Feb 21 1939 01:39 hours.
Revenant is walking the streets of Manhattan. His mind is wandering. He was there on some crew business and had the misfortune of seeing the largest American Nazi rally to date. Watching with disgust from the streets outside he shook his head. His people, the Armenian Christians had been segregated in much the same ways Hitler was dehumanizing the Jewish people now. Eventually that wasn't enough and the Ottomans began to systematically kill them all. Revenant saw the future of what would be called the holocaust playing out before his eyes. His wandering mind took him back to his youth.
Vrezhkndir, (V-rez-kun-dish) The Revenant, the walking ghost, the one who returned. The word echoed in his mind. What was he doing? Has he gone totally mad? The image of a pile of murdered children their dead cloudy eyes wide and transfixed in their last horrible moment for all eternity came to mind. Yes he agreed with himself, in a mad world I have found my sanity
.
It was a crisp January evening in Eleskirt, Turkey 1916 and he slipped silently along the roadside. The industrial section, his goal was in sight. In a warehouse now used as temporary holding for, well they were not even called people anymore but "items". The Turks had been rounding up anyone of Armenian heritage especially Christians. The souls held in this warehouse had been led on a death march, beaten, robbed, assaulted even raped along the way. Now on a final stop over as they prepared for a march South into the desert and "exile" they would be prodded on until they collapsed and were left to die.
He was far into Turkish land, enemy territory he corrected himself for there was no doubt if he was discovered he would be shot as a spy. Creeping along the outer perimeter fence he prayed to Saint Gregory the illuminator.
"Blessed Saint Gregory light my way, blind my enemies and illuminate my thoughts and deeds tonight."
Quick and silent he dispatched the 2 nodding guards, the only ones left on post. Marching a column of prisoners all day was tiring work and the rest of the troop fell quickly asleep in a barrack building. One quick stop at a small office building where the leaders had been entertaining some local harlots they had long ago finished and loud snoring came from inside. He slipped in and one by one dispatched them with his blade. With determination he pulled out 2 wine bottles stashed inside his coat. Creeping along in shadows he stops just outside the door to the enlisted men's barracks. He stood the bottles on the ground, uncorked them, stuffed a rag inside, lit it and tossed them inside. The loud WOOSH and bright light that followed when the benzine inside was released from the shattered bottles was not nearly as satisfying as the screams that followed. Two men managed to find the door and rushing out were shot.
As he is scouting the complex making sure every enemy is dead hes hit from behind by someone who makes no sound as he moves. Thrown to the ground and pummeled he finally gets a leg between them. Kicking as hard as he can he only gains a small breathing space and glimpse of his attacker. And the smell! Like a goat that lives in a dump, like,
His eyes widen, like a Karkanxholl!! Revenant has lived many adventures and in different incarnations even has memories of living in other times. He has become very familiar with creatures the world considers to be mythical. He once loved a Vampiric Baroness and helped save her clan and perhaps the world from one of the most despised and evil groups of undead. Consuming the blood of the innocent causes the drinker to sweat a terrible odor. The stink of corruption. This thing smells worse than the Lycanian Warload Kratos.
As one hand grasps a handful of Revenants hair with inhuman strength another slashes at his chest ripping his shirt. Suddenly it screams and releases Revenant. He sees a distorted figure dressed in a Turkish Corporals uniform. Glowing embers are floating down from 3 of his fingertips as it screams at Revenant with rage and fear. Looking down at his chest there are 4 red lines going across his chest and weeping his lifeblood already. Only one goes all the way across the other 3 end at the Cross of Feowyr hanging from his neck. Its glowing a fiery blue that the Karkanxholl is shielding his eyes from.
"Don't like that do you? I would not think so." Revenant smiles. Made from 5 of the 30 pieces of silver Judas got for betraying Christ and the purple corundum he has been told is the very essence of creation its what brings his spirit back into a new entity every time Revenant has died. Even regenerating non lethal damage its the light that cuts through the darkness of all evil.
The Karkanxholl spits out a foul curse then howls as the cross burns even brighter. Infused with its energy and with his wounds already healed before the few drops of his blood that spilled had even dried Revenant rises to his feet. Pulling a special dagger from his boot Revenant grins.
"Time for you to meet YOUR maker. He's waiting for you in a lake of fire." Revenant says but before the words can come out the creature is gone.
After a thorough search to make sure this creature was really gone he walked over to the main building and flung the door open wide. Tossing a set of keys he stole from the captains body he shouted.
"Saint Gregory shines his light through the darkest night"
With that shouts of jubilation echo through the building and he encourages everyone into a trio of large trucks parked nearby. He leads the convoy north towards Russian territory and relative safety. Beaming in a grin that spread ear to ear the small part of childhood left in this 16 year old man was proud of how well this game of war turned out tonight.
