It be nice if there was a map showing who territory is who's and be nice to buy business from the map that could generate money for the player businesses like speakeasy's and casino's, mansions or apartments or villa's maybe some nightclubs.

As for generating income - we have casinos already. People can tip on BD threads if they like, which will give you more money. Aside from that I don't really see a point.

I like the idea of homes/apartments or if you are out of town you have mafia hotels.

Having different levels of residence and if your in your home district based on the quality of your residence gives you a percent increase in your defense when you are offline in the game.  The higher the quality of residence the more it cost you per week, you pay in advance.  If you fail to have the money out on the street you go with base protection when offline.  This gives people another thing to spend money on and another reason to continue to make money in the game.  You can do the same when people are out of there city have them go to a variety of different hotels. 

In fact you could even have the hotels be run and controlled by players that live in the city.  They can make and lose money based on how many people use the place in the city over the week.  The various levels would cost them so much a week and they make so much per night someone stays.   Again staying adds a Defense bonus and should greatly increase the chance of being noticed if you take action against any staying there.

I think doing something along these lines would add a great deal to the game.
