HamHam scurried down the shiny chrome pole in her newly remodeled office and set her bare feet down on the raw pine flooring.  With a deep sigh she looked around and nodded.  Yes, this would do.  She had recently been living uptown in a much nice apartment, but the management changed and with it came an eviction notice.  It was barely a week since she'd been served and she had to scramble to make enough to rent this new space, but somehow she had managed.  Now she had this whole space to herself and a night to kill.  She decided to run a few laps. After a rigorous workout she headed to the small open plan kitchen and got a few sips of water.  Then she curled up on a cushion and decided to flip through the pages of the latest glamour magazine.  She was just about to get ready for bed when the doorbell rang.  HamHam slipped on a pair of slippers and opened the door. 

"Hello?"

“Just be cool.”

 Being a door to door salesman wasn’t easy. Back in the 40’s the trade was easy and anyone could buy chocolates or vacuums but nowadays one had to offer specialty items just to keep competitive. He sighed, squinting at the address on the crumpled piece of paper. Yep, this was the place. He rang the bell and waited, hearing a strange scrabbling coming from inside the apartment. Maybe there was a dog but it sounded big and there was no barking. He glanced at his watch and went to ring the bell again when the door flung open. There stood a woman clutching a scanty rob about her and preening her…hair which was tied up in tiny blue bows. He stared open mouthed for a moment before starting in on his spiel in rapid fashion.

”good afternoon ma’am, I’m here to tell you about our salted nuts. Yes ma’am finest nuts you’ll find around. We source ours from locally grown seasonal trees. We shell ‘em, roast ‘em, and salt ‘em in house. We also offer premier dried fruits and vegetables using our new fangled deeehydrator method. Y’see before us one had to use the sun. If it was storming or cloudy, you just couldn’t dry your fruit properly and we’re prone to spoilage but we’ve patented a machine that dries produce in no time and delivers shelf stable fruits and veggies to your door.” 
 

He displayed the pamphlet to her and in turn she waved him inside, gesturing to the seating arrangements. He sat down and she offered some water, handing him a plastic bottle before lounging on a rustic wooden bench. 

HamHam was thrilled it was a salesman and not her landlord.  That stiff was always ruining her fun and she tried to stay out of his way as often as possible.  

"Well I'll be!  I just love stuffing my cheeks with nuts!  Can't get enough of them to be honest!  Why don't you come in and sit while I browse this brochure of yours?"  She flung open the door and offered the man a seat on her favorite cushion and got him some of her water.  Then she sprawled out on her rough hewn log sofa and opened the pamphlet. After several moments of heavy silence she perked up, her nose practically twitching in delight. 

"Oh peanuts!  I sure do love those!" She flipped another page.  "Well for heaven's sake!  Sunflower seeds?  Why didn't you lead with that mister?  I'll take three sacks!"  She bounced up from the uncomfortable looking seat and scrambled off to get her pocket book, her toenails scratching at the floor.  The salesman looked piqued when she returned. She looked around for the source of discomfort and saw him glancing nervously at her feet.  

"Oh golly, they have gotten a bit long haven't they.  I need to ch-uh trim them soon!"  She let out a high pitched nervous giggle and brandished her checkbook at the man like a knife.  "So, how much for you seed then?"
