Stop making these people your rhm/lhm Started by: Mxyz on Dec 28, '20 21:51
Mxyz walks his way through the NY streets before grabbing a soapbox from a nearby trash alley, setting the box up on the corner of the street.

Before he speaks, he sees a young man stepping off the boat, green as ever to this world of ours, but he had connections and a bloodline that was recognizable.

"You there. You looking for a job?"

Mxyz inquires as the green boy looks at him.

"Not just a job, but I'll make you a hand in my notorious crime family. How's that sound? Sound good?"

The boy gets excited and accept the proposal. Mxyz pulls his hand back and retracts on the offer.

"Sike. Yeah right."

Mxyz ignores the man and jumps right up onto his soapbox.

"Stop doing this. Stop making people who come right off the boat your LHM or RHM. Not only is it disrespectful to your family, it shows you've already had your mind made up on organized promotion within your family. It shows that some things can just handed to on a silver platter without any work done at all."

Mxyz pauses and scans the crowd.

"I can hear your arguments already. You have to have someone you trust and know are reliable in that type of position. Totally understandable, and that's what you're looking for when running organized crimes. Someone dependable and right for the job."

Mxyz sighs.

"You can wait, honestly. A week and a half. You can seriously wait until that day if it's that important to you to have someone very specific as your hand. Let people get familiar with them. Let them see it's not just a fasley given position and this person is apparently the best for the job at hand. Let them not feel like their hard work is just shit, and regardless of anything - everything is predetermined."

Mxyz slowly nods his head to his own comments. Agreeing with himself.

"You're not wrong for wanting someone you absolutely trust as your right hand. You're not wrong for giving left hand to someone who is going to keep you organized and give thoughtful opinions. Crewleaders, you are not wrong.

The wrong part is just giving it to someone who doesn't have their made man button. Made man is an honored position and a celebrated one. To me, they come hand in hand. You shouldn't have one without the other."

Mxyz looks up from his feet.

"I'm a made man. I have a voice, but no real power. Let's just clear the air on that right now. This is a declaration for observation, nothing else. I'd like to request that the great leaders of our world look into this proposal and give it some real thought. It's a small thing that makes a huge difference.

And in practice, it can become a new norm.

Eleven days. Each member must at least have that before becoming an upper echelon of their respected city. It's not a big ask. And I think it's a fair one."

Mxyz opens his arms to the crowd.

"Your thoughts?"

Shayna had not been around the streets long, but she had picked up a few things here and there. As she listened, she quietly gathered some thoughts. Did she agree? Yes. Wholeheartedly, yes. But could there be another aspect brought to it? Yes. Finally there was something to discuss, a something she could sink her own thoughts into.

I think you raise a lot of good points. I agree. One hundred percent, and I know all the arguments against it, heard them all.

The best point that you have raised is that it is disrespectful to one's family. Those that have put in the time and have gotten themselves to Made Man. I also agree that you do not need to make these people hands, but at the same time I believe you should in fact honor their work. Respect their efforts. Wait until the individual has made their actual bones in the family.

This brings about a question, are these actions actually making the rank of Made Man and higher mean much less? I think they might be.

She turned her attention for a moment to gaze around her.

I understand that I am not of a rank to argue it, but these are my thoughts that I am merely throwing out there.

Would it be a bad thing to consider taking hands from other cities? Since we are on the subject of hands, they would not have technically made their rank in the city that they would be a hand for. Would this not also be a bit disrespectful to the members of the city?

Just a few thoughts to ponder.

Mxyz turns to Shayna and listens to her side of things. He nods while she speaks and smiles.

"You will always have a voice on these streets when I'm speaking, and you will be heard thoughtfully for participating. We are adults here. Well... most of us."

Mxyz laughs to himself.

"Is this conversation overdone? Of course it is. It's been driven into the ground that some people can't even fathom it being brought up again. Maybe it keeps being brought up for a rightful reason? All it takes is the leaders of our world to agree, and it's a done deal. Or at least a majority. A majority vote is a majority vote for a reason in my mind. And it's hard to argue when so many people lean one way and out of respect to the democracy of it in general."

Mxyz continues on.

"Back in my day..."

He pulls out a cane and leans on it.

"Back in my dayyyyyy."

He puts the cane away.

