Little moments of silence Started by: Jen on Jan 31, '21 23:08

Hours turned into days, and days slowly turned into weeks. She was no closer to a solution and yet time insisted on marching on. She sat wrapped up in a thick wool coat, outside the Shed staring at the turbulent winter waters of the lake. This wasn’t where she belonged, days of trying and searching she knew this wasn’t it. Sometimes she could stay busy enough with activities or drink enough with Foamy and Indifference to get her brain to be silent and forget, even if it was only for a few hours. Those were the good times. But, this was one of those nights, sitting by the lake sipping something brown and strong out of a flask as she blinked back tears, watching the waves wondering how hard it would be to just walk in and let the water take her away. Would she wake up where she belonged? Or would she cease to exist in either timeline, would her family never know her? She started softly chuckling, “Maybe Dad will finally get that Kevin he wanted.” she thought to herself, stiffening at the sound of someone approaching.

As the wind wafted the Squirrel sent of Foamy towards her she lifted her hand up and over her head to offer her friend the flask. After a moment of contemplative silence, she finally spoke,  “I miss my friends and family.” Jen slumped down lower as if trying to vanish inside herself, she didn’t even look to have a neck anymore.  “You know how when you’re in a busy place and people are talking around you and to you?” she asked him, moving a bit over so he could sit should he want to.

“They all smile, wave, and give the usual bullshit small talk.” she let out a little laugh, “Oh hey Foamy, how are you?” and someone else is going, “Foamy! You smell like up dog!” and so on, the voices and words overlap and blend together, right?” she looked at him to see if he was following her rambling. Her brain wouldn’t stop, she reached for the bottle again and just clutched it, as if she let go she’d float away.

“Well, there are little moments of silence, among that chaos and the noise.” She looked down at her lap, her hair falling down and hiding her face. “That's where I exist,” she admitted with a bitter laugh. “I’m here, but I’m just a set-piece. If I stop moving, I’m forgotten.” she reached up and pushed the hair out of her face, looking up at the stars that dotted the sky. “Perhaps this is my life now,” she said thoughtfully, “just existing enough to keep from being completely lost.” She let the words settle in the dark, the tide punctuating the sentence as needed. She raised the bottle and took a sip.
