Trouble in Paradise Started by: Lauren on Oct 29, '21 19:15

During the Great Depression, so many people left the workforce, and so few people came back after the fact that there were a lot of open positions for construction workers to advance in the industry, women included. The women that stayed behind in the workforce were able to move up quickly, making more pay, and having control over more important positions. This led to Lauren receiving an offer as a construction foreman, in the Summerlin Industrial Zone, managing a project to build the first ever high-rise buildings in all of Summerlin.

Despite the fact that Lauren had obtained a job that would have been impossible for a woman to obtain just ten years ago, things were not all peachy. Working on a construction site as a foreman - or should it said to be forewoman, was absolute hell. After the Depression, most of the people who did come back into the workforce were young, inexperienced men. Since the workforce was lacking workers to fill so many important jobs, these young adults were being given the responsibility of controlling cranes, or managing small groups of men and women, even though they had never personally worked before.

Lauren spent her entire day practically barking orders under the Nevada sun. Being forced to stand in one place the entire day, water was scarce and food was even more scarce. The company that she worked for was supposed to be giving their employees two fifteen-minute breaks a day, but this was a rule that was not actively enforced. The only breaks that she - or anybody else in her construction crew received - occurred when a piece of machinery broke down, or somebody that was working on the site was injured. Injuries, however, were common, and not few, and not far in between, as safety regulations were a thing of the future. It wasn't uncommon for men to jump from one steel beam being carried by a crane's hook, onto another, or onto another part of the building, to cut time.

Lauren would work between eight and ten hours every day, in the middle of the scorching heat. She made enough money, sure, but there wasn't much to spend it on. She had already placed a down payment on her home and paid off her car, and there weren't very many amenities in Las Vegas. She herself lived in Paradise, having to drive from Paradise to Summerlin every day to work on the site.

It was about 7PM, and Lauren was sitting out on a park bench on the side of the street, which was about a half of a mile or so away from her home. She had a lit cigarette in between her index finger, and her middle finger, resting the arm that held the cigarette on the back of the bench. She knew she would have to go home soon, but she was dreading every second of just thinking about that moment, because as soon as she went home, there would be nothing to do except to go to sleep, and when she woke up, she would have to get dressed, and go to work. Thinking about work was driving her insane, and there wasn't much that she could do to change her situation. The pay was much too great for her to just accept a lesser job. If she took a lower-paying job, she would still make enough money to survive, but only just.
