Brittney Griner, is a 31,year old Phoenix Mercury player who plays in Russia during the WNBA's off season. She was arrested February 17 at a Moscow airport, a week before Russia invaded Ukraine.

They say she is wrongfully detained.

She’s accused of smuggling less than a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage at an unspecified location under unspecified circumstances from an unidentified person. She bought two cartridges for personal use, which contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil, totaling 0.702 grams,"

Now I don’t know much about cannabis oil but it doesn’t seem like much.

But bottom line she was detained after carrying "illegal drugs that contained narcotic substances" which is punishable by the Russian law.

I think with all this is going on she is in a lot of trouble. They say she might be facing 10 years in a Russian prison.

I haven't followed the case very much but I think there will be an exchange. Viktor Bout for Britney Griner (and a first round draft pick). It's an awful trade but 10 years for a gram doesn't really fit the crime at all. I get it... different country but sheesh

I actually feel sorry and not sorry for Griner at the same time. On one end 2 grams of cannabis is nothing, here in the United States if you're caught by a cop with that amount most cops would just make you pour it out in the grass and step on it at the least...at the most they may give you a ticket. On the other hand every other country is not America and American rules don't apply. I think she should get the same punishment all other Russian citizens get for the same crime. Trading Viktor Bout for Griner is a bad deal because Bout actually has heinous crimes.  

I agree that the laws in other nations are far different then in the States, however she should have been made aware of those laws before going abroad.  She has been made a pond the oil has barely enough strengh to get you high its more of a mild seditive the drugs they have over there is 100 times more potent and the amount she had couldn't be enough to began talking about her selling it.  Nevertheless to go to a nation that is at odds with the states is not a wise move when the issues with Nato and Russia has been going on for decades and the US will not make a trade for her we will not trade for her.  In 1993 a young america boy was beaten with a cane because of his actions which was a law violation in the small country he was in and the US simply wrote a letter of protest.  

Well she has pleaded guilty to smuggling in drugs.  They are hoping for some type of leniency.  With the war and all else going on don't think that's going to happen. I think they might give her a harsh sentence and we will be back to square one.  I pray not for her. 

I would not expect leniency at present sadly, have seen with soldiers held by the luhansk peoples republic which is a proxy of russia, how much they make a show of it, as if to say we can do as we please, and you can't do anything.  Is just about continuing a propaganda war and ego trip at present for Russia and it's proxies.

I have little sympathy for her though as this is what happens when you bring drugs into a country, however miniscule, thailand used to execute their drug offenders, so it could of been worse.     However, anyone having to stay in a Russian prison, isn't gonna have a fun time.

I won't fly over state borders with carts. I know the risks and though I have a medical card and it is one thing that gives me relief to sleep, I suffer through when traveling. That said, I do feel that she is getting a raw deal. The sentence is too harsh. 

I don't get the guilty plea and at the same time stating she had no intentions of breaking any laws. That there will probably get her the maximum sentence of ten years for lying or being stupid. She is not a political prisoner. She got caught. 

Now they are saying it was for medical reasons.  Don't really know how well that's going to go over. 

The problem is for those who say, is medical need, the rules for medecines vary between countries.   Same way it all has to be backed up with paperwork.   Even if i am going Ireland to the continent i have to do this, even the % in oils changes from UK to US etc

The United States has apparently made an offer to Russia for the release of Griner. The way that ESPN reported on it made it sound like a deadline deal. What could we possibly offer in return? Basketballs?

Nines years sentence. That's a long time for less that 2 grams of some hash oil.  You better hurry and sent this up Skidmar.

They finally proved it was actual THC, but the whole arrest and booking was sketch af.

Fun fact, the olympian is from Texas. She's a local hero here. 

Brittney Griner has been transferred to a Russian penal colony. Her attorneys said they do not know where she is headed. Since being detained on drug charges in February, Griner has spent her time in a Moscow jail. Russian penal colonies are known for having even worse conditions than the jails,  attorneys said her family may not know her exact location for weeks.

i think had she thought about her actions and not carried drugs into a foreign country (especially one we are at differences with currently) maybe she wouldn't be in this predicament and she should be punished how that particular country see's fit.
