Kuklinski walked out of the shop carrying some food for his pet. As he walked to his car, a small man came gliding out of the shop on roller skates. He followed Kuklinski and sped round in front of him. Kuklinski, recognising the little person, was momentarily stunned – then he noticed the smile on the little person’s face. The little person handed Kuklinski his change – Kuklinski had left it behind.
Kuklinski then got into his car. Kuklinski adjusted his rear mirror, making the back window appear like a picture frame. He then adjusted his side mirrors, signalled, observed and manoeuvred. He waited for the bite to kick in and drove off into first gear. Almost immediately, he changed gear to second. Approaching thirty miles per hour, Kuklinski changed into third year and stayed like that for a while.
Kuklinski wasn’t going far, just around the corner to a Street where he had stood on many occasions. But this occasion would be slightly different.
Kuklinski approached the Streets and began to speak...
My friend, let me tell you what I just did. I walked out of the shop carrying some food for my pet. As I walked to my car, a small man came gliding out of the shop on roller skates. He followed and sped round in front of me. I, recognising the little person, was momentarily stunned – then I noticed the smile on the little person’s face. The little person handed me my change – I had left it behind.
I then got into my car. I adjusted my rear mirror, making the back window appear like a picture frame. I then adjusted my side mirrors, signalled, observed and manoeuvred. I waited for the bite to kick in and drove off into first gear. Almost immediately, I changed gear to second. Approaching thirty miles per hour, I changed into third year and stayed like that for a while.
On the face of it, friend, this may seem like a mundane story about a small person who I think about a lot and then a seemingly inane account of a driving a short distance. But think about the metaphors contained therein.
Friends, the little man bringing me my change – he was friendly. Bygones are forgotten. Those who are due something are getting it – in the best possible way.
Yes, this journey is uneventful. But that doesn’t mean that previous journeys were like this – or that future ones will be.
My friends, I’m glad you’re all here. And I’ve been heartened by the notes of support. But I won’t be around here as much. I’m not retiring; I’m just pursuing other projects. You will hear from me – but not as much. The energy needed to keep up this standard of creativity is immense. And I am not the young man I once was.
It’s been emotional.
What do you make of these metaphors, my friends? |

I think they were so deep and well thought out, it's probably what killed you. If I had been there and warned you....told you to do a pedestrian simile or recite a limerick or something, maybe, maybe, you'd still be alive. I'll carry that guilt to my grave.
And in this case "my grave" is a metaphor for "3 minutes". |