"Apologies, had a moment. But you bring up a good point about a hand coming from another city and that's always a valid point. Is it a good tool to avoid having a hand who isn't made? Yeah, sure it is.

Might it be counter productive and ingnite some of the problems you bring up? Absolutely. Both a young hand and buying a made from another city do bring up a way a crew is being run to the outside eye. And it very well could effect people's decision on whether or not to join that crew for those reasons.

Admittedly, I'd be more open to joining the crew that brought in someone from a different city if that situation was in front of me.

Only reason for that is, BACK IN MY DAY, it was a common practice that those individuals were bought and paid for. A crewleader should be compensated if they are losing someone valuable in that case. It's better than the alternative that happens, someone ends their life and their son or daughter does it anyway. Which, in my eyes, is a shittier practice than a payment.

And even that payment is a risk. It's like buying a player from another team for your franchise and putting a lot on them to meet your expectations. They weren't free, and shouldn't be. But even that decision could effect your recruiting.

However, I'm more acceptable with that for a cash transaction. Compensated. At least it still solves the main problem I have: people under made man being a hand of the family."

Mxyz turns to the crowd.

"Nothing is perfect. And situations are different.

Eleven days. I still think it's plausible to wait eleven days. You'll live, or you weren't long for this world anyways.

Thank you very much for your time Shayna, that's important to me.

Please come forward if you agree or disagree with me. If you have better ideas. Let's tango."

Out from the shadows came Salvatore, dressed in his simple black dress pants and white shirt.

Salvatore stood and listened to the discussion and then decided to speak up.

"Ciao amici...in my brief time here, I'm not certain I have even seen the deserving respect of anyone who is made into "our thing".

Sipping on a shot of espresso, he then continued.

"In Sicily, a made member, a man/woman of honor is not to be touched. By a fellow friend or by anyone on record, especially the latter. Regardless of the borgata. Do we as a collective society understand the weight one carried when embraced as a member? Do we follow etiquette? Should we be introduced properly by a third party ? Without doing so would be a violation of the sacred oath."

Upon finishing his espresso, a simple cigarette would be lit as Salvatore continued.

"Lately, we do not all seem like 'friends' as we should be. Sharing territory and treating each other as such is how we should conduct ourselves.

And so...I have to agree, that work put in to prove one's self to a borgata should be paramount. Imagine a well known boss appoint their child - a spoiled brat living on a name as boss when the cohorts who helped the boss achieve their status are left with crumbs."

With a hope for peace in Cosa Nostra, Salvatore would walk off and disappear into the shadows from which he emerged.

Tommy was finishing up getting his shoes shined and paid the guy who was working on his shoes a twenty. Around the corner he saw a crowd gathering and went to go see what all the commotion was about over on Soapbox Ave. After listening for a while he decided to join in the conversation.

"Here's the thing. Not every one crew is setup the same or runs the same. Not one size fits all. Some crews are unique with how they are run and who they choose to be their hands. A CL could decide to make their hands rotate between certain people in their crew for a few days say Joe Schmoe is LHM for a day and then maybe Billy Knucklehead is LHM the next day and sometimes it may happen that those people are below made. You make a good point for the RHM having to be made I think that should be the standard but LHM? Eh I think LHMs should be allowed to be below made and I would have no issues with that."

Rosalia Orazia was skipping along the streets minding her own chewing on some grape flavored gum from the local candy store.  When she heard a intriguing conversation. Knowing that most people never paid any attention to what a  child had  to say she quipped  as she passed by.

I am just an annoying tween, but I have learned one thing in my short life in this world. Unfortunately there will always be people who get maximum credit, for minimum effort.

Her words trailed on the air behind as she continued to skip along the streets enjoying the sunny day.

Indifference was drunk - and here he was deep in thought again because of it.  The timing of mxyz bringing his thoughts to the streets could not be more perfect.

"Thanks for piquing my interest with your thoughts, sir. I think that what you said has a certain value.  Like every other situation that applies here in mafia-world - I don't think that this is a situation that you can apply one rule to several different situations."

Indifference excused himself for a moment to guzzle 4 beers gather his thoughts before continuing.

"You see - when selecting a hand, one has to work with what they have.  If there are not higher ranked options within the crew - then is a leader to just not have any hands?  I don't think that's right, and I don't think that they should be made to wait.

