Frank sits down after a long day in the rackets and removes a piece of paper and a pen from the desk drawer of his bedroom before sitting down to write. Dear Mama and Papa, Things are still going great in America! I have made a lot of new friends. Of course, Vincenzo introduced me to them so I was not able to make them on my own. But you’d be proud of me if you could see how well my friends were doing! Believe it or not almost all of them own automobiles! And not only that but they dress very fashionable for Italian immigrants not even a generation removed from picking grapes or working fields. Vincenzo sends his love and wants you to tell his Mama and Papa that he loves them and knows he should write more. I too have taken up wearing fine suits and looking very well off! Can you believe it? Your boy is making something for himself in the America? I had to meet a friend of Vincenzo’s recently who had done him wrong, I got in a tiny bit of trouble with the authorities but don’t worry, Vincenzo took care of it. Apparently he explained his issues to a person of importance within the system of law here and I was not in trouble long. Oh! And I’ve learned about the Yankees of New York. I can now talk about the baseball with my new friends! Any time they’re talking about the Yankees in the English I know what they’re talking about! Your boy is becoming a regular American like the Fred Astaire from the picture films. I hope all is well back home, I miss my sisters and Mama’s veal. I hope you have used the money I have sent for beautiful things Mama. This money I hope you both do something special for you both. There’s more to come Mama and Papa, your son has found his calling in this land of opportunity. I hope to someday make a home for you here so that both of you and my sisters may be here too. I love you both always, Frank Frank slips a few hundreds into an envelope he had sitting on his desk along with the letter and heads to the post office. |
