It was an early morning in July when I awoke to a loud pounding on my front door. Being awakened from a dead sleep would put almost anyone into panic mode. So I quickly got dressed, walked down the staircase, and peeked through the glass to see who was waking me up in the middle of the night. Being your average civilian in upper New York you knew that anything was possible. Though I was a young man at the time, twenty-four to be exact I will never forget the news that reached me.

After looking through the glass I recognized the men as some of my fathers co-workers or as he liked to call them his “associates”. My father kept his work extremely private, though you could only cover up so much from a boy that had just recently reached adulthood. There is no telling how much my mother knew about my fathers work, but she did a damn good job keeping me in the dark about it all.

Turning on the porch light, I opened the door and greeted the men after wiping the crud out of my eyes. Even though the two men addressed me in a friendly manner I knew that this had something to do with my father. Since ma had passed away a few years back from a fatal drive by shooting into a restaurant my father has been a very busy man. Rarely at home, I was the one to take care of the house, he was always working long hours at work. I assumed he was leading a double life, but clearly I had no idea.

Leading the men into the living quarters one held a small box in his hands. Gifts at this time of the morning were definitely out of the question. My curiosity grew with every second why these men were there in my home and the reasoning behind it. Without any words spoken the two men sat down on a couch across from me and set this box in front of me. Still a little confused about the entire matter I asked the men to explain them waking me up to open a box? The man holding the box cleared his throat and asked me to please open the box it would explain why they were intruding without any notice.

Still half asleep I picked up the box off the table in front of me and proceeded to look inside. After popping to top off the box and glanced inside to find a gold plated .45 colt pistol, a stack of cash, and an envelope. Knowing that the envelope would have the answers as to why these men were here I picked it up right away. Using my letter opener to tear it open I pulled out a letter with exquisite penmanship. Right away I unfolded the letter and began to read it to myself.

“Dear George Jr,

As your father I want you to know that I always had you in my mind and heart. Watching you grow up into a young man was more then I could ever ask for. After your mother passed I did the best I could for both of us, even though that meant missing out on a lot of time with you. With receiving this letter I have passed on to the after life. I am in a better place now and I will be with you forever.

I’m sure your confused about a lot of things right now I would like to make a few of them clearer. If you hadn’t figured it our by now I’m sure you were hot on my trail, you were my son and I expected that you would eventually catch on. I was a member of an elite organized crime syndicate. Your mothers death was meant for myself when it had happen and it tore me apart inside losing her. Being out to dinner with her catching a bullet that was meant for me. I began focusing all of my time on finding the person who had murdered your mother and my love. In the weeks to come I would find a name behind his face and buried him shortly after. The gun the came with this letter is the piece I used to take that man down and I ask that you carry with you for the rest of your life. Your mother and I will not die in vein as we both worked hard to make sure you had a chance to live a free life.

From father to son, your mother would turn in her grave if she knew what I was about to ask of you. Your a smart kid, you got lots of talent. Don’t let it go to waste champ, I set you up with thirty-five thousand dollars to get everything started. It’s a lot to take in at once, but its going to be the best life that you can have during times like these. The men that sit before you are my most trusted. If you decide to follow the opportunity given to you, then these men will make sure that you are taken care of and have a chance to be as successful as you are determined to be. You will never know how much we cared about you until you get a chance to see first hand what we did to protect you.

Farewell my son were always with you,

George Jung.”

Looking up at the two men in front of me I wiped the single tear from my eye. Looking into the box and picking up the gun that had taken care of my mothers murderer I found pride in holding it. My father didn’t explain his death, but that was obvious to me after finding out that my parents were members of the mafia. My future was at a fork in the road, continue the life as an everyday business man or leap into an exciting life of fast cars and even faster women.

Though I had no idea what I was getting into. I knew my decision was made when my father asked of me, his only son to continue his bloodline. I nodded to the two men and told them that I was in. They both smiled at each other and we all stood up to shake hands. After the men shared a few words with me about my father and how proud they were to serve with him. They said that I would receive a phone call in the morning and that we would proceed further from there. I knew I had made the right decision and I would dedicate my new life to the path my father had paved for me.

Batman is stalking a tall building in St.Louis near a alley where BostonGeorge is speaking with leaders from diffrent cities and other curious spectators listening to every word of his story of his Father and Mother. After a few moments of listening to his story I decide to drop down from the building trying to get closer to the group to hear how he got started. BostonGeroge notices my curiosity and nods I reply with a friendly smile and find a nice spot in the alley to lean up against while lighting up a cigar still listening to the man get farther and more into his speach. After several minutes later BostonGeorge is making the closing of his story. I wait until he is finished before walking up to the man to show my deepest respects to his fallen Mother and Father.

Well Sir I have to say its an honor to be working for you in the city of St.Louis, I give you my condolences. From the sound of it your Father was a great man who lead a good life and wished to give you the same if not a better life than he once had. I am happy to hear your Father was able to avenge your mother and find the bastard who did it and kick him to his grave. Your dad would be proud to see you have been given the nod to start your own family in another city and become Godfather. This was a excelent story and I wish to hear many more in the future.

Takes a few more drags off his cigar and exhales before saluting you and taking his leave back to his head quarters for a night of drinking with the family.