Indifference thinks again before continuing...

"If a person of higher rank does not prefer the title - should they be forced into it?  I think not.  Being a hand is something that you gotta wanna do.  Once again, in this situation I think that a thug in diapers might still be a better viable option that nothing."

"In all - I think what's in the crew behind the babyhand has to be considered.  If the gods were to interject again - maybe the rank of the hands should be the cap for the highest rank in the crew beyond the leader, not the rank of the leader himherself.  I'm just spitballing here, but I don't think that it's a terrible idea."

Indifference rubs his chin to get the beer suds off thoughtfully as he waits for others to engage in the conversation.

Mxyz looks around at all the people who have gathered around the soap box. He smiles as everyone gets involved and shares their opinions on the matter. He turns to Chalen.

"You drunk, mate?"

Mxyz then turns to Tree and Yeah Right.

"People of a new bloodline get their chance. I say that because even though there's old faces still running around this country, I have to also admit that there's new ones. The ratio isn't as great as you'd like to see, but the signs are there. People with exceptional drive will get looked at. It's hard to not notice those people.

And sadly, yes. This is the way it used to be until things became more acceptable. Now we have to determine if it's a big enough thing to not make acceptable. What impacts would this have on our world? Admittedly, I dont think much besides a code of honor that might suprise you from time to time.

You'd be schocked at how much your mind could change given 11 days extra to think about the positions."

Mxyz turns his attention to Salvatore.

"I think you were on the right path, but then you drifted away from our convo. Let's keep this concentrated on whether made man and a hand position should be one in the same.

However, I like some your other topics. I may just broaden on those another day."

Smiling to Salvatore, Mxyz now turns towards Rosalia.

"Such is life and all the aspects we live in. Just the way it is sometimes, but still, not all the time."

Mxys looks over at Tommy.

"You make good points that every situation is different. What if a city head just died and someone is setting up to help the city fight a war? What if our world is decimated and we're left with 3 rulers to choose from? What if there's a competition going on for a city that you've signed up for?

Every situation will be different. I was RHM for Giyu whenever he made his move rid the last regime. Afterwards, someone came in that was more formidable than me. It's a position I'm not fit for, in my opinion. I have to realize as a participant that I can't be part of the problem. I did my duty for Giyu, but I also knew my place to be replaced.

Very good points, sir."

Mxyz listens to Indifference next and nods his head.

"Indifference, I thank you for coming out to oppose my views with logical reasoning. It's honestly hard to argue with any of the valid points that you bring up. A lot of the time, you're playing a hand with the cards you were dealt. To get a solid and proper crime organization up and running, you kinda need some of the pieces to the puzzle to actually be there. And sometimes that's not the ideal predicament you find yourself in.

Can a leader survive the days until his hands are of rank? I think so, especially a new leader. Is it fair to ask that of them? Not sure haha. Allowing that to even be a thing opens up it being acceptable at any time. You either buy in completely or not at all."

Mxyz turns toward the crowd.

"Eleven days. Is it a fair ask of our crewleaders to wait that long regardless of their circumstance or situation? And remember, eleven days would usually be the max wait. Most would run under unless it's for lack of patience."

Mxyz thinks for a moment.

"Can we get some leaders or hands from Los Angeles to join us in this conversation? They seem to be the current ones practicing this at the moment and I'd love to hear from them.

They, in themselves, have a very unique circumstance ahead of them and it would be thrilling to hear from them."

Salvatore glances over to Mxzy

"A simple answer should be, no.  A left hand must always be made.  If there are others in the group who are made members and not RHM or LHM, they should not take orders from someone who has not taken the oath - period."

Tommy just shakes his head at Salvatore

"See Sal, I disagree with that. LHM isn't that important compared to a RHM. I strongly believe that LHM should be open to those under Made. To me allowing the LHMs to be under Made allows new blood to be given a chance. LHM can be seen as a proving ground for new folks and can help groom them to become a RHM later on and maybe one day they eventually become a CL."

"Then a formal description of what an RHM vs. an LHM is. Regardless, I think we are agreeing to disagree."
Report Post Tip

"Good evening, mxyz. How refreshing it is to have your voice out in these streets again. I'd like to offer my opinions on the matter at hand.

