Frank sits down with his pen and some paper and begins to write Dear Mama and Papa, I am writing you this letter to let you know that I have made it to the America. I know you were worried for the long voyage but despite rough seas, your son has made it. The statue of the beautiful lady was more amazing than the pictures on the post cards we had received from Vincenzo! Though I won’t lie, this America is not as I expected from Vincenzo’s letters home. It is much more dirty and rough than I imagined. Don’t worry Mama, not any more rough than the streets of home. Your son is doing well. I was able to find Vincenzo! Though it took some time. I will admit Mama I went a few days without a good meal but the voyage across the water prepared me for that. The streets here in America are much harder to navigate and many of the younger Italians like me have lost their native tongue. I am not so good at the language here. I have learned a few new words from the shouts of those I’ve encountered. Like “Get the hell out of here!” And “Are you an idiot?”. I am not as sure as to what the last one means but I have figured out pretty quick that the first one is not so good. Vincenzo has set me up for work, I can’t go into details but the work keeps my fingernails clean, mostly. I am already making good money and you would be happy to know, Mama, that I have eaten well since finding Vincenzo. So do not worry. I will write you again soon and I hope you make good use of the money I have sent, America is being kind so far at least from a money standpoint. So papa, don’t be too proud. It is a sons job to help with his Mama and Papa as they get older. I love you both very much, Frank Frank slips a few hundreds into an envelope with the letter and sets off for the post office |
