Oranges Groves and New Beginnings Started by: Favara on Jul 31, '11 21:10

As he wandered through his uncle's modest farmland in the beautiful surroundings that was Rosarno, he brushed his rough hands across the beautiful orange groves. As he did this he wondered what life could've been, how simple it would've been, if he had accepted that there was such injustice in this world, and that he was powerless to stop it.

His fathers illustrious words of, "Some people are born to rule, and some to be ruled" rushed through his mind, his father had imparted these words with his son just before he was taken away by a band of Mafiosi who were to execute him for conspiring against the local Mafia chieftain.

That was the reason why he his mother and his elder brother had to flee his home town of Favara in Sicily and find peace with his Uncle in Reggio Di Calabria.

It seemed that his fathers words had not had the desired effect, he did not believe that he was so utterly powerless against the evil forces that be, if he did, he would not have viciously murdered the magistrate that had his brother hung for crimes that he had not committed.

That one moment of blind fury and vengeance had sealed his fate in his beloved country, he had realised that because of this he could no longer remain here and must leave his home and what was left of his family and never return.

He knelt beside the masses of orange groves and placed his hand in the soil that gave life to these oranges, gave life to all things in his homeland. He gathered some in his palm and stared at it, wondering if he'd even cast a gaze on it's like again. He let it slowly drain from his hand and arose, a final glance at this picturesque view made his heart ache intensely. He turned his back on it and headed for his uncle's small but luxurious villa that commanded the land around it.

----------------------------------------------------------

As he finally reached the villa after what had felt like hours walking he saw that a horse driven carriage that was unknown to him pulled up outside the villa.

He feared the worst and suddenly reached for his revolver that was concealed in his jacket, but he came to his senses and reasoned that if it was the carabinieri, he'd already be in chains and on his way to a jail cell awaiting deaths visit.

As he entered the villa he saw his mother grieving for the death of one of her sons and the exile of another. He moved to comfort her but his path was suddenly blocked by a giant of a man that dominated the whole room with his presence.

This stranger was dressed very well, very well indeed compared to the dirt poor farmers that inhabited this part of the "Boot", he looked taken care of as well, his skin was soft and pampered, not rough like that of a humble peasant, there was something unusual about this man, something not quite right. The man raised his giant hand and offered it in greeting to the young fugitive.

"Giuseppe?" His voiced boomed.

"Yes, I am Giuseppe, Giuseppe Favara!" The young man sounded as if to compare somewhat to the mountain of a man.

The huge man straightened himself out and introduced himself.

"My name is Alberto Pazziani, I'm a dear friend of your uncle's, and of your father's. I will help you, as a matter of honour to your family."

Alberto gestured to the door that Giuseppe has just come through, but he was not ready to be ushered out so quickly to an uncertain future.

He barged past the giant, who obliged, and approached his weeping mother, but he could only muster up a weak "Goodbye" from his crackling voice. He took his few belongings from his Uncle, who had already finished packing for him in his time of need.

Giuseppe placed a hand on his Uncle's shoulder.

"Thank you for all you have done, I'm forever indebted to you. I know now that I can never return, but I know that you will care for my mother."

They shared a slight nod and a moment of understanding of what the other had done existed between the two men. Giuseppe then took his inevitable leave and rushed out of the villa and into the cold night and carriage that was to take him to sanctuary and peace at last.

----------------------------------------------------------

The darkness had descended quickly over Calabria. Giuseppe was happy at first, it would aid his escape from the rotten system, but he was also saddened that the last time he would ever lay eyes on his home would be in the darkness, running away, like a common thief. He felt cowardly.

Giuseppe nervously asked Alberto as to where he would go, where he would from now on live.

"You are to go to America." Alberto announced.

"I have family there, they will take you in. You'll be fine, you've no reason to worry any more".

He was to make for Gioia Tauro, the port city of Calabria, and then eventually to America as Alberto had informed him, the supposed land of the free and home of the brave. But his start out in life had made him cynical and Giuseppe imagined that it would be no different from Sicilia or Calabria, no different at all.

Another land of unrivalled corruption, greed and murderous ambition. Giuseppe Favara would feel well at home.
