Mxyz was standing at a newspaper stand, handing the gentleman a dime in return for the piece. There was an article in there that had caught his eye when walking down the sidewalk. Mafia bosses and their crimes throughout history. It was a good read, but could've been better. Seems like an article that was slapped together without any real meaning to it besides showing the basics on a neutral course. Mxyz wanted to expand on that idea in his own way. So to his soapbox he went. Back to the corner on NY that he made his first speech at, thay seemed like a lifetime ago. "Ladies and gentlemen, I read a very observing article the other day. One about our lives and those who have influenced the history around us for quite a long time. While reading this article, I realized.... most of the authors writing about us heavily focus on the accomplishments that were reached by men... Yes, I'm saying exactly what you're thinking." Mxyz shuffles in place some, but continues on. "Is the majority of criminal activity done by males? Well, yes. Men are the majority in this world of ours, which makes sense. We are usually the aggressive party. We are the one with motivation, ambition, and vision.... But I digress. Men did not own this world and that precedent was set a long time ago, before many many of us even stepped a foot on these shores. Us men were an afterthought to the first Godmother Tita. A woman who ran a crime organization with the balls of any male that could've done it. And why is Godmother Tita's time so important? Well, it stopped us from having conversations like this to begin with. She broke the mold early in our history and put women on equal footing with men right out of the gate. In a time where Godmother Tita's success or failure could've wrote a different kind of history. In short, Tita set the bar. And she set the bar early. And... she set a high bar on what was expected from Godmothers in our lives. To which, women had the chance to prove themselves time and time again. And they did just that." Mxyz smiles and motions to the crowd with his hand. "The women who have came after Tita have been exceptional in their own way, in my opinion. And a lot of the time, they have ran better organizations than most men because of the qualities and characteristics they carry. They held their own on diplomacy, decision making, and public speaking. Could we be standing here and having a different discussion given a different time frame? Possibly, but for how long it would've lasted is the mystery to me." A tear rolls down Mxyz's cheek. "My ancestors talk of an absolutely remarkable woman who was godmother in his day. Godmother Innocence of Los Angeles. One of the most grounded and strong willed women of his time. She created an environment that was addictive to be around. She made hard decisions and followed through with them. She made promises that she kept. But most importantly, she cared about you. She cared about your well being. And in my family's personal journals, she created something that was hard to recapture, even after many tries. It was a special time and it was headstrong by a woman. Better than any man could've done it. Innocence was hands down one of the best female crime bosses this country had seen, but without putting gender to it... she was easily on the best crimes bosses of all time. Not even debatable to me." Mxyz wipes the tears from his eye and grinds down hard on his teeth to try and stop emotion. "In end, we could've been having a different talk today about how women don't get the chance that men do, and how the equality around here isn't so equal... but we aren't, and that's for good reason. A trend that was started by the likes of Godmother Tita and followed through with other godmothers like Innocence. Women carved their own history in our country and I don't think that's touched on enough. It could've all been very much different." Mxyz turns his head to the other portion of the crowd. "So... women of this country. Housewives or hardened vets? Do they do it better than the men? And what Godmother has made the biggest impact on your life? Let's tango, my friends." |
