Both shepherds and cottage pies should be covered with mash. Plain non-hipster mash with no funky, unnecessary additions.

Fruit should be served with either shepherds or cottage pies ONLY as a dessert afterwards and with a generous helping of delicious, thick custard. 

Having fruit in a shepards pie has to be one of the worst things I have ever heard. A good shepherds pie with a bunch of peas on the side reminds me of Sunday evenings. I would finish the meal, go upstairs, play on the PC and dread the fact that school was tomorrow.

I've just remembered that one of my daughters said she didn't like shepherd's pie, so next time we had it we told her it was cottage pie, and she said it was lovely! Obviously we still remind her of this 10 years later.

That eerily sounds like something I did with my brother. He has this unfounded hatred of lamb, so I made shepards pie and told him it was cottage pie with beef. He ate it up and said it was lovely. I still haven't told him it was shepards pie.

I love a good shepherd's pie. Mine is usually ground steak, carrots & sweetcorn topped with mash then mature cheddar.

Sometimes I'll make Mexican mashup. Pork mince, chorizo, spicy mayo in the mash & Mexicana cheese on top.

The person to speak to on this would be someone like Heston. Give us the new fangled fashions associated with both shepherds and cottage pie. I’m betting on mashed potato bricks on the cottage pie or sums such caper.

I so am going to give that a go! It goes against everything I have known growing up etc so feels slightly rebellious too but what a great combo. We so need a MR non traditional dishes online cook book thing!!! The weird and wonderful...people and dishes that is!!! :)
