Vegas to Philly Started by: KennyRusso on Feb 05, '23 21:45

It was a cloudy day on the road. Kenny was in his car accompanied by James Baxter escorting the truck that was supposed to get his cash in Philly and transport it back to Vegas. They discussed the best course of action was to hollow a few pieces of furniture to stash the money, just a precaution in case Kenny's route is not trustworthy as it was back in the day. Of course Kenny made his calls, contacted old friends and paid the right officers to ensure that they wouldn't be stopped, but it's better to be safe than sorry. The back of the truck was filled with hollow chairs, ottomans and couches. It was being driven by one of Kenny's drivers from back in the day who was very familiar with the route.

Kenny and James were taking turns on the wheel, with Kenny with a map showing the route, shortcuts and how to avoid patrols that weren't in the payroll. James paying attention and asking questions clearly interested in learning. Since it was a long trip they sometimes stopped at hotels, slept on the back of the truck at night or took turns at the wheel.

In said cloudy day, it was maybe five in the afternoon. The road they were in was the main road to Philly but they needn't worry about patrols since Kenny paid the officer in charge in the city they were passing through. James decided to take a nap on the backseat since he'd been awake studying the map for the last few hours and driving before that.

"Go ahead, I'll let you know if something happens."

James was fast asleep while Kenny lit a cigarette and put his arm outside his window, feeling the wind against his hand. He kept a safe distance from the truck and never took his eyes of it. After a few minutes the truck stopped by the side of the road, Kenny did the same and walked to see what was up.

"Tank's getting empty. We should refuel." The driver said, Kenny nodded and asked if he knew the nearest gas station and he said the was one but off the route a few minutes northwest. Kenny told him to go ahead and went back to his car to follow him.

They arrived at the gas station and the truck's driver went for a refuel. James was still asleep and Kenny decided not to wake him up. He left the car and went to the convenience store to buy some coffee and some snacks for the road since they probably would be in Philly at the end of the night so he decided they should push through without rest.

Entering the store, Kenny browsed all the sugary goods to help keep him awake and energized. Also a few nutritive things for James once he wakes up. As he was getting ready to check out, he heard a loud gunshot coming from outside.

Bang!

Doing what I did, I had grown accustomed to gunshots but this one however, seemed rather close. Instinctively, I wrapped my handle tightly around the handle of my 1911, keeping my head down below the window.

It was difficult gauging where the shots were coming from inside of the truck’s cab. I clambered over the driver’s seat awkwardly, half expecting to be shot as soon as I swung the door open.

No bullet yet. That was a good thing.

I stayed low, hugging the asphalt. I could see the driver’s legs underneath the truck, motionless, a small pool off blood forming beneath him.

Well, that’s not good.

Another shot rang out, this one closer than before, the concrete kicking up as another bullet ricocheted with a twang.

Something along the lines got mixed up, someone figured out about the shipment.

I tried to look around the tires but I couldn’t see anything. I could only hear the approaching shots. It didn’t really sound like there was any aim to the shots, it felt more like covering fire.

Which meant that they aren’t alone and that someone was going to make a move on the truck.

As soon as he hears the shot he drops everything he intended to buy and quickly draws his S&W Model 3 revolver from his holster and with a swift movement he checks the bullets and the chamber was full. Kenny quickly jumps for cover behind a shelf near the door and tries to see if he can find where the shots came from. From his point of view, he could see his car where he noted that the door was open. That's good, he wasn't alone, James probably headed for cover.

He also could see his driver, shot dead. A man was taking cover on the front of the truck, head looking towards where James was. He was shooting wildly, probably trying to draw attention. Kenny also saw on the other side of the road a few more armed guys walking up in a hurry towards the truck. Kenny counted three plus the one that killed the driver.

Kenny mind raced as he thought "who could have betrayed me?", it was time for a new route to be made, this one has been used for years already and probably was known to a lot of lowlifes who think they can score big by raiding one. A person who pays attention would have figured it out. Maybe it was naive of Kenny to think he could still use this. But anyway, the thugs were going directly for the truck and another one on the direction of James.

More shots were heard, this time from the road. Kenny couldn't stay still and let them surround James. If he was killed, it'd be Kenny's fault. He took a deep breath and slowly made his way to the store clerk.

"Back door?!" Kenny asked him. The man pointed towards a door. Kenny swiftly made his way and exited the place.

He went around the corner with his revolver drawn and ready to fire. These thugs had no idea in what they were getting themselves into. Kenny's been fighting a war in Sicily against the Clemente family for the last two years, his shooting skills are more sharp then ever. And JamesBaxter is not a chump either. That's why Kenny's mind was set at ease, if they were tipped by someone Kenny trusts they'd know who they were stealing from and would've brought a bigger crew.

The moment Kenny lays his eyes on the man who killed his driver he aims his weapon and rushes him, getting into medium range. He screams, and shoots wildly to get the attention onto him and away from James. A bullet hits the thug's brain and he falls over, dead.

