It's 4:30 A.M. Do you know where your head's at? Shepard's head was wandering, as was his body, roaming the street in solemnity. His stride was slow and deliberate, the weight of the bags beneath his eyes encumbering him greatly. His face was unshaven, his hair unkempt. And he was tired. So tired. He could not sleep. For hours on end, he would turn about, searching for slumber that eluded him for days at a time. By the time his head finally came to rest comfortably on the pillow, the dreams would come, fast and frightening, but never memorable. His eyes would open to the blank ceiling above, and his mind would race, struggling to remember what he had just seen. But all he could see now were the shadows dancing through the window, trees silhouetted by the clouds and moon and Shepard's own tortured imagination. The dreams were simply gone upon his awakening. Eventually, his mind fabricated "The Dream Eater", a creature that would come each night, slip under the crack of his door, and devour his dreams just before his eyes opened again. He talked to it, cursed it, joked with it, anything to pass the time he spent so wide awake. He would go on walks with it, conversing in circles while strolling down main street. Sometimes, he wondered if it listened to a word he said, or if it was only humoring him, smirking and taking pleasure in the humiliation it wrought upon him. Still... It was company enough. "It's late..." Shepard's comment was met with silence, as usual. "I think I'm going to head back home. You should do the same. We could both use some sleep..." Shepard stopped on the corner of 71st and 3rd, as he always did. It was routine. They would stop at the same spot at the same time each night, and head their separate ways. Shepard looked up from his feet, staring at the darkened buildings surrounding the area, where people slept, and slept well. His eyes fell to the cement again, and he inquired to the Dream Eater again. "Are there others here, awake? Do they wander like me? Do they talk with others like you? Your friends?" Once again, a moment passed, and he was met only with a quiet breeze. A sigh escaped his lips, and he bid the creature goodnight, turning around and heading back the way he came. Sometimes he wished he would receive a reply, but never really expected one. Still, it would've been nice to have something to relate to. He liked to think that the Dream Eater didn't have friends, that their relationship was a symbiotic one. Maybe neither of them could sleep, and the Dream Eater needed someone to cling to just as much as Shepard did. Perhaps they had been trapped in dreams of one another. But that wasn't possible, was it? The Dream Eater cannot be real. As Shepard continued on in the dim twilight, he allowed his head to slump, his eyelids drooping as his mind wandered to thoughts of the sleep he had been dreaming about for so long. |
