Frank slumps into his chair and agonizingly grimaces as he reaches for the desk drawer and pulls it open. He could feel the pain shooting through his aching ribs and chest as he pulled his arm close to him again before composing himself. He managed to muster the strength to again reach out and this time removes a piece of paper and a pen before begrudgingly putting enough force behind his arm to push the drawer back in. Holding a frozen steak to his eye with his non-dominant left hand, he begins to write. Dear Mama and Papa, I read your letter yesterday, I could tell Magdalena did the writing because she called me Frank instead of Frances and I know Mama you would never call me anything but Frances. I am happy to have read that you received the money but am unsure as to what you mean that Don Salvatore’s men took the lamp you bought from the store? Surely you told them that this was because Frank, or Frances for you Mama sent you the money? They know me, there is no reason they should be bothering the two of you. Tell Papa not to worry and there is no reason to seek vendetta. There is more money where that came from and I’m sure you can find an even more beautiful lamp! Just be patient Mama and Papa, before long these envelopes will contain not only my warmest regards from the America and money but will have tickets for each of you to make the journey to me. I only need to make sure I have a place for you ready and things have been a bit tricky with business lately. Do not worry Mama, I am fine. It seems that the shipping and receiving business cousin Vincenzo has brought me into, well, let’s say there is much competition for use of the ports. Hopefully it won’t last much longer but for now you could say that business is a bit cut throat. I’ll be fine though Mama, soon you will have a beautiful new home in the America and we’ll be having dinner as a family again. Hold onto that thought and no matter what, do not let it go. Oh, yeah! I read in the letter how much it made the sisters giggle to hear about the words I’ve learned in the English. So, I wanted to make sure I gave you a new one in this letter as well. The newest word I have learned in the English is fuggetabout it. I don’t have a strong grasp on its meaning but it seems to be used when someone wants to say, eh, no problem? Yes, it is like saying no problem. Americans are very funny indeed! Even those who come from the old country. I have to go now Mama and Papa, much work to be done in ensuring the shipping and receiving business stays in our… companies favor. I love you both always, Frank Frank first sets the frozen meat, now thawed down on the desk before placing down his pen with his other hand and sighing deeply as he gasp’s in pain at his ribs. He carefully folds the letter and places it into an envelope before sliding a few hundreds in and sealing it. Frank stands up, removes a pistol from his nightstand, checks that it’s loaded before inserting it into his coat pocket and stammers toward the door with the letter in hand. |