With the scream and gunshots, the rest of the bandits started making their way towards Kenny. He quickly reloaded his revolver and took cover near the back of the truck. Now it was up to James to sneak up and make sure he and Kenny got home tonight.

KennyRusso’s shots pulled them away from the truck for a moment but that brought its own set of issues. Kenny was now out manned and out gunned as they tried to maneuver their way around him, trying to catch him in the crossfire. If it dragged on any longer and they managed to get into position, we would both be screwed.

I crawled underneath the truck slowly. Timing had to be perfect on this one or it might as well all be over. A waited for a beat until I saw the pair of legs swing into view. I fired a single shot, catching the attacker in the calf, sending him crashing down to the ground with a yelp of pain, his gun clattering away as he fell. I squeezed the trigger again, this bullet catching center mass as he slumped down.

Quickly pulling myself from beneath the truck, I met KennyRusso behind our transport. “Hell of a way to start the morning, huh Kenny?” I checked the slide out of habit as the gun fire settled down. They were still around somewhere, most likely trying to get a better angle on us. “Two and two seems like good odds, Kenny. You go left and I’ll go right?”

"You got it." Kenny quickly dashed to the left side of the truck with his aim trained where the head of someone should be. Nobody was there. Kenny quickly looked around and then quickly got down on his knees to check for feet on the other side of the truck but nothing. They had vanished.

"You've got eyes on them?" Kenny asked to James who just shrugged. He kept looking around but no luck. Suddenly the truck engine fires and starts roaring. He quickly shot his eyes towards the cabin and dashed to it, the truck slowly taking off. There was no money now and the cargo was shit, but without it, it would be a pain in the ass to do what James wanted to do.

Kenny ran and jumped on the stairs beneath the door of the truck and held on the door handle. The truck was picking up speed and Kenny could see James making his way towards the car to help him. A few bullets were shot from inside the truck, shattering the window and nearly deafening Kenny. He quickly peeked inside the truck and there was just one man. Kenny quickly gestured his index finger to James to let him know that there was just one in the truck.

The thug kept speeding but a turn was coming, Kenny took advantage that he needed to steer the wheel and opened the truck door and grabbed the man, throwing him from the seat and onto the streets. He quickly jumped inside and stepped on the brakes, bringing the truck to a stop.

He left the truck and the thug was on the floor in pain with a broken arm. This arm with a Durden family tattoo. Probably just a gangster trying to make a quick cash. Kenny already knew why the ambushed happened so he quickly aimed his revolver and took a shot at the Durden, killing him.

I took off for the car as the truck’s wheels spun and smoked before taking off. I caught KennyRusso’s signal as I turned to steady my shot, aiming for the truck’s tires.

Before I could pull the trigger though, a shot rang across me, just missing. Instinctively, I dove back, putting the car between me and the attacker but also unfortunately, placing me on the passenger side.

Dropping the empty clip from my colt, I slid the full on in, checking the slide quickly as I peered underneath my ride. It was a tough angle and I wasn’t able to see anything. Drawing a deep breath to calm the nerves a bit, I slipped towards the back of the vehicle, keeping myself low enough to stay under cover.

Truthfully, I didn’t have time for this. KennyRusso must have had his hands full and the truck was only getting further away the longer that this took. I certainly wasn’t going to just sit here and wait to catch a bullet either.

It was a tough spot. I didn’t exactly have the element of surprise here and with the exception of my ride here, there wasn’t any other cover.

Eh, screw it.

I waited until I heard the reload, rushing around the edge of the ride. I managed to catch the attacker off guard, his eyes going wide as he struggled to reload his gun.

Squeezing off two shots as I ran forward, the first barely missing before the second sent him falling backwards, his weapon skittering out of his hand as he fell. I took another step forward before turning on a dime. He wasn’t a threat anymore, even if I only winged him. I had to get back to the truck.

Jumping into the driver’s seat, I coaxed the engine to life before shifting it into gear and jamming my foot on the gas. There was a lot riding in catching that truck.

After Kenny killed the Durden, he stopped to catch his breath. Slowly walking towards the dead man to search him for anything. He had nothing, only bullets for his pistol. Kenny kicked him for good measure and started to briskly walk towards the gas station to see if he could help James. He met with his car, speeding towards him halfway. He pointed his gun but did not fire, he squinted his eyes and saw James on the driver's seat, looking on edge but unharmed. Kenny let out sigh of relief.

"I am sorry, I don't know if this was planned or we are just unlucky but it wasn't supposed to happen." Kenny said. James just told him not to worry that these things happen. They made their way to the truck who was a little out of the road and they decided to push through the night to make it to Philly today. Kenny would drive the truck and James would take the car.

A few hours passed and they arrived at Philly near the warehouse where Kenny used to store his booze. James, satisfied with the route, aside the recent encounter thanked Kenny and told him to expect a visit in Vegas within the next month where he would get his share.

Since they were in Philly, the next day James fulfilled his promise and had Kenny meet all the influential people, politicians and mafioso in the city, making contacts and possibly securing a new route, a little bit more safe.