I fear your request that all hands be restricted to mafiosi at least 11 days of age, while admirable, is idealistic and unrealistic. As has been discussed in the previous comments, many times there are circumstances that prevent a leader of having hands of age or rank. Bypassing the whole "trust" issue altogether, sometimes there just simply isn't anyone available that meets the requirements, even randoms that most leaders wouldn't entrust right off the bat.

For example, when I first started my operation in South Side, I had one person who met those requirements - Cinnamon. He was my right hand for roughly 24 hours, before my HQ was full and I sent him to open his own operation. From that point on, my only options were young people. Given the choice between a youngster I knew nothing of, and youngsters who descended from my close friends, I naturally chose the latter.

I get what you are saying - hands should be made. It adds substance to the rank, and the hand position itself - when at all possible, that is. We want to avoid being too totalitarian in these type of things, IE made hands or no hands, etc. Exceptions must be made based on circumstances, however I wholeheartedly agree that when possible, all hands should be eleven days, and made man preferably.

I'd also like to touch on something Tommy-Capello said:

"See Sal, I disagree with that. LHM isn't that important compared to a RHM. I strongly believe that LHM should be open to those under Made. To me allowing the LHMs to be under Made allows new blood to be given a chance. I disagree with the sentiment that LHM isn't as important as RHM. To me, they are basically equal. I have had several interchanging hands in my lifetime, each one of them trusted equally with RHM or LHM duties. For me, personally, regardless of if they are at my right or my left, these people are a reflection of myself and my family. I will only place people I truly trust and believe in to hold those positions, because in the end I am responsible for their actions and the reactions that may come of them. I'm not likely to trust that position to "new blood" unless they are incredibly impressive and have earned that chance. That's not to say that I would not or have never trusted new blood in either position, just that it is much more likely for me to use people who I know and love, and have worked with before. I urge other leaders to try new blood when it is deemed earned as well, but I dislike the narrative the LHM is "lesser" and should be reserved for new players to be trained as uppers. That isn't precisely what you were saying, and I don't mean to make it seem like it was, but it is a narrative that I have seen at times and your comment made me think of it.

An underlying issue which ancestors of mine have fallen foul of is the smiting hand of God.

You make a person a temporary hand in a time of strife, for example, that person for whatever reason upsets the Gods... You die for their transgressions.

Result - Hand positions are nepotistically given to fully trusted descendants.

That will never change, earn the trust.

Are there true duties assigned to a RHM vs a LHM?

Asking for a friend (or me, a new player).

Report Post Tip

"An interesting question, Salvatore_Mancuso, albeit not one that I feel has a single straightforward answer. The duties of a hand differ across different leaders and different hands. They can be minimal or vast depending on the leader and the hands.

For instance, I personally tend to be a very hands on, do it all myself type leader. I handle the shot reports, the earnings reports, the day to day operations. Really the main duties of my hands are to be around when I am not, and be a hotline to me outside of this world should I need to be here. They generally handle any mass mails that I miss that need to be forwarded and so on. That's not to say that they aren't capable of handling things without me, I'm quite confident that any of my hands could handle any situation should need be, however I prefer to be involved in all cases if possible. That's just who I am.

I have been in families where the RH is essentially the leader, and the leader is learning from the RH. In those cases, the RH obviously holds more importance than the left, and it is clear to see. I've seen leaders dole out certain responsibilities to each of their hands, such as handling a weekly earnings report or organizing crew competitions. My ancestors have tried these type of things as well. It really depends on how involved the hands wish to be, and how willing the leader is to share responsibilities.

In summation, no, there are no "true" duties for each position, at least not in an official sense, although the overall duties of hands are generally similar across the board.

I think what NathanExplosion is saying here is that he has a man crush on me.  I'm fucking irresistible.

In all seriousness though - I appreciate the dialogue here and many of you have given me a different perspective on this topic.   Back to the top though - can I commit to waiting 11 days to give someone a hand role?  No, I could not.  I will commit to the fact that we need to give these roles to people who have in fact earned it if you have that available within your family.  I think that means something different to everyone - and it's a diversity among us that I respect.  That doesn't just mean ranking, or age, or anything specific to me.  It means sound decision making, reliability and trustworthiness to me.
