It's a warm summer evening in 1940, and you're sitting in your living room with your friend John. The radio is on, and the sound of Benny Goodman's jazz music fills the air. But your thoughts are far away from music and relaxation, as the news reports coming through the radio are filled with talk of war. You and John had both been drafted into the army earlier that year, and had been sent to basic training in a nearby town. But now, with the war in Europe raging, it seems like only a matter of time before you'll be shipped overseas to fight. "Did you hear about what's happening in France?" John asks, breaking the uneasy silence that has settled over the room. "Yeah," you reply, feeling a knot form in your stomach. "Looks like things are getting worse every day." John nods, his expression serious. "I just hope we don't get sent over there," he says. "I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of fight." You understand his fears, but you can't help but feel a sense of duty and honor that comes with serving your country. "We'll be okay," you say, trying to sound confident. "We'll just have to keep training hard and be ready for whatever comes our way." As you speak, the radio suddenly crackles to life with an urgent announcement. "This is a special bulletin from the War Department," a voice says, sounding grave. "The President has just announced that the United States is now at war with Germany." Your heart sinks at the news, and you turn to John, who looks just as shocked as you feel. "Looks like we're in for it now," he says. You nod, feeling a sense of apprehension but also a fierce determination to do your part in the fight for freedom. "We'll make it through," you say, putting a hand on his shoulder. "We'll make it through together." |
