Deviant begins to walk back to the HQ after finishing his previous speech. Before reaching the door, he looks back over his shoulder at the quiet street. Pausing momentarily, he clears his throat to speak again. Few of us make the effort we should to speak on the Street as often as possible - and I include myself in that. Perhaps we are distracted by the coffee shops, perhaps by posters on other avenues - but the fact remains that the Street should be our pride and joy and a hub of activity. The silence we have become accustomed to here cannot go unnoticed by new arrivals and is undoubtedly a contributory factor when many of them decide not to stay. I feel that as a community it is our responsibility to encourage and support good street speaking (or even not so good street speaking - just street speaking with some effort involved, really.) Today, I'm establishing a fund for rewarding people who make an effort to speak on our streets. Every week, without fail, the person who is deemed by the leader's coffee shop to have made the most effort on the street with the best thread will win the contents of that fund. Some smaller awards may also be made to those who are also highly commended. How much is the prize? It is as big as this community wants it to be. Its size will be related in direct proportion to how much we all really care about making this place grow and bring it back to life. I'm asking everyone who cares about this world to set up a sort of standing order - a weekly donation to me, made on a Sunday, which will be kept and used to reward people for their activities on a weekly basis. Each Sunday, I will come to the street and announce the winner, together with a list of people who supported the fund that week and its total value in order to ensure transparency, i.e. that I'm not just ripping you all off. I personally pledge one million dollars on a weekly basis to this fund to get the ball rolling. We all hark back to the days where you could hardly make your way down the street without bumping into hundreds of Mafiosi. Let's see how much we really want to go back to these days and how much we just want something to moan about. Ideally, this world should generate activity and discussion naturally, without needing monetary incentive. But until we get back to those days, I feel a gentle kick may be just the thing we need. |

Deviant, I think this is a great idea. It seems that with all the people walking these streets, there should be many great orators or thought-provokers. I cannot match your donation capabilities, but accept my small donation, please as I'd like to see more effort put into the streets. Respectfully, TRN |

The fund has already grown to 1.6 million. Just to note - if you are sending a donation, please mobmail me at the same time telling me that is what it is intended for. I'm so bloody handsome that random strangers give me money for no reason all the time so I may get confused. |

Sounds like a great idea, I do have one question for you sir. I noticed that you made an indication that you would reward those that come to the streets and begin speeches. Is that the only people that would be eligible for this contest? I mean after all there are a few speakers that are active in many discussions but don't necessarily begin the debates them self. I'll donate what I can to this, although I am sure you understand that my family comes first. anything else I can muster up will help in this effort. cb sits back and waits for his reply |

Charlie, while I'd imagine the main prize may go to someone who has begun an original speech themselves, there is certainly room for rewarding those who participate in the speeches and discussions of others. How big those rewards are, of course, depends on you guys :) |

I hate this idea, I really do. for all i want the streets to be active i hope this does not make everyone speak all the time when its not needed just to try and win this contest. I want to see the streets as busy as possible but I want people to speak because they have things to say not because there is a paycheck at the end of it. I wish you luck in your venture and hope that the streets are all the better at the end of it. |

I agree with the last speaker that the situation he speaks of wouldn't be too desirable - however, the current situation is no better than that and probably far worse. A busy street is always better than one only filled with tumbleweeds and memories. This is not intended to be a permanent measure, but rather a jump start. |

| TheLoveDoctor, the way to fix that is to NOT reward the useless ramblings of those who are only attempting to win the contest. Also, I would suspect their leader would not take kindly to seeing someone who works for them talking nonsense in the street, as that would reflect poorly on them. | |
