Building the Scratch Started by: The_Khan_of_Tartary on Apr 23, '08 20:10
The Khan walked down the alleyway, his new mate Billy splashing his feet in the puddles, just a stride behind him. He'd picked up Billy in a bar down the street. The Khan was new in town, just jumped ship across the pond. He liked it here already. Americans were more gullible. Easier marks. He swaggered into a nice little place to grab himself a drink, before he thought up a new con. He'd spotted Billy easily, across the bar, taking small sips, trying to look hidden. He'd walked over, eying him closely all the way. He'd make a good partner, at least temporarily. The Khan's eye was good for sizing up just what a man was worth, and more importantly, how long he'd be worth it. He needed somebody to help him the new con he'd just thought up. He sat down next to Billy, and started to talk in his British tongue, with a bit of Cockney in him;

"What's ya name boy? You look bored to death in 'ere. Tell you what, you tell me a little about y'self, I'll buy you another drink, and then well talk about making a little scratch together, eh?"

Billy replied with a startled start;

"Who are you, and why do you need me?"

The Khan called up to the bartender "Ay, another one for my friend here. What's ya name, eh?"

"Billy"

"Well Billy, they call me The Khan, and I'd like you to help me with a little idea I've got thought up, and there's even a little green in it for ya if you give a helping hand...?"

Billy's eyes lit up at the prospect of cash, just like The Khan new they would. He started to try and play it cool, but not well, the Khan saw right through it.

"Well, I might be interested... but... I need to know who I'm working with. What's your name, and why do they call you the Khan?"

Billy got his second drink.

"My name's The Khan, that's what you can call me, and that's who I am. They call me that because of a little play on words. Khan-con, ya see. I'm the best con man other side of the ocean, and the Khan was the biggest, baddest, nastiest bastard Mongol in the horde. So... I'm The Khan. Still interested?"

He already knew the answer, but the little one needed to feel in control, or he wouldn't bite.

"Maybe... What have you got in mind?"

"Well, let me start by saying thank god for Americans and their baseball..."

20 minutes later the water droplets of alley-puddles bounced off the back of Khan's legs.

"Eh, Billy boy, watch it."

"Sorry."

They slowly make their way toward the stadium, cardboard posters and buckets in hand. They set up a sign just outside. "Car Wash, $5" stares vehemently at every car that comes towards the stadium. Eventually they get a taker, as one fan pulls up, still incredibly early for the game.

"Be careful, she better be beautiful when I get back." An obese monstrosity of a man slunk his way out of the car, and after handing The Khan a fiver, waddled off toward the stadium.

The Khan watched as he slowly slid his way inside, and quickly ripped down the car wash sign when he was gone.

"a'right, lets get washin."

The two of them slowly soaped down the car, taking care to make it spotless. When they were done, it looked brand new. The Khan walked over and put a large sign in front of the car, a new slogan staring at the passers by. "Win a new CAR! Raffle tickets $10!"

"I don't get it Khan, why are we goin through all this extra trouble? We got a car, let's just sell it."

"Hmmm, let me tell you what's wrong with that idea, Billy. One: Captain triple chin would report his car stolen, and we'd have police after us. Two: I'm new in town, and I'm doubting that you know anybody who's gonna take a stolen car off our hands instantly, which means we're gonna be hanging on to a stolen car while the Bobbies...Cops... are after us. Look around you, we're surrounded by hundreds, thousands of people coming to see the game, and they're all going to buy tickets to try and win a new car. Who wouldn't? At the end of the day, fatty gets his car back, and everybody who bought a ticket goes home knowing they lost. The cops never hear, and we've got nothing but green! It's a great way to build a little scratch to start off with."

An hour later and they were each $500 dollars richer. With the game starting, it looked like no-one else was coming, and The Khan started to take down his sign, after splitting up the money with Billy. Just as he started to walk away, a rough throaty voice smacked him from behind. "Hey, where are you going?" The Khan spun around, ready to start giving a line, and playing off whoever was there, when a beat cop, in full uniform, stared back at him. Billy froze, and seemed to be shaking a little. The Khan hoped Billy could keep his cool, or this would end poorly.

"Just going to grab a little lunch, officer, why?"

"Well, wouldn't you want to announce the winner of this 'new' car?"

Damn, he'd seen the sign. The tone of his voice worried The Khan, it made it seem like he knew.

"Just after lunch, officer, we wanted to grab a bite to eat before we announced, besides I don't think now would be a good time, what with the folks all involved in baseball. We were thinking the 7th inning stretch would be the perfect time. What to you thing, sir?"

Billy looked like he was going to pass out. There was no color left in his face. The cop was looking a little too closely at the car for The Khan's comfort. Like he knew.

"y'know, for being a new car, there's an awful lot of dirt on the wheels."

'Damn it Billy.' Thought the Khan. It had been his job to clean the wheels. The devil was always in the details. Next time he'd work alone. They were burned, and they both knew it. The Khan thought he could still play it off, and was going to feed the cop a line about getting them dirty driving to the stadium, but Billy cut and run.

'Damn it Billy.' The Khan took off after him, deciding that he would definitely work alone next time. The cop took a minute realizing what had just happened, then took off after them. The Khan passed Billy, and rounded an Alley quickly, knowing he needed to hide, not run. Billy rounded the same corner to find that Khan had made himself disappear.

"Khan!! Khan!"

Billy looked around frantically. The cop rounded the corner, and Billy realized he was on his own. He took off, planning a way to escape as the cop ran a few paces behind. He made it a few feet before he fell, his body splashing into a puddle, that slowly began to turn red, as the hole in his back dripped it's sanguine goo.

"Teach you to mess around in this town." The cop said as he walked up towards Billy's body, watching him face down in the puddle. He'd already stopped breathing. The cop looked up.

"Now... where's your friend?"

His face exploded, his nose flying off down the alley, his body collapsed, and he fell face first, forming a twin next to Billy.

"Right here." The Khan lowered the smoking barrel of his gun. 'It's too bad,' he thought, 'the kid had potential.' He emptied both their pockets, and dragged the bodies into a dumpster. He walked out the other end of the ally, whistling to himself, a thousand dollars richer. One less cop to deal with too. He walked out onto the street, thinking to himself: 'I gotta find me one of them mafia families, get m'self some real work.'

The_Khan_of_Tartary still needs a family, let me know if you're interested.
