Spent shook his head as another gangster fell dead in the street. He could not see the shooter... he could only hear the zinging of bullets and smell the distance gunpowder. The car he hid behind was nice and solid just the way he liked it and until the civilians started poking around the body he refused to stand up. He brushed the dirt from his suit as he scanned the crowd. You could never be too careful when you were in the line of work that pays both the living and the dead... He had not been in Chicago all that long but he knew one thing for sure the dead tend to multiply if you stick around too long. He located his hat... popped it back into shape and headed down the ally he had come from. The stench of urine and beer was thick in the air. Bums littered its sides like maggots crawling on... dead things... groaning for their next fix. These people he could understand. They were driven by desperation and need and he always had what they were looking for. Peddling the street was second nature. Ducking behind cars was soon becoming his next expertise... already 27 dead today... and the day was only half over. He stopped quickly flattened himself against the wall and watched as another gangster stumbled to the cobbles... blood gushing from a face wound. The man gurgled a few words as his life ran into the spew of god knows what. Spent stayed frozen not moving an inch... the man's aslant crouched down and ruffled through the dead mans pockets. He growled when the wallet came out empty... frustrated the assailant stood - spit - and ran off. A smile broadened on Spent's face as he fingered through the assailants' wallet. The fool was carrying around enough cash to front his next endeavor. He glanced in both directions as he stepped over the body and headed back to his quarter... it never hurt to let others do the dirty work. |
