12 Steps to 12th Street Started by: Nanno on Jul 05, '21 19:24

Two hours.

Two hours was all it took for Nanno's life to turn completely upside down. Two hours ago, she was living a relatively normal life in Los Angeles -- a struggling actress tending bar and working odd jobs to make ends meet. The only unordinary thing about her was the fact that despite her efforts, she can never find out who her parents were -- she was left in an orphanage as a baby and even after countless visits and calls, they can never give her an answer as to who her mother was.

It seemed like the nuns always knew something though... they always had this look in their eye -- fear, maybe -- but never gave anything away. At some point, Nanno just stopped trying; if her mother didn't want anything to do with her, then she wasn't going to push it. It wasn't her loss anyway and she can live not knowing where she came from as long as she knew where she wanted to be.

This all changed when she heard a knock on her door right before she was going to bed. Knock might be an understatement -- pounding would be the more accurate term, making the door creak against its hinges. Hesitantly, she got up, went to the kitchen to pick up a frying pan to repurpose as a weapon before carefully opening the door to find... no one. Whoever was so adamant to get into her apartment mere moments ago was now gone... Nanno chalked it up to the neighborhood kids and was about to go back to sleep when a box on the floor caught her eye just before she shut the door.

Picking it up curiously and bringing it inside, she quickly opened it up to find money. So much money. More money than she's ever seen in her entire life. It was an entire box just full of 100 dollar bills, with a singular note sitting on top with the words "I love you, Nanno" written in beautiful cursive above a word that made her heart race -- "Mom".

So many thoughts raced through her head, but the first thing she did was run to her window trying to catch a glimpse of the man who left the box for her. Seeing a dark figure exit the apartment complex, Nanno put on a coat over her pajamas, got her keys, and darted outside, watching the mysterious man get into a car. She wasn't sure if this was actually the guy who left her the box, but she had to try. Following the car, Nanno wondered if today was the day she was finally going to meet her mother. If today was the day she was going to get answers about her past..

The car pulled up at The Diamond Dagger Social Club, and Nanno parked her car right behind his. She followed him inside and sat at a table nearby, where she spotted him saying hello to two other men who were telling stories about a woman named Velvet? Maybe that was her mother? She kept her head low and ears open, listening in to the stories when all hell broke loose and gunfire was everywhere. What the hell did she get herself into?

Frozen and unable to think, she remained seated while everyone either ran for their lives or unholstered their gun. She stuck out like a sore thumb, unmoving, until the man she followed to the bar grabbed her by the elbow and pulled her underneath a table. "What the hell are you doing here, Nanno? You shouldn't be here. God, Velvet's gonna rise from the dead and kill me."

It took her a few moments to realise what was happening and respond. "Is Velvet... is Velvet my mother?"

"What? No. Your mother is--" right before she watched a bullet go straight through the man's chest.

That woke Nanno up. Watching the life drain from his eyes, she had to make a decision. "Tell me who my mother is, please --"

"Kaya, dead now too. Find Wayne in Detroit, he'll know more."

Nanno wanted to stay and help the man out but when the gunshots stopped, the smell of charred wood started filling the room... shit. She had to get out of there quickly. Keeping low, she crawled past dead bodies and out the door, stopping to take a few deep breaths of clean air before trying to stand back up. She was on her way back to her car when she heard a groan nearby -- a man, passed out covered in blood -- Arapaho. It was the same man who she heard talking about Velvet inside the bar, and it seems he's the only one who survived while his friend did not.

Against her better judgment, she dragged him by his arms and into the backseat of her car before driving. Nanno figured she can interrogate him about Velvet later and if he didn't know anything, well at least he owed her for saving his life. For now, she just needed to distance herself from whatever the fuck just happened in that bar. She didn't even realise where she was going until she was on the highway, when she realised her subconscious mind was taking her...

They were on their way to Detroit.

Arapaho finally regained consciousness after the fire, his lungs were still full of smoke and most likely damaged in an irreversable way..

As he began to get his bearings back to what was left of life, he felt the vibrations from the road below...he was in a car...he had no idea how he got there...and he certainly didn't fucking know who the driver was. As he began to get his bearings of the surrounding area the driver was just pulling off the highway and into a quiet neighbourhood, the engine was turned off and Nanno turned around to look him straight in the eyes..

Arapaho once again thought his life had turned full circle, he was again stuck in a situation through no fault of his own..bad shit just keeps happening to him. The blood stained tears were still wet on his face through the loss of 'Baby Face' and now he found himself stuck in a potentially very awkward situation. Was this female a saint, or a sinner? Who was she? Who did she work for? What could she possibly want from him, Arapaho had only been in Downtown LA for a short period and already he'd heard of Godmother Velvet losing the City through rogue actions, a glorious ablaze in The Diamond Dagger Social Club...and lastly the attack that ended the life of his own friend 'Baby Face.'

Nonetheless, Arapaho took in a deep breath and cleared his throat before saying: "Miss; forgive me, but I have no idea who you are, where you come from or where the hell I am. What do you want from me?"