Suddenly he's shaken out of his dreaming. Screams are coming from around the corner. He sprints to the end of the block turning it to see a group of 8 Silvershirts are attacking a family and vandalizing the Hudson Yards Synagogue. A man is laying on the sidewalk unconscious and his 2 daughters are being assaulted while their mother is being beaten by a particularly large man in a Captains uniform of the American/German league Three of the group turn their heads to Revenant as he rounds the corner then advance at him.
Smiling he says "You goons should have stayed at the garden with every cop in the city keeping you safe" And reaching into his inner jacket pocket he slips a brass knuckle over his right hand.
Their reply's were not fit for Revenants mind to process into the actual words but the most ignorant, racist, and intolerant slurs you can imagine suffice to describe it. Grinning widely Revenant is going to enjoy this. As he advances he begins to chant.
"St Michael the Archangel. Defend us in battle"
He lunges at the lead guy hitting him in the bottom of his sternum and knocking the wind out of him. He spins on his right foot and with his left leg he takes the legs out from under the other 2. Quickly grabbing one mans head and slamming it into the pavement he's back on his feet as the 3rd guy regains his. The commotion attracts the attention of the others save the Captain. Two more goons turn to charge at Revenant.
"Be our protector against the wickedness and the sins of evil"
With a flurry of punches punctuated with a kick to the abdomen Revenant knocks the last of the first wave to the ground. He groans and lays there heaving loudly trying to catch his breath through the torrent of blood coming from his nose. Revenant begins to sprint tward the next 2 as the rest of the group turn their attention on him. Except the captain who is on top of the mother.
He, hes biting her neck? Revenant thought with confusion then continuing to chant the mantra he learned long ago.
"May God rebuke him, we humbly pray"
As the next two assailants reach him he feints back then lunging forward he bangs their heads together with a sickening thud that turn both men into rag dolls that collapse immediately.
"And you the prince of the heavenly host. With the power of God, cast into hell. Satan."
When the word God is uttered the Captain shrieks in pain and stands up. Turning to Revenant with eyes blazing in hate they quickly widen in fear at the same time Revenant notices the missing fingertips on its hand and recognizes who it is. The Karkanxholl he met so long ago. The remaining Silvershirts pause and look back at their leader who's features are quickly distorting to a monstrous visage. They look at each other, their leader again and then at the 5 men laying broken on the ground around Revenant and they turn to run.
"And all the evil spirits who roam upon the earth seeking ruin of souls. Amen"
And with that the Cross of Fewoyr bursts into life shining that pure blue fire. The Karkanxholl squints then charges Revenant who has pulled the dagger from his ankle holster. An ancient blade rumored to have been used by Solomon to bind several demons. Its been blessed by countless Saints. It was carried by knights, kings and even commoners back and forth through the crusades. A holy relic claimed by the Templars. It held a place of honor in the Church of St Gregory until Revenant rescued it days before the Ottomans destroyed everything.
The Karkanxholl notices it and hesitates. Before it can escape Revenant speaks a spell of binding holding this evil creature in this area. Looking Revenant in the eyes it growls out a vile curse in a tongue Revenant doesn't know and charges. Taking a step back as if to set his defensive stance he suddenly takes a quick step forward and flings the knife at the Karkanxholl. As if guided by the hand of God the blade arcs and burys itself into the chest of the beast. It drops like a bag of clothes that never had life in it and begins to smoulder. The features of the Karkanxholl melting away into a very old, ugly and hateful Ottoman. He coughs and spits words with blood at Revenant.
"We will meet on the last day human." And with a groan he dies.
"Yes, the final judgment. I will be testifying against you" And retrieving his dagger he bends down to check the male victim as his daughters do the same with loud sobs. He is beyond saving, turning to the mother he realizes with horror that the Karkanxholl had fed on her. Telling the girls to leave now before more attackers come he promises he will save their mother. Only when they are out of sight does he let a single tear fall down his cheek. Plunging the blade into her chest he saves her from becoming an undead. The chances that she would be benevolent are high but the curse of this eternal life Revenant would not wish on anyone. With a final prayer he walks away as the sound of sirens approach. He only stops briefly at the door to the Synagogue. Jewish custom forbids handling money on the Sabbath so its common for tithes to be dropped through the mail slot. Revenant pulls out 3 special coins from a small pouch he carries. Usually used to fund and support the work of his neighborhood church the gold Templar coins are worth tens of thousands of dollars each.
Dropping the first coin into the slot it hits the floor with a heavy thud. "One for the Levites"
Then the second "The second for the temple."
And the last coin before fading into the night as police cars reach the scene "The third one for the poor and sick."
As he puts enough distance between him and the scene Revenant muses over what he saw. He has met The Mother of us all. He knows the voice in everyone's heart that tells them right from wrong is the truth about the universe. That every religion through time has a inspiration from that voice as well as interpretations of people who thought they were right. The single biggest flaw in humanity that keeps them from Her is the intolerance and hate they show to others that believe differently. Revenant has dedicated his life to protecting the weak from abuse and destruction by the forces of evil. Hitler isn't the first or the worst but Revenant has made the decision that he needs to do more to stop him while he can before this infectious madness he has brought into the world burns it up.
