Deviant walks briskly from the HQ and takes up position on speaker's corner. A slight hush falls over the crowd, the silence punctuated only by the sound of j0ngott1 banging somebody's mother in a nearby bush. What does it take to own a city? Or more accurately, what should it take? I pondered this idly while kicking KingofWheelbarrows around the HQ the other day - what better place, I mused, to have a debate about this topic than our bustling Street? To be honest, I had a lovely family-tree type thing prepared, showing who had authed who into which city in recent times, but I feel it was too confusing and too controversial in the CP coffeeshop ("That was my auth you cunt. Mine!!") to share with others. Instead, I'll just make some grand and empty rhetorical flourishes, focusing on vague generalisations and wide sweeping statements rather than cold hard facts. As usual, then. Currently in our Six Cities, we have a mix of power variants. There seems to be no hard and fast rule as to when you are deemed to have 'taken control' of a city. In this context, the consequence of 'taking control' seems to be acquiring an ability to auth at will into the city, and block anyone else from setting up there. In some cases, cities were warred for and taken in that way (e.g. when PrinceofCheese overthrew Witchyx's reign in Los Angeles). However, in that particular case, Cab_Tufting then made the next two auths into that city. In other cases, when a leader was authed into a city and his auth-er then died, it seems to be the case that by default, the remaining auth in the city took control of it (e.g. PrinceofCheese in NY). Finally, some cities seem to have such a murky past that the control there seems more diluted and spread between all the leaders than others have done in the past. So then, I arrive at the crux of my point. It took a while, I'll admit, and I'm not quite sure if I've been clear, but here goes nothing. What does it take for power to accrue to a leader in this way? Do you achieve a stronger grip if you spill blood for a city and claim it like that? Can power by default due to the unrelated deaths of others ever be real power? Or does simple longevity and survival in a city mean that some power over its future is automatically vested in you? What should be a legitimate way to claim power over a city? I'll step back now so as not to be swamped by the massive rush and onslaught of people offering their opinions. Yes. |

Lovely, as an outspoken member of our community..I think I'll take a stab at this. It comes down to who wants it more along with who can actually back it up. Let me explain. CL Joe Blow is "auth'd" in ...lets say Baltimore (a fictitious city) CL Bubba Clide is also "auth'd" in Baltimore. now Joe has 17 members in his family, and he is feeling super cool, thinking."Hey I am my own CL I work for no one" Heres Bubba with his family of 50 thinkin "Who the fuck does this guy think he is? making these street announcements about whats happening in Baltimore" Mean while, Joe knows Bubba is gonna get angry but in Joes mind bubba is a shitty leader and doesn't do anything but collect tribute from his Earners. What Joe doesn't understand is that Bubba, although maybe not the best leader, has a hitsquad like the Ganelon of old. Bubba doesn't like Joe taking over making him look bad, and Joe doesn't like bubba sitting around doing nothing...War breaks out... look folks, this isn't politics...bottom line is deserve it or not, if you can't back it up ot GET back up. Bubba will dispose of you quickly. Joe, you need to get with some other families for some help....but be careful who you talk to, talk to the wrong guy and Bubba takes you down even sooner. ~cb |

Deviant thank you first of all for an interesting and appropriate speech instead of some of the mindless crap we get around here. Now as for your point i think its brings us back to the differences between leaders and captains, now lets say for example a leader had authed a captain underneath him. this does not mean he is ready to be a leader, and it does not mean he is wanted to be a leader by the person that authed him. As far as I am concerned a captain does not need any street presence. does not need to make any decisions and is not as important as the leaders. recently I think we have seen some of the captains get above there station and think they are a leader themselves, When in fact they are there to help the leader make the family stronger. Now say the family head is killed, does that automatically mean the captian should be authed? in my mind no. Just because they are doing a job does not mean they are ready to step up and lead I would rather see someone with the right attributes get authed for a city of there own than a captain just because they are there at the time. of course we will never know how the captain will do unless they get their chance. For example J0nGott1 is currently showing great potential as a leader, is he the exception or the rule? I guess we will have to wait and see. just a few thoughts from the doctor. let me know what you think? |

What does it take to own a city? To me that question really breaks down into another question: what does it take to be a truly great leader/mafioso? Before I really get started, let me qualify my argument. To truly "own" a city may mean something different to me than to most people. I think that being the most powerful crewleader militarily in a city simply means they have control. I do not necessarily equate control with ownership. To own a city takes more than simply being the most powerful militarily, or most vocal leader who resides there(though these are important too). A crewleader must genuinely have pride in their city and a desire to implement change in it. To own a city I feel a leader must truly transform it. They have to mold it into their own image. They must implement new rules and features for their city, A crew leader must make their city vastly different and more desirable than the other options. The business distict should be blossoming. To truly own a city a leader should leave a lasting legacy in their hometown. They should be the most vocal, the stongest, and the most involved member of their particular comunity. They should be so inexticably linked to their city that the two become synonymous. The city should, in effect, become their identity, and vice-versa. |

| I bought a city in New Mexico a few years back. I considered it an investment, albeit a bad one. What do I do with a place with a name like "Truth or Consequences"? | |

You know .. blood in and blood out has always been the term. You spill blood to gain power - people respect that You work your way to the top - people respect that You kiss ass your way into auth - people remember that. I have always respected those that had the balls and dedication to risk everything and take what they wanted and not look back. It takes a lot of work and logestics to take control of a city through violence because of the way out world is set up. News in our world travels fast, and leaders from other cities can quickly squash a takeover if they do not approve - so you must use your allies and your weapons to take over with violence. |
