I understand the whole honor and comradery thing, but the guys at top just see you as expendable. People in the military get taken advantage of all the time, and for what?

No one likes our country? Most of it's citizens don't? I believe more than three fourths of the citizens love this country. I wouldn't say that most don't like it. They may not like the wars we start, or the wars we are involved in, but they love this country because of the vast opportunities they can take. I could care less if they do. We are expendable, even civilians are. At least I'll be able to hold the gun if shit happens where everyone is used as a pawn. Of course they get used. They sign a contract allowing them to lol. 

Even if some people think the army is a bad thing, you havent really thought about the civilians in other countrys Alesia. The army saves lives.

Getting paid to help people is a resonable offer even if there is the chance of getting killed.

I wouldnt like to think what terrorist could and maybe would do if the Army from any country wasnt keeping them at bay

I know a 5 people who have joined in recent days war and 2 came back in a casket they hit a road side bomb 1 came back and had 24 surgerys after also hitting a road side bomb and barely survived he is living a normal life now but for 2 and a half years he had surgerys every month he has metal plates all through his body. and I know 1 who can back with all kinds of mental probelms and killed himself and his family. and the last guy had to kill a lot of ppl to get out of a bad situation and after it all he is ok. but i disagree with some of the other ppl and being scared of death. there are something u need to be afarid in tht line of work but thts not one 4 of the 5 tht went were scared of it and the one who came out untouched was the one who wasnt. but im not going to tell you to join or not to join im only going to tell you im joining the United States army because i feel its my responablility because all my family has either joined the army joined a gang both or is working a dead end job and im already in a gang in real life so now im going to join the army also so i wish you the best of luck in which ever decision u make.

No dude. The military wasn't made to protect people in other countries. It was made to protect people of their OWN country, and KILL other people.

You won't be helping anybody doing that. Just hurting more people. What life is the US army saving? They are ordered to kill to "fight terrorism". Seems like taking lives to me.

But that's besides the point. Do what you want. I don't know what the Royal army is like so it's not a good comparison I suppose.

If anything take into consideration the horrible things you will have to do as well as the "good" like protecting people like you said.

I think that the armys do help there own country but from what I have heard there is always Americans, English and other nationalitys fighting with each other.

When there over in a foreign country they are fighting for the same cause so it works out for the better.

I also joined the infantry 5 years ago (royal anglian regiment) as a private soldier. In that time I have done 2 fighting tours of Afghanistan. Do I enjoy my job? Not any more... Would I change my decision? Hell no!

If you want to join the army, do it! Don't listen to people's cock and bull stories who clearly have no idea what our job entails. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.

I would suggest going to college first though, and not joining the army at the age of 16. If you join the army at 16 you cant leave until your 22nd birthday, if you join after you're 18 you need only serve 4 years and 3 months. If you do 2 years of college and get the UCAS points/standard required to go to university, you then have the option to go to university as soon as you leave the army, which is not a bad path to take.

Feel free to interrogate me further on the subject, if there are any questions you have about it, I probably have the answer.

Some of the comments you're receiving are pretty sick Hickey. I'm working on my 5th year serving in the USAF. I have been stationed most of my career with Army personnel and made 2 trips to Afghanistan with them. I have 3 cousins that are enlisted in the US Army as well.

The benefits are unmatched. The pay is decent. The job security rocks. We get 30 days of paid leave, and all federal holidays off each year. I work with and learn technology I never would have dreamed of touching. Various IT certifications/experience coupled with a valuable security clearance = golden if I were to ever decide to get out. 

I say go for it. You will pick your job before you sign your contract - ensure it's in your enlistment paperwork!! Do NOT join without a plan for the future. I tell kids all the time that are so Hoorah Army or Marines and want to be infantry - what are you going to do after those 4 years? You going to get out and work at Sears with all that shoot-em-up experience? Do yourself a favor and find something that can transition over to the civilian world in case the military lifestyle is not for you.

I will say there is a lot of ingorance in this thread and you should take the contents of it with a grain of salt.  Do you have any specific questions?

I always wanted to go to the army and I think I will stay in it. The Irish army isnt taking on any recruits because there is too many people in the army. 

So during my 4 years in the Royal Irish I think I will get a trade and just keep progresssing as the time goes on. I dont know whether to stay there or leave after the 4 years. My hope was to go to the Irish army after the royal Irish if they are recruting. Maybe I'll be able to get in easier. 

If the army life isnt for me then I will probably use the trade I gained in the army or get a electrician trade off my brother or become a music teacher.

Is it really a 24/7 job?

The one thing I have the hardest time explaining to friends and family, is being in the military can be very similar to having a regular job. It all depends on what you do really. 

My typical day? I wake up and get dressed in the uniform. Depending on the day of the week, we may have some sort of Physical Training to do. I drive myself to work, sit my ass in a computer chair and work my 9 hours. Some days I work more, some days I work less. Just because you aren't overseas does not mean you are doing nothing. Even those stationed stateside have missions.  

When they say it's a 24/7 job, they mean you must be ready/willing to work at any given hour on any given day. When I was in Afghanistan, I worked 13 hour shifts, 7 days a week for 4 months straight. I have also been called in to work on a Saturday morning at 9am, or a Friday night at 9pm. Also, your actions off-duty can still have an adverse affect on your career. 

Military.com is a good place to start doing research if your interested. I like to think MOST recruiters are honest people, but their job is to get you to join. Military.com has a pretty decent forum community who help folks like you with questions every day. Posting there and reading the questions of others will allow you to get an idea of the military lifestyle without feeling pressured sitting in a recruiters office in the mall.
