheard of. As he set foot on dock he tried to get a view of the bow but was unable. "Another time" He thought to himself. For now he must hurry home and meet his mother. As he turned to rush home he found himself face first into a large stone like man.
"Ye be a wee lad. A fearless one at that."
Gavin snapped back and stumbled over his words looking for the appropriate way to relieve himself of this mans presence. Instead the man took one knee and leaned towards Gavin and whispered into his ear.
"Have ye wee ears laid on the words of Bimini in these parts?"
Gavin thought for a moment, he had actually heard rumors of such a place. As if reading Gavins mind in one motion the man stood up bracing himself with one arm and and grabbing Gavin in the other. As he clutched him in his arm the man said the words Gavin will never forget, "I be Capn' Spriggs and we be settin sail for the fountain of youth lad." |
